Current set up:
Win7 Ultimate x64
Q6600 Stock(has been up to 3.6ghz on air)
DFI Blood Iron P35 Mobo
1x 2GB DDR2 667mhz Kingston Cas5
2x 1GB DDR2 667mhz Kingston Cas5

What should I be aiming for?
I know I'm passing up the benefit of Dual Channel with my current setup but I needed the 4GB and the 2x 1GB were practically free from a friend.

Is there much of a difference between say two 4GB sticks and four 2GB sticks?

Assuming that I keep the 2GB 667mhz and add 3 more what would be the optimal set up?

FSB=333mz for 3.0ghz
RAM=667mhz for 1:1 dual channel ratio

I doubt my ram would push to 800mhz to reach 3.6ghz at 1:1 and I don't think there would be much benefit having 3.6ghz at a non 1:1 ratio.
Maybe I should just shell out for a set of DDR2 800 either 2x 4GB or 4x 2GB

I've been out of the hardware loop for awhile and it shows lol.

I highly doubt that the extra 600Mhz OC is worth the extra $90 for a 2 x 2GB DDR2 800 RAM for a 1:1 ratio. In addition, there's no performance difference between 2 x 4GB and 4 x 2GB besides a slightly higher chance of a lower OC with 4 sticks of RAM.

So in other words, stick with your current setup. Dual channel only provides, at most, a 3-5% performance increase. Definitely not worth the extra $90. So there's pretty much no cost-effective upgrade in terms of RAM for you.

Actually, you can run all 4GB in dual-channel mode with the three sticks that you got now. This is because the P35 chipset's MCH supports a "Flex" mode as well as true dual-channel operation with an odd number of modules. Put in the two 1GB sticks in DIMM slots 1 and 2 and the 2GB stick in DIMM slot 3, and you'll have dual-channel with three sticks. Otherwise, the memory controller will default to the "Flex" memory mode where only half the RAM gets run in dual-channel and the other half in single-channel. The DFI BloodIron mobo's manual is incorrect about the "virtual single-channel mode" since the P35 chipset does not truly support virtual single-channel mode.
 
Thanks for the knowledge guys. I'll just save the money and put it towards a future build.
