Hello all,

Alright so I just ordered a new ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard which comes with the new AMD AM2 socket.

Now I want a very good and reliable PSU for this system and I was hoping for any advice. The system specs are as followed:

- AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Orleans, Socket AM2
- ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
- 2x 1 GB Corsair DDR2 800mhZ RAM
- 256MB GeForce 7900GT Videocard (No SLI)
- 1 or 2 DVD Burners
- 2x Sata Harddrives
- 4x 120MM Case Fans

I was hoping to keep the PSU in the $60-$90 budget. And since I am ordering from newegg I would be extremely grateful if you guys could give me direct NEWEGG links.

PS. I read somewhere that for a system with a single PCI-E card it is recommended to have a minimal of 26A on the +12V rail. Now I've seen a view PSU with a (FOR EXAMPLE) +12V1 16A, +12V2 16A. Would I have to sum these to up to get a total of 32A +12V Rail?

Thanks alot in advance everyone!

Actually, the AM2's seem to require less power.

Mine's only running at 15C idle and 25C full load w/ stock cooling!!!!!!!!

Not normally only a very few PSU's have additive 12v rails. The 12v combined output is capped at whatever the rectifier that feeds them is capped at.

Whats the ambient temperature in the room with the system, cause that sounds like faulty software reading to me.

25C. Room temp.

Yeah, it's software, but even the temp probe on my Fan Commander is telling me 25C under load when placed on the heatspreader.

A Seasonic S12-380 would do the trick, unless you went SLI 7900GTX or some other card or combination of cards that drew more power than that.

EDIT: You don't have to order from Newegg, especially if the cost after shipping from another e-tailer is lower than adding it to your Newegg card, but I suppose it may be more convenient. Unfortunately, Newegg is rather overpriced.

S12-380 from Newegg
S12-380 from Case-mod, guaranteed latest revision

The M2N32-SLI has an 8-pin EPS12V connector, just so you people know. I would look for something with that connector.

It's physically impossible to be under room temperature while aircooling. Same goes for water.

What exactly is not possible?

It isnt possible to get your PC under room temperature with air cooling because youre blowing room temperature air on your components. Nothing is cooling the air itself down.

Precisely. Now, if you're using something which physically chills the surface or the air (e.g. peltiers, air conditioners, etc) you can get below room temperature.
One of my favorite cheats is a peltier strapped to copper tubing, with air blowing overtop it, or mounted on the exterior. Doesn't have to be much of a peltier to act as an 'assist' (e.g. 26-40W,) but to get sub-room figure you'd probably need 100W+ and fairly active air movement over the hot side.

And yes. AM2 uses less power idle by a good amount.

OP, I was just wondering why are you getting a $200 motherboard and a $300 video card but only spending $50-$90 on a PSU? Just some food for thought.

$50-$90 is enough.

Well first of all, because I never emphized the importance of the PSU up untill a few days ago when I started reading on the internet and therefor already blew my budget by a small bit.

And second I've read around and I do believe that this Antec Truepower PSU for $80 is by now means a "cheap" version and is sufficient for my system (for I will not be using SLI and I've also been informed that the AM2 CPU's use a considerbly less amount of power). --> In case I am mistaken please correct me

You're right! WTF is up with that 15C reading, I don't know.

It's definitely 25C in the room though. And sitting here running load test software it's not moving from 25C and I would think that even a "perfect chip" would have to get a little hotter than room.

The motherboard's probe is obviously fubared. I'm going to guess it's 25C idle and probably 35C under load. Still cooler than others. But definitely my numbers are way off.
