I've lost a borg and shut down 3 machines. heat is killing me... noise is killing me. The need for faster processors is killing me. It was damn near a hundred today. I ran the window AC unit AND the main cooler and it is still too damn hot in here.

I've fought this dragon for many many years and havent been impressed enough with the outcome with level of philanthropy I can afford.

-I've watched two fairly new DC'ers get modded. Moose I can understand as he is an icon but K13?
-I've watched this team go from a pack of close knit friends to a pile of point whores. The whole rubber duck was lost amongst too many.
-Where are my old friends? Strike, Cabletwin, Jedi, King, and the wolf's. Steve... where the hell are you?!

At what point do I stop pouring money into this ? I held a passion for this damn few could realize... now its a pile of computers with their lights off. I used to see this as an outlet for my "geekness" adn the ability to assemble hobbits into a network and have them work for the good of mankind instead of falling to key fobs.

I'm done. Good luck kind folk. I'm finished.

i'm sorry to hear that. i wasn't, by any stretch of the imagination, one of the "old crew" you speak of, and all i can offer is the generic "thanks for contributing, hope you come back soon" bullcrap.

good luck.

Sorry to see you go off in a huff. I suspect most of the "old crew" are to busy to post.

I am still around, mostly in the IRC channel as CT. Like a lot of the old guard, real life has kept me from participating as much as I want. I need to spend more time in the forums and do some more borging.

I think we can take this and do a lot of good for the team. King needs a lot of help gathering news and with guides for n00bies and some of us old guys who have lost touch. Instead of fighting amongst ourselves, we need to take that energy and use it against the real enemies... cancer, alzheimers, and other nasty diseases.

I have seen a lot of good ideas in the thread and hope that we can put some of them to work and pull the team back together. Signing off now and hoping to see more people in the IRC channel. www.enterthegame.com #hardfolding.

Jedi ?

KingN is here all the time - and posting 1000 time more than he used to. (well old post rate +1 times 100).

Wolf is still is crankin' the points.

Do us a favor - if you run a computer that's networked then run Folding. Even Timeless Tinkers are being put to good use. In fact about half the WU I get are now Tinkers :(

As far as being point whores - it's nothing like it was during the Genome Wars. Stanford has decided that they will award a few more points for units they need quickly, and these need more resources. The old p90 with 64mb of RAM does not cut it anymore.

I see you were running 7 processors in the last 50 days, 3 in the last 7. But your points for the last 7 weeks never rose above 3,074 per week.
Most of my homies are AMD, and they generate about 500 ppw per Ghz, my 1 p4 gets about 1,000 ppw per Ghz. (non-HT)
My p933's are getting a little slow for the new proteins.

What I'm getting at is if you could afford to consolidate thos 7 cpu's into 1 Dell (usually available for about $250 to $300) you would donate the same amount to science, and lose a lot of heat, noise, and space problems. Like weeding your garden :)

Take care, y'all come back now.

When it comes down to it... its not about the points.

If you took some time to talk with us around here then you might have seen that. Yes there are a few people who are all about the points, but they know that it is for a better cause.

Sadly, a "race" is something that helps to inspire more people to sign up.

But after loosing my grandpa to cancer in less then a month, and being there his final week.

Being the guy who had to close his eyes.

Seeing him waste away righ before my fucking eyes, one of the strongest people i knew...

Seeing all that go to something that might be able to be prevented through more research..

Yea, I may look like its about the points, but what I have been trying to do is get more people on the team to help find the cure.

I have never talked to you before, don't know your story... but in the end we all get tired of something. As for me.. as long as there is a way, even a small way like running a few computers... then I will do it in hopes no one else has to go through with it.

Its your choice. Best of luck to you in the future, and you always have a [H]ome here... and instead of bitching about the people who left.. if you come back try to take the time to know the people that are here... even if we are not old school.

Good luck Redshred. If it doesn't mean anything to you anymore then you shouldn't be folding. If you change your mind we will be here and welcome you back.

I will hate to see you go Red, when I first started to post here you were the only one from AZ that was here and posting. There are a fair number more now but I hate to see you go.
More than that though, I hate to see you go away upset about the project.

Things have changed here quite a bit. Good / bad I dont know but it is different.
You should be starting your own threads here to help inject a little of the old school that used to be. This would help to get the old feel of the forum back again.

As to the project, run just a single rig cut down on the annoyances that can come with this project. We dont need any more of those blinking skulls on the [H]ord's website.

I understand your irratation with the heat, im in the same frying pan. I run 3 boxes and 3 fans in this room to help deal with this. Always that constant hum running.

If you must go.....I'll miss ya!!!

Hey Red... sorry to hear your frustration. :(

My farm ain't what it used to be either. I'm currently down to 2 machines, a dual (2 Athlon MP's at 2 GHz and an Athlon 64 3200+ (2.2 GHz). The dollars it costs to run the A/C here in Texas mixed with the heat the CPU's generate and their electricity cost, causes a shutdown here when it gets hot. In extreme cases I cut back to a single machine.

One thing that is difficult is people come and go (mostly go) in these DC projects and the forums for that matter. Many of the old timers are still around and still folding (where did the [H]ands man go???) they just don't post that much anymore. If it wasn't for the 1,000's of people using EM 24/7 I would probably just run folding and not post much either. But, new people join, start using EM and ask questions. EM pretty much does everything but scrub toilets now. :D Not much for me to do anymore but answer questions, update protein info, keep up with what Stanford guys are doing on the project, etc. This is all good as my personal life is busier than ever and I have a lot less time to interact here in cyberspace.

Bottom line is the F@H project is still the best way to use a computer for some good, that hasn't changed. Try and keep at least one machine going if possible while remembering the good 'ol days... think of it as keeping a light in the window. ;)

Red, I don't know what to say....I echo the others, I don't want you to leave this way. :(

This team is not what it used to be. I have the same feelings....I LOVED the old days. I miss the old days. But that is what they are, and they have passed. The team has changed, and I think that if you take the time to get to know some of the newer members, you will find that we have a spirited, dedicated bunch here and they are willing to go the distance. Some are here for the points and that is fine, we have always accepted that. We need every single member to contribute, small or great, whatever the reason. That is what makes us a team. The [H]orde still has heart, it's just beating a little faster now. Young blood is what was needed to keep this team going. After relic's departure, the team got stagnant....new blood is what revitalized us!

Besides, since when have we shunned new members? I remember a time when a young punk named Atomicmoose came to this team and asked what this "folding" was all about...you guys welcomed me with open arms and now look at me!

This team has a duty to continue to grow and accept new members. It is the only way it will survive. But, we still need our roots, it is what makes us the [H]orde. Don't make us lose another part of this team's past...stick around and taste the NEW [H]orde. I think you'll find that you like it. :)

I hate to see you go. I understand the frustration aspect, not so much in folding as in other things. I remember having a friendly little contest back and forth a while back and it was fun. You're just about the only person I have done that with. The jockeying back and forth used the points as a measuring stick and kept things interesting.

I think there is more emphasis on points than there used to be but I do not think it is as bad as you make it out to be. There are times I am a points/stats whore but I do not allow that to interfere with the project itself. I make sure the rigs I run are stable and not messing up WUs. I have an XP2400+ that has been having trouble with Tinkers this week. I haven't had a chance before today to do anything about it. My guess is there is a problem with the Tinker core. I'm going to delete the cores and have the client download them again to make sure there is nothing wrong. There have been times I haven't even looked at points for a week or two at a time, yet I have still run my machines. I have no plans on turning them off anytime soon if I can help it.

I do not doubt that power and coolling are a problem where you are at. I would not blame you for turning off the majority of your machines. I'm hoping that I do not have to do that this summer. For now while my systems are at a friend's house and he tries to keep the temps below 70 anyway, it won't be a problem. The three machines I have here aren't going to affect his power bill much especially since one of them is down due to instability.

I just hope you do not give up on the project. You can give up on some of us including me and I will not give a damn, because that won't matter. Giving up on the project completely is a different matter.

I have noticed your absense as with many of the other "old-timers". I never really interacted with them in the forums and that includes going back to the old Genome days but it was definitely interesting to watch everything going on. There is a very different atmosphere here than there used to be, but it doesn't mean that it's bad. It would be nice to have you an many of the others that no longer post here much back, at least when you all can. There is a certain leadership and direction that is missing. I can't put my finger on exactly what that would be, but it is noticeable.

I would prefer if you stay and keep contributing what you can. I among others, do not want you to leave. Just give it a little time and see if you still feel the same. I will respect your opinion and your decision if you do decide to stop.

I don't really think there is anything left to be said, that hasn't already. Thanks for your contribution, good luck in your future endavours, and if you aren't going to fold for the team, at least fold for the greater good. That's what this is all about anyhow.

Hate to see you go, but I understand some of your concerns. I'm a guy who started Folding back in 2001 (? I think), with a measly XP 1900. The guys who were around then are definitely old timers, but I'm at the least, a middle-age timer, team-wise.

Things have definitely changed. Don't let the people who are points oriented get you down. It's a necessary thing, to get people to compete, and to have some way of measuring their contributions. You can keep an eye on the points, or you can compare how many WUs you have sent in...it's a necessary evil, for us to achieve good.

As for the heat, there's things you can do, if you haven't tried them yet. Heatwise, try to minimize the number of systems you have running; sell or donate the old and slow systems to fellow team members (and use the proceeds to buy new fast headless boxes), maybe go diskless or mapped network drive. Maybe even only run the systems at night, to help with the AC bill (half the production, but it's still better than none)?

Noisewise, that's harder. More efficient heatsinks, coupled with quieter fans? Find a way to put the systems in an out of the way place (noise-insulated closet with a ducted exhaust fan?.

Yes, alot of the old guard don't post alot, but most of them are still folding. I bet most of them fell victim to the 'ol raising a family and lack of time to browse the Net bug.

Your decision, hate to see you go, but it's up to you. Incidentally, if you are determined to go, how about selling your excess systems to the team? [:)]

It sucks to see anyone go and be upset but I got to say something about the nostalga aspect.

This isn't directed at anyone in particular but rather the whole idea of nostalga.

In real life I am probably one of the older set.....(I am a new folder on the team but have been folding anonymously for a while) I really noticed it after leaving the military and going back to school......and I to find myself longing for a time long ago. Then after a while I realized......no I don't really miss the old days they weren't that great.....it is just that nostalga...it isn't real. For instance recently I was talking with my old Platoon Sgt. about boot....and how great it was and how easy kids get off in boot these days. After about ten minutes of that we both looked at each other and were like WTF it was horrible....who are we kidding I am glad they don't get the shit we got. Things change......people who don't become obsolete.

I understand the new people who can grate on your nerves because well they are new, young, and DIFFERENT from what you are comfortable with....but the key is all of us were that GUY at one time. People who forget that and bitch about the noob look like idiots because everyone was a noob at one point.

Back on target. If the old gaurd doesn't like the way something is going then you know what you do something about it. Stop in, post, make the place you want it, or at least try and do something. You aren't going to stop the winds of change but you can guide them.

Hate to see you go. I fold because I like the team spirit, but I can see how you feel it's deteriorated in the past few years. It's not all about the points, not all about the Aussies, not about the [H]orde even. This is a humanitarian endeavor, and the team is secondary.
I'm done. Good luck kind folk. I'm finished.
Good luck with whatever you move on to. You are always welcome back.

Good luck RedShred,

I miss the old days also. The electric bill has forced me to shut down most of my farm also. However, I will continue to fold even if it is only one boxen. I started folding because I attended too many funerals. The good friends that I found here were just a bonus. Come back anytime you feel like it.

Take care,

T-3

hey red no matter what, you are still part of this family. you can not run far anuff away. but you will be missed.

take care old friend. and keep in touch.

Sorry to hear that. As someone who's only been folding for a couple of months I hate to see another old-timer go.

As for the points, sure I may complain about getting a small WU here and there, but it's no big deal. I've had too many friends and family get diagnosed with cancer lately, and just lost my aunt to a brain tumor a little while ago. Sure I would like the team to be in first, but just because we aren't doesn't mean I'm about to quit folding. Stanford gets the same results no matter what place we're in.

I'm sure everyone will agree that you'll always be welcome here.

Just my .02

i really hate to see you go. i know what you mean about the team changing... when i first showed up (in 2002, i believe) the DC subforum was basically dead. no offense, but there was not much posting going on. the team was strong as ever, but it was a lot quieter.

now, the team is far more vocal. there are still those who only care about points (and there always will be... any excuse for a competition) i think it may just seem like there are more who care about points because there are more people talking about points.

that is beneficial in a way. regardless of why people are folding, stanford still benefits. the OCAU vs. Horde competition has produced a huge number of results for stanford. point output for our teams has just about doubled since august or so. that is an incredible increase.

i'm not saying that it is a good thing that people are folding only for points. those are the short-term folders... the truly motivated are the ones who fold for a cure. however, stanford gets closer to a cure for each WU returned regardless of why it was done.

still, if you leave, i'd like to thank you for your contributions to date and make sure that you know that you are welcome back any time you want to return. good luck.

Red I seriously hope you will reconsider, I really don't wish to see the loss of another old guard member and friend.

You're definetly right the team has changed from the once close-knit group with a single purpose we once were, I knew times were changing when old guard members such as Gaiden bowed out. However the way I look at it is the people just here for points won't last long, they never do, once they've moved on to the next conquest the new members that remain will become part of the new core group.

I still remain here doing the project of my choice, for the most part still as much a lurker as I always was. CT, majic, Bill and quite a few others are still here as well, we just tend to be less talkative in the forums these days, I'm sure relic will return as soon as he completes the RL work he's been doing.

As for the temps trust me I know, I almost melted yesterday and 114 is on the way, it's only going to get hotter as summer progresses. Regardless I still have all my machines going full blast.

Let us not lose another old guard member, especially one that has proved to be so [H]ard as shown below.

gardening.jpg

Anyway I really hope you will reconsider. If you're looking for me, you know where to reach me, I just haven't seen you login there for quite a while. Stop by and we can chat, as long as I haven't passed out from heat exhaustion I will be happy to chat with you.

1 [H]ard Team, 2 Great Projects, 1 Common Goal..... The Cure

Sorry to see you go, RedShred. You will not be forgotten.

I started this whole addiction with setti. The idea of networking some computers to solve a problem got me hooked. When I learned that we could use this technology to help find cures for some medical stuff the hook went deeper. I switched to Genome@ home for the [H] and added boxen until I had a respectable farm (well 12 computers in a small 1 bedroom apartment anyway).
The whole experience has been great. I bought the parts for each computer and assembled them all by my self. I learned a lot about networking and got my A+ and network+ certs.
Now I have 6 computers running and I turn off 3 when I am not using them to learn networking stuff. I don’t worry about stats and just run the default installs.

Thanks King N for posting that picture, I was thinking of it.

Things do change; it’s a process none of us can control.

God knows I’ve written my fair share (maybe more) of posts in frustration and even bewilderment and anger at things that have happened. Every time I do I go look at the “old guys” like us who are still folding, smile and continue on.

Could I be putting the money elsewhere? Of course, but then I remember why I started in the first place. Can I really afford to continue? Not really actually, but some how I manage to keep 8 CPU’s alive because I BELIEVE good will come from all this. Good already has come from what we do. New diagnostic techniques have been achieved and improved upon due to our efforts. That’s documented and even my Doctor is aware of the various projects and the results. It’s not all for naught.

Re the “points whore” point of view, well, who care why people fold as long as they fold. An individual’s motivation is personal to say the least.

Each of us must examine our own reasons for what we do and why we do it. In any club membership changes on an ongoing basis and face it, we are but a club of sorts.

We seem to have spanned a generation, it happens. We grow older, the young come in and fill and add to our numbers. It’s the evolutionary nature of what we do and in every endeavor we participate in.

Take some time, do what you must but know you always have a home here. What ever happens be well in what ever you do.

We had a really unique situation back when this team started. We had a huge number of enthusiastic teammates and we were all new to each other. The forum was humming at all hours of the day. As rogue_jedi noted, the forum slowed down a lot after that (even as the team kept chugging along) and I think we've gotten a little bit of the energy and enthusiasm back recently. Things have changed, but in general we've always been the same type of people. Most are here to do their part in finding cures for disease, but others are here just for some fun competition. As long as they stick around and fold, I don't care why they're doing it even if I do get more of a feeling of "family" from the former type of teammate than the latter.

One thing that's always been a constant around here is that every folder counts, whether it's a big corporate farmer, or a lone guy out in Arizona trying to keep a dusty 800 MHz Dell clean and folding. You're welcome back anytime. Until then, we'll miss you, Red.

Best of luck to you.

If it's too hot, turn off some machines.

Don't like K13 as a mod, say so.

Point whores- Go to a different team then.

Old Friends- No one can answer this but the folks themselves.

Stop putting money in this- I think that's really not the whole point of any DC project. Spare CPU cycles is the trick, buying computers with the sole purpose of running any DC is not spare cycles. Yea, it sure is fun thou, and that's all on the person making the choice to buy the gear. Nobody forced anyone into buying gear for a DC project that I've ever heard of.

Sorry if I sound like an ass, I'm tired. But people seem to make a huge deal out of some of these things and for me it's either shit or get of the pot.

Dude,
It is sad to see you go, but I feel your pain. Many of your reasons, and a few of my own, caused me to all but stop folding. What brought me back was the need to run my system most of the time now, and hating for that electricity and CPU time to go to waste. I have my Athlon 1800+ clocked down to 766MHz, and my intake fan unplugged. Folding as a background task on your main system should not be a burden, but if it is, I understand. You have given much for a long time, and have earned a rest. Your honor will not be lessened. Just stop by once in a while and let everyone know you are well.

As has been said before.

Thx for the contrabutions to science, and
you are always welcome back.

I will point out one thing that I have noticed with the folding team. There is a lot of honesty and integrity in the group. I feel comfortable giving computer gear away to people I don't know because I believe that they will put it to good use. I expect them to do the right thing in most cases.

Do I think a lot of the people are immature? Of course. How long they have been in the DC forum or been [H]ard members doesn't have much to do with my evaulation of their immaturity. Neither does their age. Unhappy_mage and Rouge_jedi, for instance, are very mature even though they are close to 1/2 my age. There are 30-40 year olds on this forum that are more immature.....

My point? I have 2:

1. To me it is about community. The group here is a mix of people with a common hobby (folding) that have good intentions are trustworthy and though sometimes annoying I am genuinely glad to know exist on this earth. I am proud to be a member of this group.

2. In any community, or family, there will be things that irratate you and change will be constant. Someone might do things for what you consider the wrong reason (folding for points). Realize that your feelings may be clouding your evaulation of other people. There are quite a few new team members that fold for personal reasons (family members with cancer, having to deal with a grandparent or parent that has slowly had their mind rot due to Alzheimer) but do not talk about it. It is much safer to talk about points and figure out how to get more people to fold for science and the glory of the [H]orde.

Anyways, more than I normally type....

Just another 2 cents worth - as far as "point whores" goes I really don't see any here anymore. We used to have people complaining about getting and killing Tinkers routinely.
They would only go for the "high value" proteins. I still see people complaining about getting a string of lower value units, but don't read about killing for new units.
Sure we want the "best bang" for the buck.
I probably put in an extra 3 hours at work each week for my sneakernet machines. If I could turn those hours into cash I could get a new Dell every pay period.
Fold On!!

I guess the real point is real men don’t “pull out” they wait for total exhaustion and finally they “fall out”. After a brief recovery period they try again, no? ;) :D

^^^^^ :) A classic old Billism.

Well I never folded for points, since I only have one PC now having shipped all extra parts around last year.

However Relic told me that even my puny points matter not on the whole, since together they add-up to a lot of something.

Wise Old Relic.....and that AtomicMoose guy. ;)

I'm hoping that RedShred's just reached that point of exhaustion and will be back once things cool off and the warming effect of a room full of computers is once again a good thing!

Red I'm sorry to see you go.

I'm still here, old friend, still pounding away with what I can afford to run.

"Afford" being the operative word. I've seen my power bill go from ~.06 KwH to almost a dime per, 14 CPUs eating spark juice (833 P3 to 2.0gHz A64), summer's coming to the Delmarva Peninsula soon enough, and with my stepson and his ravening horde out of the house now, enough renovation work needed to make a contractor weep for joy... :(

I may have to furl my sails soon enough, but for the time being, I'll keep running and see what pops over the horizon.

Fair skies and a following breeze, my friend!

It's always sad when a any folder leaves.

If I contributed to your departure, I apologize.

Good luck & take care. Come back soon!

this place is nuts, go ahead and delete my above post as well (didn't see the first deletion or I wouldn't have bothered to post the reply above).

F@H to me is a friendly competition for a good cause. Some of you are taking it way too seriously , lol

We'll miss you RedShred... If it weren't for you and a few of the other "old timers", I wouldn't be folding... You're welcome to come back anytime... We'll always be here, fighting the great fight from the [H]orde's battalion!!

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Dude, Have a good life. Thanks for all the effort you put into this team. Don't know what else to tell ya other than good luck with whatever you do. Also, you always have friends here if you need anything.
