According to C|Net, an updated Windows 7 release candidate has hit the torrent sites. Supposedly this “leaked” version is the very same version that Microsoft plans to release shortly as an official release candidate.

Microsoft has also reportedly given "build 7100" to key partners, although Microsoft has not commented on that. The software maker also briefly posted a blog indicating that the release candidate was coming in May, although that blog was later pulled from Microsoft's TechNet Web site.

I installed this build earlier today. Comming from the public beta, it feels much quicker and more "polished".

I'll wait the few more weeks for the final build to ensure I only get windows 7 and not windows 7 + virus

wonder how many people are going to do the "Windows Update" to make sure their copy of Win7 is up to date :D

Oh.. and that Ina Fried he/she freaks me out with it's looks!

Funny thing is it did have an update ready when first run. Was a driver update, but still!

There's no virus, it's clean, the CRC hashes match what Microsoft passed out on Tuesday to TAP participants, for both x86 and x64 versions. There are, of course, a bunch of different releases floating around now, but... it's legit at least in the sense that it's what will be "released" when Microsoft does the public release candidate distribution.

Anything special added to this one from Build 7077? Hard to get any release notes for leaked builds ;)

um build 7106 is out, which is something like 7077, but they say build 7076 may be the newer build in the end right now.

can i download it directly from ms? when will we be able to do that?

The fact that I see the type of chatter about W7 that I hadn't seen about Vista is a good indicator that this is going to be a real win for MS.

where can I find this CRC number

yea, whats the official ms md5?

ive only been able to find md5 of the aleady released builds on torrents..

Guys, what is a release candidate vs a full retail release?

Exactly what it sounds like, a RC is like the last beta, or the most polished version of the code they've managed after all the betas... Sort of like a last chance for OEMs, advanced users, and everyone else to mention any major issues; if none are found then they make it the official release.

wouldnt checking the MD5 hash eliminate the virus/trojan/malware risk altogether?

Joe hit it, i have downloaded alot of window versions over my years and never have they had a virus in them, ever, sure if you get the special super elite gamer edited downloads, who knows, but using crc and such, your usually fine doing it, as long as the legality issues dont bother you.

most viruses come in applications, cracks, keygens and even then most are false positives by your AV.

Or it could just be that our expectations are so low that a decent and functional OS suddenly seems pretty good. :p Windows 7 is definitely an improvement though, from what I've seen. Unfortunately, it just seems like what Vista should have been in the first place, and it's a bit puzzling how such a huge company can take so long to come out with an OS people want.

I can't wait for Windows 7 to come out so I can buy it. Running it now and love it. I'd buy Vista, but I can wait for 7.

The release candidate is just what the name says, a candidate of the software to be shipped (few bug fixes left), but there can be and often there are multiple release candidates so it isn't quite the last beta. There are always more bugs to find, but you reach a point where you have to get to smaller and smaller numbers of bugs that you will choose to fix since every bug you fix has a decent probability of introducing more bugs. Release candidates are a way to help spot issues that have popped up as a result of changes that happened during beta.

That very well could be true. Never underestimate the politics of low expectations. :D
