ok, so after being stuck with my p4 system, i finally thought it's time i upgrade. So the budget is around $1000 without the monitor, speaker, mouse, etc because i already have them.
i'm going to use this system for internet, mild gaming (mid setting in cs source is fine), and music ( should i get a sound card?).
One thing that i need is that this system is very quiet and fast. I don't want the system to distract my studies. And since i won't be using it very often stability and speed is very important to me. so i decided to go with the q6600.
I was thinking about 8600gt, how about it?

$1000 will get you a great machine. roughly
Q6600 - $270
8800GT - $240
Asus P5E - $230 (or) Maximus Formula -$260
DDR2 800 - $60+
500GB HDD - $100

that still give you around ~$100 to play with (soundcard, keyboard/mouse, etc.)
More if you dropped to from an X38 chipset to a P35 or 680i or went with a ATI 3850 or 3870

lots of headroom with that budget :)

the 8600GT IMO is a waste of money in many people's opinion. What resolution do you usually game at? Here's a list of a pretty nice build in my opinion.

of course you could go with a cheaper tower case but this one is quiet and built to keep everything cool and look pretty nice. based on what you wanted for cs:source and your budget the hd 3850 will be a nice video card for your system. if you plan on gaming more and detailed hungry look at the hd3870, 8800gt, 8800gts 512mb. if you run at large resolutions like 1680x1050 and up get the 512mb video card. the mobo is a nice mobo for ocing also and the thermalright cpu heatsink i suggested will help so much in air cooling ocing. just add a nice 120mm case fan on it and your set. remember to get thermal compound and such.

It's not easy staying under 1000 with a proper q6600 build.

I started with a budget of around 700-800 thinking I'd get a regular e-mail computer (maybe even a dell), and although the parts aren't here yet, I THINK (haven't looked at all the receipts) I'm at around 1200 or 1300 so far.

But then again, I've never been able to keep within my budget for anything, and it just ends up being motivation to work harder, make more, not drink as much, etc.

Got the gigabye p35ds3l, q6600, 8800gts, wd 500gigger, logitech kb/mouse, cooler master case with corsair hx520 ps, some on sale 4gb ocz ram, and samsung burner. That's it so far, excited about getting it together though, hopefully nothing's DOA.
 
crhscoog's build looks ok. Though, you need to answer his question about resolution.

What size monitor do you have? LCD/CRT?
What resolution and settings do you game at?
Do you plan on OC'ing? I ask this because Intel chips can OC pretty damn high and still be rock solid stable.

If you're gaming on a 19" monitor, the HD3850 will be fine. If you have a 20 or 22", you'll want at least the 8800GT 512MB. If you have a 24" LCD, go for the 8800GTS 512MB.

Another case alternative to the P182 would be the Cooler Master RC-690, typically found for around $40AR.

yeah this case is pretty neat too. up to 7 120/140mm case fans. comes with 3 fans already and you can add 4 more and also one 80mm case fan behind the mobo.

Imperfect to you but perfect to others. Not everyone needs or uses e-Sata external drives.

eSATA transfers data at 3Gb/s vs usb 2.0 at 480mb/s, that is still usb 3.0 comes out, suppose to do 5Gb/s. if you do a lot of backups, for now eSATA is the fastest way to do it.

But again, not everyone needs or uses e-SATA external drives. Many people are perfectly happy with USB 2.0 speeds. In addition, many people still have older system that don't have eSATA ports or even no SATA ports at all. So USB 2.0 will still be around for a quite a while.

Also, those are the theoretical speeds, not actual speeds. But yes, eSATA is faster than USB 2.0 but again, not everyone wants it. Firewire 800 is faster than USB 2.0 yet USB 2.0 is still more widespread than Firewire.

How big is the screen? WHat resolution do you typically play with? I am also building a rig (see sig) that is gonna be very similar. I'm a grad student studying for my MBA so I'm not trying to have this computer take over my life but also have a little fun with it. Right now I'm waiting to get a PSU, and also a better graphics card. My budget was basically just the cash/money I had on hand (which was very little with school loans). I'd take a look at how big your into music. I'm into music and have roughly 12,000 mp3's with a Logitech Z-2300 system set up. Sounds great and I'm planning on using on-board sound. After I graduate I plan to upgrade and get better speakers will I will obviously get a sound card.
