I wanted a new PSU for my WHS server.

I could either use a tx650 or a earthwatts 500d.

I like the tx650 because of all the extra connections it has.

Earthwatts I like because it is bronze certified.

Server specs:

X2 555 unlocked - 4 cores
Onboard video
2 x 2 gb ddr3 ram
10-15 Sata drives

the currently PSU i am using is a coolermaster gx 650. I have to use splitters on the molex to get extra sata connections right now.

I would favour the TX650 out of those two options. Is there any reason you are only considering those two? There may be other better options available for a similar cost.

I got both of them right now for fairly cheap. The 500d for 50 and the tx650 for 65. both brand new.

+1 for the Corsiar, you won't have to use splitters to get a ton of drives connected (just molex-SATA converters).

Also, OP, off-topic, but is there any reason you are unlocking the two dormant cores on the CPU? WHS does not need a quad-core CPU, just give it 2GB of RAM and a basic dual core (single core with HT is almost good enough, but not when DEMigrator is running :( ) and it will perform astoundingly.

Or you can save a few bucks and go with a Corsair 450 or even a 400watter, both of which will very easily power that hardware.

EDIT: nvm, didn't notice the 15 hard drives. disregard. Hopefully you have a controller card that supports staggered spin up.

Not true, depends on what you use your WHS for. I have mine doing transcoding on the fly for video streaming and it eats up a fair bit of processor especially if you have more than one thread going.

But back to the PSU's. Both your choices are solid, however the Corsair is better for the $$. I personally like the XFX 650W for $59 better. It is modular and every bit as good as the Corsair quality wise.

Ahh, I don't do any transcoding (just streaming from an NFS share to a WDTV Live box), but I can definitely see where that would need the extra muscle!

As for that XFX PSU, it only has 6 SATA and 6 molex cables, so OP would need to use power splitters for his array (~15 drives).

Totally misread the amount of drives. Yeah that is a ton of connections he will need.

Yeah, at first I was gonna suggest the 430w Corsair basic PSU, but then I reread the OP before I hit reply and was like "Ohhhh. That won't work." :D

thanks for the input guys. Returning the 500d and keeping the corsair.

The XFX looks nice but i don't want to deal with rebates as i got the corsair for 65 without rebates.
