Okay i've done some looking at psu's and I really would prefer modular, as with a mid-tower case with a window, cable management would be far easier with less cables.
my build will probably look like this

CPU- AMD x4 955 BE
MOBO- M488td-evo
RAM- G-Skill 2x4 g 1333
GPU- ATI 6870
DRIVES-2

I assume i'll need 500-600 watts....probably 600 is safer. Budget for psu I don't want to exceed 100 and that's pushing it. I know you guys are going to have your favorites, but if you think I could get away with one of the lesser ones....

NOT MODULAR-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371031 figured if not modular this is probably best to settle with. BUT i'd rather modular

Push the envelope and get the Corsair unit, you'll be happy that you didn't save on your PSU in the long run :)

About 500 watts is enough to power that system. If you plan to crossfire, 600 watts is the way to go.

Get the GX700, is best buy if you can get that huge rebate.. if not, get the Lepa G500 which fits your budget and is plenty for your rig.. you're system won't touch 400W at full load..

A bit pricy at around 279 on Amazon ,but I'm going for the Corsair 1200 AX, since I'm putting about 2500 into this new computer I want a good PSU with good stable power and everything I've read indicates good clean power.I;ve had lots of issues usining cheapo PSU's in past builds , so I'm not skimpining on this build .

Getting the AX1200 can either be a very stupid move or a smart move, it entirely depends on the components you will be using. In general, you just want to get a good performing power supply that will power your build with your planned upgrades. Since it is a 2500 dollar computer, I'm assuming it's going to have a lot of power hungry components which would make use of a AX1200. However, the AX1200 is definitely NOT the right PSU for the OP.

Yeah the cougar does look nice, and I was doubting i'd surpass 400 watts full load as well, but idk if i'll want to add more drives or get a more power hungry card and processor down the line. I just want to have a little headroom which is why I figure I need at least 600 watt. That lepa is nice , but I just feel like for the price I might as well get the corsair. I am kinda stuck in between whether to grab it, or will I see the corsair for the price soon again?

The $120 price is its average price for the past few months. However whether or not it will have free shipping is the better question as it's pretty random when free shipping is available on that PSU.

As I told you earlier, go with the Corsair.

The Lepa is a better unit than the HX650, and for 90$ is very well priced and will run any single GPU config without a sweat.., however the GX 700 is simply hard to pass at that reduced price, move and get it while it's still available ;)

Wow man I just can't win, I went on newegg to buy the Cougar psu today and it was sold out.....haha and I missed the bigger rebate on the Corsair, would I be making a bad decision with the other Cougar psu's?

Tough luck man :\

Cougar is the high end brand of HEC, their GX and SX/SE/S lines go head to head with the other high end lines of various manufacturers like Seasonic X, Corsair AX/HX, Enermax Revo 85+ and Modu/Pro 87+, Antec HCP etc, the problem is that they're generally overpriced so they're usually worth buying only with hefty rebates.. looking @ newegg now, the SX700 makes a good deal, outside that there's nothing on newegg from Cougar worth buying atm

edit: spelling

Okay I think i'll go ahead and bite on that psu. All of the psu I listed above is basically what I had narrowed down my choices to in the 120$ and under price range. That was also hoping i'd get rebates that would at least bring the units down 20-30$. The price on the 650HX is just so steep. You think i'll do alright with that sx700, and why is that better than the other 2 700watt courgars for just about the same price?

What you listed in the OP is a weird mix of trash and gold, and by no means the best you can find on newegg given your budget..

RAIDMAX RX-850AE -> trash, it's an Andyson Nuclear inside, an 80+ Bronze unit, not 80+ Gold(Raidmax sends for certification different units than what they sell) and it's a 750W unit, not a 850W as advertised..
Antec NEO ECO 620C -> value Seasonic unit, decent PSU, overpriced
Antec TruePower New TP-550 -> Excellent Seasonic platform, brilliant vreg and noise/ripple for a mainstream unit, not cheap.. the entire True Power New line is made of great units..
CORSAIR HX650 -> Seasonic S12E Bronze inside, good mainstream unit, but you can find better units at that price point.
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M700 -> 600W good Enhance unit, 5 year warranty.
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M600 -> 500W unit, see above
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W -> 550W decent Sirfa/Sirtec unit, nothing special..
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W -> 500W unit, see above
KINGWIN Lazer LZ-660 -> solid Super Flower 560W unit(Crystal Plus)

Yeah it's the best choice of everything listed by far, it is an updated Cougar S700, you can find a review here, it is an 80+ Silver that will deliver Gold efficiency on 230VAC, it has good regulation and good ripple suppression, it's cool and quiet.. it is in a different class in all those regards, compared to the other 700W Cougar offerings.. if you're buying Cougar PSUs, keep it strictly to the GX/SX/SE/S lines, the premium offerings..

Wow, thank you a lot for that breakdown on the psu's I listed. I really want to bite on that Cougar sx700, but i'm just not sure. That review you posted was for the s700 and this is the review for the sx700 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-psu-efficiency,2796-15.html. My budget is really 100 after rebates, preferrably less haha, but I don't know what units I missed that were modular in that price range.

Not relevant really.. your best two choices inside that budget are the Lepa G500 and the SX700.
But honestly, the best suggestion i can give its this.. drop 50$ from that budget, drop the modularity request(that system isn't really deserving a 100$ PSU) and get something like an EarthWatts 500D or an XFX Core 450/550W and use the leftover 50$ to get a better platform(Sandy Bridge, an I5 2300 dropped in a P67/Z68 will behave far better in gaming and most anything else than a Deneb/Thuban clocked above 4Ghz);)

If you can not get the solid Corsair PSU, the next mediocre psu cheap/reliable would be OCZ.
( I did not have good experience with earthwatts, my luck went with many ocz)

Okay thx for the advice. I'm not really sure about what processor/mobo route i'll go, i'm waiting till after the first week of august to decide and figure that out. People have been implying to go Intel, and I might be able to do that , but we'll see about that in a couple weeks. I think i'm going to pick up that Cougar, the modular really does matter to me, with the open window and such it wil be a hassle to hide all of the wires. I think my budget for everything in the upgrade is 550-600$.
Ram- G skill 45$/bought
Psu- Cougar sx700 100$ AR 80$/ not bought yet
GPU- Sapphire 6870 1g 155 AR/ not bought yet
Which could leave me 320$ for mobo/cpu, If I can make it out to a microcenter an I5 2500k coul maybe be affordable....we'll see

np, one mention though..
Tom has as much relevance in the PSU review media as Guinea-Bissau in European diplomacy(which is well below absolute 0).. the review i linked, done by Jonny on the S700 is much more relevant even though the S700 is a precursor to the SX700, but here you go, the best SX700 review on the web, done by Crmaris, the same guy who reviews PSUs for TechPowerUp ;)
