I'm planning on building a new gaming system soon, and need PSU advice. I'm planning on a 1156 chip (not sure i5 or i7 yet, but let's just assume i7), and will be overclocking the CPU to ~3.6 regardless of which I choose. Will be getting 2x2gigs of 1600, 1-2 harddrives, An antec 900 with it's full amount of stock case fans ( top 200mm, and say 5 120's) and a gtx 470. I never plan on going sli, and don't think I will need a physx card. I'm thinking a corsair, ocz, thermaltake, or anything u guys suggest in the 650-700 watt range. First off, is my 650-700 watt assumption correct, and what does anyone suggest I go with?

I've had great luck with the ANTEC TP-750 and have the 550 in some older systems too.

600 watts is more than enough to power your system. Figure the power consumption of the GTX 470 at worst case scenario 250 watts. Figure worst case scenario for an i7 is 170 watts. Motherboard, 50 watts, including RAM. Hard drives, 30 watts total. Each fan, worst case scenario, 8 watts each, total of 48 watts. You're looking at 550 watts worst case scenario, at full maximum resource usage (running furmark and prime95 at the same time). Normal day to day usage, you probably won't even break 500 watts, even while gaming. A 650 Corsair should be enough, and be solid, and can be found in the $80 range, if you look hard enough and apply Bing. Or you can go totally overkill with the new Seasonic x-650 power supply, but if you have a thirst for top-notch components, that's what you would want to get. I believe Corsair is now offering 7 year warranty on their power supplies.
 
I think a quality 650 watt PSU should be enough. Besides for upgrades in the future, most cpus and gpus tend to get more powerful and more efficient at the same time.
 
Newegg is having a small corsair power supply sale. You can get the TX650 for $87 shipped (also has a $20 MIR) to bring the total down to $67 total, or you could go a little beefer and get the TX750 for $99 shipped and it to has a $20 MIR for $79 total.

Just thought I would bring it up.
 
Yea I saw the sale, to bad I don't need the PC yet.... might be worth buying the PSU now because it won't be any cheaper later on.... and as far as less wattage and higher efficiency, well, thats what I always thought up until the 400 line. The 400's sucks a ton of power. And I would like some future proof to this build, which is why I think the 750 might be the best buy. I have that PSU in my current system running a 920 DO 3.57 and a GTX 275 with no problems what so ever. Not that I will, but could the corsair 750 run SLI 470's?
