Anyone have a similar experience?

Currently running E6600 + 4870 setup on a Seasonic S12-430W. Was cleaning out my case and when I plugged everything back in, no bootup. The fan and power light flicker for just 1/10th of a second then die. Using a friend's equipment, I figured out I can boot using a 4850 but not my 4870. The 4870 is not broken, works in another machine. Is the PSU the likely culprit? It was running fine for about a month.

Hmm it could be the power supply as 430 watts seems pretty low for an 4870 + e6600.. im not a psu expert so someone else could probably help you out more than me.

edit: are you sure the cpu is properly placed? You should try to reseat the cpu and the memory it could help! I remembered i had a similar situation and i reseated my cpu and ram cause i took it out then when i put in didn't boot then i reseat it as said above and worked... but it could still be the psu.

From all the numbers I looked up, 430W should be just enough, but my PSU is a couple years old. I reseated everything, even checked the ram / cpu in another machine, all worked. What signs are typical of not enough power? I get a flash of power, then nothing.

If it isn't turning on with the 4870 but works with the 4850, you could be tripping the OCP. Although 430W should be enough for your system, the age of your PSU means that it is not capable of outputting what it was originally rated for any more. It does sound to me like you need to purchase a new PSU that is powerful enough to cope with the demands of your system.

I think you're right. I resorted to simply trading video cards with my buddy until I decide which new psu to buy. Thanks for everybody's help.

I recommend the BFG LS-550 which can be had for only $67 from buy.com.

Though if you want a big bang for the buck PSU, go with the PC P&C 750 for $90:
PC Power & Cooling S75CF 750W PSU - $90

Just note that the PC P&C 750 is complete and total overkill for your system. Your system does not need a 750W PSU. With that said, the $90 PC P&C 750 is an excellent PSU deal considering the prices of other good quality yet lower wattage PSUs.

Your system is probably pulling under 300W's, most of it +12V amperage, about +12V@25A.

If you are going to OC, that can add about 10% to 30% to power consumption.

And we always want a minimum of 30% overhead for cool & quiet operation.

So we want a minimum of +12V@40A.
