So my current media center PC's motherboard is very flaky and maybe posts on its third try and it eats up a huge amount of electricity. So i am miniaturizing it. I have an old PS3 60GB version sitting around that died to the YLOD and i couldn't resurrect it. So i am going to shove an entire Media center into it.

Here is what i have so far and any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Sticking to the older LGA775 socket type since i am salvaging the Q6700 out of that crappy motherboard. And these are the parts that I ordered. Will take pictures as soon as i get them.

2TB fullsize HDD
One of the cheap Hitachi 5900rpm ones that I had left over from my server build.

Sadly i had to get new ram, all my DDR2 is only 1GB sticks and i wanted 4 gigs in this PC
Corsair 2 x 2GB

Motherboard The onboard graphics should work great for 1080 video and for the emulators i plan on installing on this PC. Honestly didn't have much to pick from for motherboards that were 775 and had decent onboard graphics.
ZOTAC-GF9300

I plan on buying a Blu-Ray player as well that pulls the disk in, but delaying that since it isn't essential yet and it is a little pricey being over 100$

I plan on mounting the ITX motherboard on the left side of the case and the hard drives under the Blu-Ray drive. I found an instructable on how to modify the PS3 card reader to work with a computer. I will have to do this as well if it will still fit with the motherboard in the case.
My primary use for this PC will be to install Windows 7 on it and have XBMC installed on it as well with the 2TB HDD for storage so if i decide to take it to a friends. Also if possible i want to sync 4 PS3 controllers with it as well for some wicked Mario Kart action on a PS3 i mean PC.

PICTURES!!

I just noticed there is a separate section for this in the worklogs section. Can a moderator please move it. thank you.

Just picked up a 12V craftsman drill, and a cheapy 20$ tool shop rotatory tool (knock off of a dremel). Looks to be of good quality though. Going to start drilling and tapping holes in the next few days. And any suggestions on what color to paint the PS3 would be nice.

Updated with pictures. I am still waiting on my wire sleeving kit to come in the mail. I will have to cut away the bottom half of the posts to get the motherboard to fit.

I'd stick with PS3 black... I personally love the look of the ps3.

Intriguing little build!

Ok i put this project off for long enough. I finally have my workbench setup and and getting stuff done. My slot loading blu-ray drive just came in today and i got all my taps and screws today as well. I have cut out the back of the PS3 for the Motherboard. Ordering some Female USB wires with Headers to take advantage of the 4 empty usb slots in the front.

moved this to work logs, since, you know, its a work log ;)

4x PS3 controllers is easy, either via bluetooth or USB with the motionjoy software.

You can set them to be virtual xbox controllers (which lots of games will only use, which is good because lots of games now will only use shitty xbox controllers) or just generic controllers, or map keyboard keys/mouse movement/buttons to the controller buttons. It will also work with the other PS3 peripherals like move controllers and the remote.

That sounded like an advert...:D

Love motioninjoy software!

As I recall, it can support up to 7 connections on one bluetooth module.

Anyways, nice build, hope to see a finished one soon.

Alright i have been working on this all weekend and i am in the finishing stages. Just waiting on a few parts to arrive. Still need a slimline sata adaptor for my slot loading slot loading blu-ray drive(Lite-On DL-4ETS). Didn't realize i needed I needed a slimline adaptor for it.

So here is a picture of it all up and running. Couldn't find a DVI cable so i had to use vga for testing it. The big HDD(2TB) is seured by 2 screws through the bottom of the case. I am planning on using double sided tape to secure the laptop HDD to the top of the big HDD.

The 4 USB ports are superglued into place, glad the motherboard didn't get in the way.

My blu-ray drive is going to be mounted to the top half of the shell. Probably just going to use some super glue to line it up perfectly with the orginal PS3 disk slot.

I have run out of USB headers sadly. I still want to mod the orignal memory card reader of the PS3 to run with windows. Got the idea from thisInstructable. I think it would add a nice touch to the PS3 flare of it. Just need to practice my soldering. So back to my USB header problem. The stupid zotac wireless adaptor takes up 2 usb headers when it only needs one, might just piggy back the memory card reader to it.

I had some grounding issues with the plastic case, but a few ground wires took care of that. I am thinking about making an instructable for this. It really wan't all that hard to do.

So i just got my adaptor for my blu-ray drive. Had to make sure the drive worked before i glued it in place. Thing ejects cds like a rocket. Since this PS3 chasis has seen some better days I am going to buy a skinit vinyl cover for it.

A friend mocked this up for me.
XBMCLogos.jpg

I am planning on having XBMC running on it the majority of the time. And have all the emulators and stuff streamlined into, hence the huge logo in the middle.

But i am thinking about having it say PC3 instead and just have XBMC as a little logo around it like all the others. Also i think it would be cool to have the bottom of the skin list everything compatible with it like this. but have Nintendo, Sega, Atari, etc listed instead.

Well i finished this a while ago, but never got around to posting pictures of the final project. I ran it without the top half on for about a year. Realized i really needed the big 120mm fan on the top to keep it from overheating when i assembled it. Sadly i never got a huge sticker for the top like i planned.

Also has turned into a PLEX streamer instead of XBMC.
