PSU Upgrade

Considering a PSU upgrade to power a newer video card but am unsure what to aim for.

I wanted a 460 or possibly the newer Amd's comign out, but don't want to risk powering it with my current PSU, a corsair vx450.

My specs are as follows:
Asus P5Q Pro
Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz
4Gb Memory
WD 6400AAKS
MSI 4850
Cm690 Case (if it matters)
Corsair CMPSU-450VX 450-Watt VX Series 80 Plus

Any suggestions? Thinking a 600-700w.

Saw this deal, comes out to be $60. is 650w enough for the next couple years?

Probably

Probably. Maybe $40 to $50.

Plenty for that rig, yes. As long as Nvidia and AMD continue to develop more power efficient GPUs, should be enough for future video cards.

Went ahead and ordered the corsair 650tx. Can't beat it for $60, especially since that was my price range.

I have had several Corsair PSU's and they have yet to fail me (knock on wood). Currently running the 850TX. I think you will be very satisfied with your 650. They can power so much more than a normal 650w.

No, they cannot. Corsair's 650W PSUs can still only provide 650W of power, just like any other quality 650W PSU.

I put them both together, and came up with the fact that the Corsair and other quality 650W PSUs can provide much, much closer to their advertised 650W ratings than a lower-quality 650W PSU. It's not that the PSUs can deliver more than their stated wattage; it's just that the lesser-quality 650W units cannot deliver their stated wattage without going out of spec on ripple - and a really crappy 650W unit can't even provide anywhere near that without having some of its internal components explode.

That may be what he meant, but it's not what he said. I feel it should be made clear that a 650W PSU, even a good one from Corsair, should not ever be used to supply more than 650W of power.

It is what he said and what he meant. It can power more than a normal 650W PSU. Period. As with any other high quality PSU.

I too am thinking about a new PSU. I feel that I'm taking a gamble every time I turn on my computer powered by a 500W Rosewill and was thinking of the 650TX or 750TX from Corsair. Great minds think alike.

A quality PSU is a "normal" PSU. If a "650W" PSU cannot actually supply 650W, then it is not a normal 650W PSU. Stop assuming that the norm is PSUs that cannot live up to their rating. The baseline when it comes to PSUs is units that do what the label says they can do while remaining in spec.
