Psu recommendation for crossfire

Hi all,

Following from a previous post I think I'm going to go ahead and get a 2nd MSI 6970 lightning, theses cards take 2 x 8 pin pci, so what would you guys recommend being a good psu to support it? I currently have a OCZ 650watt which I know won't cut it.

I actually ran to 6970s with a Antec 650 on my older setup before switching to a corsair 1200 with a tri-fire setup
 
The videocard(s) isn't the only variable in the system. How about telling us the rest of your specs?

Any good 750W PSU will be fine for that setup. The Corsair TX750 V2 is a good budget option.
 
I would check each PSU you are considering against AMD's Certified Power Supplies list for the 6970. Make sure the PSU supports two 6970s.

For example, someone suggested the TX750. Here is the blurb on AMD's website:

Individual manufacturers will also offer PSU configuration utilities. Corsair's can be found here. Based on that configuration, as you appear to have overclocked your processor by about 25%, Corsair recommends something hefty like the TX950W or AX1200 (of course, I assumed you were running multiple hard drives - run the configuration tool yourself based on your own system specs).

I can say from experience that it is easier to have too little available power than you might think; my Corsair HX1000 wasn't configured correctly to run an O/C'ed i7 with dual HD 5870s Eyefinity 6 cards. I actually would have been better off with the TX950 (I went with the 1200, just to be done with it). You'll wish you spent the extra $40 on the 950 if you find yourself power starved, and it never hurts to leave room for future upgrades.
 
For x-fire 6970's that's way overkill. I second the AX750 recommendation, and if you're really that scared, go for an AX850 (or any seasonic X series PSU of the same wattage since they're the OEM).
 
Perhaps. I'm a believer in having more than you need is better than having less, but I realize that isn't for everyone. I just noticed that he's overclocking his system, and we don't know how much else is going on in his rig (how many hard drives, fans, water cooling, etc.).

Am I saying he has to buy the AX1200? Clearly not. I just think that a little overkill is better than realizing 3 or 4 months down the road that you need more than you have.

On a side note, I second the Seasonic recommendation; they build for Corsair, so you might get a little more bang for your buck on the same configuration, since you won't pay the "re-branding" fee.

1200W may be a bit over the top......my deal is, you never know whay you might get next or what new hardware you may install, so I like more is better too.

Seasonic doesn't make the Corsair 1200 AX though, I think its Flextronics or some such.

I have a 1200 and it has been very good. My son's computer has dual GTX 580s and runs just fine on the older HX 850.:D
 
Hey guys, thank you so much for everyones advice and opinions! It really has gone onboard! I'm thinking for that reason I may hit the AX850 Corsair psu! Also I didn't really give out much of my system spec, so i'll try and reveal it all! Basically she's running ok as I can see with the 650 so i'm hoping that the second MSI card will be a good choice with the AX850... I don't think I will be replacing anything else anytime soon!
