PSU or overheating problem?

I've been getting some disturbing crashes while running several high-end games on my PC lately. It can successfully run these games at lower settings, but when I specifically tried to push the limits (to see how far I could go and still have it playable) my computer immediately shuts off.
The games are the demos of Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3. Again, I can run them on lower settings, but when I push it that the fps drops to 20-30, it will last for a few minutes and then the pc will turn off. Does this sound like a overheating problem or a dying PSU problem?
I have been able to restart my computer immediately afterwards every time.

Ultra 500W X-Finity Power Supply 120mm Fan / Titan
AMD AthlonX2 3800+ 2Ghz
two EVGA 7800gt running in SLI
2GB DDR PC3200 (mismatched brands, but never had a RAM issue before)
EVGA 133-K8-NF41 Socket 939 nForce4 SLI Motherboard
Maxtor 250GB hard drive
Lite-on DVD+RW optical drive
Windows XP SP2
Nvidia Forceware 169.09 BETA drivers

I also have three case fans - one PCI slot exhaust (below 2nd video card), one special fan blowing over all the PCI slots, and one fan on my case door. All are 90mm, I believe. There are no regular exhaust fans on the back of the case. (no screw holes, go figure)

The only USB items plugged in were my headset and my mouse. The system is between 1+1/2 and 2 years old. The 7800gt's are slightly different in that one is slightly overclocked and has a 3rd-party fan. I do often leave my system on overnight, sometimes as long as a week or two at a time.

I want to make sure my machine is safe to keep using, and whether it's fixable by just replacing the PSU.
Thanks

An easy test would be to take the side panel off and see if it helps. The lack of that rear exhaust fan is a concern, and if the problem lessens (can play longer) or goes away, I would say it was heat buildup in the case. The other thing I am thinking is the big power hit is going from 2d to 3d, I am not postive but I would think that there would be little additional power draw going from 3d low res to 3d high res, some but not a lot. It might not change a thing and tell you nothing but it costs nothing to try and might tell you a lot.
