Purpose of a Raid array

Is the purpose of setting up a raid array using two identical hard drives to allow for the automatic backup of the primary drive onto the second drive?

If not, what is the purpose of setting up a raid arry using two identical hard drives?
 
Raid stands for Redundant array of independent disks. So your data is safer, since the array will back up your data as it is written.
 
Just one important piece of advice: RAID is NOT backup. It guarantees uptime when a hard drive fails but RAID does not protect against accidental deletion, corruption, or infection of the data. So you should still have an external backup of your important and critical data somewhere (DVD, External hard drive, NAS, file server, etc)
