I am considering getting a used q6600 off of Ebay. They go for around $50. The point is that he has taken to BF3. It plays pretty decent, but it dips down into the 20FPS at times.

Has anyone here played BF3 on a Q6600? Is the CPU sufficient to get the framerate up a little better than his E8400?

This E8400 that I have wouldn't overclock well at all. If I remember, 400 mhz was all. Q6600's were pretty decent overclockers weren't they?

If you were lucky you could get a G0 up to 3.4ghz+ on air IIRC, some to 3.6ghz. 3.0ghz was all but certain so yeah im sure it would be a decent upgrade from an E8400 in BF3 since it once of the few games that will use extra cores.

I'm pretty sure the E8400 will overclock better than the Q6600. The quad is older tech (larger nm) and runs hotter. Like nissan said, BF3 is one of the handful of games to utilize quad cores. That rig as a whole I wouldnt recommend to anyone looking to play BF3. But a quad core could lessen some strain from the game. I just wouldn't expect higher clocks. The game might feel a bit more fluid.

your best bet would be to go for a quad Q9 series chip like a Q9450 or better honestly. E8400 as example on average clocks to over 4ghz which would need a Q6600 at ~3.5 or better to match up with(due to increased IPC and higher FSB of the E8 series)

If you are limited on the E8400 then more then likely you will also be limited on clocking up a Q6600 just the same. BF3 needs the cores and the speed of those cores, 4 slow cores will be less strain to get fluid frames then 2 fast cores BUT the faster more efficient cores will help pull ahead.

Q660 average overclock was 3.4 max that most could hit was ~3.6 and that was pushing them really(for heat/voltages for extended periods) E8400/8500/8600 95% of the time could hit 4.2 or better, Q9450 and higher averages were around the same if you had good cooler to mitigate the extra voltage required and a decent board to let them do it, but generally Q9 was 3.8 or better Q8 4.2 or better.

I found a used 9450 for $89 bucks. That's a reasonable price for an upgrade considering the cost of a full rebuild of his PC.

I was reading through the customer reviews for that CPU and got a chuckle at the 2008 date of them. I can remember those CPU's hitting the streets like they were yesterday. I can't believe I let my friend talk me out of a q9450 and into a e8400 back then.

A Q6600 will be better for BF3 than an E8400. I did run BF3 on a Q6600 overclocked to 3.2GHz and the performance was not bad at all.

Honestly, sell what you have and pick up a i7 920 combo in the FS forums. You can buy a CPU, MOBO, RAM for $175-225. That would do a lot more for you than wasting $95 on such old hardware.

I agree. Heck, you can get a 2500k for around $125. Only down side is you'll need DDR3 with a newer platform

The e8400 was a little monster, especially overclocked, back then, and few games if any used more than 2 cores.

Most of the CO steppings would do up to ~3.6GHz and the EOs would do 4+GHz. I had a nice EO that would do 4.2GHz at relatively low voltage.

Money towards a better GPU would be a much better investment.

No, not really. I've run BF3 on a 650Ti and it runs it respectably. His CPU is without a doubt the limiting factor here.

Imo not here. Although slow, the GTX 650 Ti would most still be held back by a Q6xx or Q9xx.
Definitely go with the q9450, just had my q6600 at 3.2 for a bit with my 5870. It was "playable" but to be honest I wished I had saved up just a little more for a Q9450 or better.
Though if you really want a real jump in FPS, get a i7-920 or i7/i5 2500k. With BF4 only over a month away, I guarantee you'd double your fps in both games. Find a smoking deal and overclock. These games truly NEED a modern quad.

The 920 is tripple channel. Most the FS threads include 3x2gb kits. Most are $250-325 because they include a case, psu, optical, gt 260, etc.

Just pass on the case/psu/optical and gpu in order to score a deal.
