Push/pull Fan Config really makes a diff?

I see that alot of enthusiasts who are doing air cooling will set up their heatsink wish a fan configuration in push/pull (one fan pushing hair into the heatsink and on the other side another fan pulling the air). Now I can see how this could give you anywhere between 1.3x to 2x the CFM airflow... but does it really affect temperatures that much in the end?

I'm wondering if anyone has some numbers to say one way or the other. Is it something that will knock off 1c or more dramatic? I suppose it really depends on the heatsink and other variables.
 
I don't think you want any hair being pushed into a heatsink. Would make more a messy situation. :p

As for the fan set up, it's always good to have one fan on the heatsink pulling cooler air onto it & have another fan pulling the warmer air away from it. The faster the warm air is removed the better.
I have a tuniq tower & it's fan is pointed right at the rear exhaust fan so the warm air is removed quickly.

With my OCed Q6600 at 3.1GHz, my idle temps around 43c. The case temp is 84c but I think the probe is sitting too close to a card to be that high. That plus my wire management sucks.

Anyway, I'm also wondering whats the best way to orient the fans? Should both of them be the same CFM rating? I've seen some people put a higher CFM for push and a lower for pull. Any recommendations?

Also, if you Google "push-pull fan", this thread is #2. :D
 
with my x2 4200 and thermalright ultima 90, i'm running push pull and i did a lil experimenting when i set it up and found maybe 1C difference at idle and 2-4C difference at load but the big thing was how much faster it cooled off after load. i dont know if/ how much it would matter about the cfm difference between the 2 fans, i just used what i had around.

i have a silenx 120mm red led, as for their leds, they suck, their at the center and dont emit light outside of the center hub. it is pretty quiet tho and the airflow is good, as per what they claim i have no idea
