PS3 Owner Refunded for Missing "Other OS"

Don't be such an asshole. I use the "Other OS" option on my PS3, and I have my own place.

It is also completely, 100% irrelevant if very few people use the feature. The feature was advertised, Sony is now removing it. That cannot be condoned. Personally I think everyone should jump on the sue Sony bandwagon over this if for no other reason than to send a message that we, as consumers, won't put up with this shit - even if they had never used the Other OS option nor had any desire to.

You prove my point......I wish Sony would pay you and the 4 other people who complain about this.

#1 We have known for a long time now that the slim would not have Other OS.

Which is why nobody is talking about the Slim - because it didn't have the advertised feature that was removed. This has nothing to do with the Slim at all.

#2 Commercial applications that are still using older PS3 versions will just not update their firmware. Is it really that difficult? I mean I guess the military needs to connect to PSN?

And what about non-commercial applications? What about those of us who use Other OS AND want to game and watch blu-ray movies? You're basically telling all of us trying to use what we paid for to fuck off. And my response to that is simply "fuck you".

The retailer get the money back from Sony. The retailer in not being punish in any way. *IF* the retailer refused to give the refund then they would be punished.

Likewise if sony fails to refund the retailer the retailer can take them to court.

please keep up

You should probably try keeping up. When Sony signs a contract with certain vendors they stipulate whether or not they will accept open good products back. Sony was notorious for this several years ago.
The margin on electronis is so slim that in just dealing with a return on some items can mean the retailer is taking a loss.

Consumer laws in the Uk and the eu as a whole are great, ok fair enough it is sony's problem, but the consumer didnt buy the console from sony, they bought it from a retailer thus the retailer must then claim the cash back from sony.

Uk consumer laws are a great thing, especially when you end up getting shafted and are in need of them.

How are those VATs doing for you?

This was raised with Amazon, and their policy was to offer a partial refund whether that feature had been used by said consumer or not. It should be noted that in European law responsibility is placed on the retailer and not the manufacturer.
This cost will most likely be passed over to Sony and if such refunds get out of hand, Sony may have no other option than to reinstate ‘Other OS’ or instead take legal action to prove that they are not acting outside of the law.
...

For as long as the PS3 has been out, no one has really tapped into the Other OS feature blah, blah, blah

Please provide one single shred of proof to back up any of the claims you have made...one. Have you conducted surveys? Studied the mountains of end user data to find out who is using their PS3s and how? You work for a government agency in charge of monitoring all "Other OS" installations?

Just FYI...."of the people I know..." is not proof either.

Blah, blah, blah

I already said correct me if I am wrong. If you have proof that someone other than Yellow Dog has made great functionality out of Other OS, please correct me. I guess you misunderstood when I said "if I had to guess". Let me clear it up, I have no numbers as to how many people use it and to what extent.

Again, I honestly did not know Yellow Dog was that popular and I did not know someone exploited any great functionality out of the Other OS function. As far as I know its a novelty at best.

I know Yellow Dog has a small PS3 community (<50 people) and a few other distros but thats about all I know.

Uh, what? I'm fairly positive that you just pulled that <50 people number completely out of your ass.

How are those VATs doing for you?

Actually they are doing great, you see, since I buy stuff with a company credit card I get the majority of things VAT free or can claim the VAT back.

Atleast when we buy stuff we know the exact price at the time of purchase and not 6 months later when a company decides if they want to give you the rebate or not.

So how are those "After Rebate" doing for you?

Sony sucks. When they were in last place... Oh Looky Look what you can do with our console unlike that Nasty 360.

Now they are gaining ground... fook you, We take it back, now that you supported us with our open console, we now taketh away...because you suck!

Uh, not my company personally but its a family business and we all rape it for goodies, I personally have to pay for what I buy, but pay less than I would if I went to a normal high street store, and you can put anything you want on the card and say its for company use, even if it does happen to be a fridge or entertainment system that will magically end up in your own home :)

When it comes to big purchases, anything outside of food or clothes etc, then we normally just goto a couple of huge warehouses that only deal with companies/retailers, in there you can pick up anything from food/clothes/tv's/fridges, basically anything, and all at uber cheap prices.

It does come in uber handy and I wouldnt shop anywhere else if I could get the item I needed in those warehosues, if I couldnt then I can still buy from normal retailers and then get it put through the company accounts and get the vat refunded.

Gladly. YellowDog, Ubuntu, Fedora, and openSUSE all have PS3 ports and all of them are listed on Sony's page about the open platform feature: http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html

I mean really, if you didn't even bother to get the information Sony tells you then you clearly have nothing of value to contribute to this thread.

Nothing new...all fairly small communities.

I am asking for proof of a large community and some increased functionality.

Please run along and get your refund.

What if you bought a PS3 from Circuit City and they closed...but I want to return it? Am I SOL? Anyone know of anything i can do?

I can't, I'm in the USA. Run along and get a fucking clue. If you think installing Linux resulted in no gain in functionality, well, frankly you're a complete idiot.

As NickJames noted above, the backwards compatibility of PS2 games was also used to sell the PS3 initially and that "feature" was partially then completely dropped a while ago. This isn't new territory for Sony.
Really? I didn't know this. Glad I never bought one (and definitely won't now). That was a big reason I bought the PS2...... still able to play the old games - with a slightly better picture.

I don't like Sony much anymore anyway.

I've got two of the old PS3 60 gig models. I must say, this does affect me, in that I no longer get the "other OS" option. But it doesn't bother me, as I never used it to begin with.

Uh, what? I'm fairly positive that you just pulled that <50 people number completely out of your ass.

Nah, I used to run Yellow Dog and frequent the forums. I guess there might be other communities for it but none of the ones I am aware of have any more than 50 people. But for the sake of time you won the internet. I am sorry for you and the other 2% of PS3 users.

Sure you did. I guess that is why YDL's forums have 6,500 registered users? And that there have been 900 people online *at once*? And that's ignoring the mailing lists, which tend to be more popular than forums in Linux land. And Ubuntu's forums have 1,051,375 registered users, with 52,666 of those users active.

And, of course, Fedora and openSUSE also have huge communities as well, just like Ubuntu does.

Not to mention that is only the people who go to the forums. I guarantee you that significantly more people download the distro than participate in the forums.

Registered users doesn't mean much, when those OS's can be used on more than just the PS3 and have been used well before the PS3 was even around.

Only real way to get good figures on who has it, is for Sony to implement some kind of check on the PS3. Where it'll check to see if any other OS is installed on all PS3s. It won't tell us who exactly is using the Linux install, but it'll at least tell us who has a Linux install.

I love how all the sudden people pretend to care about this stupid feature that should have never been there in the first place.

PS3 Slims never had the OtherOS ability. PS3 Slims are the models sold in stores mostly now. Therefor this isn't such a big deal.

The PS3 Slims never had that option and are the only ones in stores, but that doesn't just somehow get rid of the millions of Fat PS3s that are still out there in the world.

Yes because using the entire forum base for an entire distro is representative of how many people use ps3 version. Show me where more than a handful of people ever even talk about Linux PS3 distros. I am not saying people do not use OtherOS...its just an extreme minority to the entire PS3 population. I also do not think you can argue the fact that its mostly a novelty.

Sorry, I'm getting off point now.

Whether or not the feature is used is completely, 100% irrelevant. IF we allow companies to remove advertised features after the fact simply because you have not and don't plan to use the feature, what next? You are allowing companies to have more power over what you paid for. We simply cannot allow that to happen. We MUST send a message to Sony that we want to keep what we paid for, and this post-purchase removal of features will not be tolerated.

What the feature is and how widespread its use is does not matter. By allowing Sony to do this unchallenged you grant them power to do it again. You let other companies know that you're OK with features being removed as long as its not a feature you are using. You're telling them that the majority will not stand up for those getting fucked.

Hevean forbid... Humans using inductive reasoning

Inductive reasoning only works if your conclusion is follows the facts presented. His wasn't. He posted facts about the Slim, and then made a conclusion for the fat. The logic doesn't work.

If there's a class action lawsuit on Sony for this, it just might be cheaper for them to reinstate the other OS option.

But but but, Microsoft stopped Xbox live for the original Xbox...Sorry the OtherOS crowd is a minority but honestly OtherOS does not effect the core of the system.(and it seems Geohot fueled this with his tinkering/hacking)

Sony already weighed the Pro's vs Con's and its not hurting sales.(Hear about the PS3 shortage around GOW 3 release?)

But but but, Microsoft stopped Xbox live for the original Xbox...

As has already been discussed in this thread, that is not the same as what Sony is doing at all. Microsoft is ceasing to offer a service, they are not removing a feature of the console.

Sorry the OtherOS crowd is a minority but honestly OtherOS does not effect the core of the system.(and it seems Geohot fueled this with his tinkering/hacking)

If you're going to quote me, please at least dispute the points I made. OtherOS is an advertised feature. Whether or not it is the "core of the system" depends on you're point of view. For some people, it IS a core feature. For others, it isn't. So yes, OtherOS *DOES* effect the core of the system.

Stop using the xbox live analogy.

Even after Microsoft stops their service, original xboxes can still....wait for it...play online! Oh shit, what now?

They aren't removing the ethernet function advertised on the console itself. They are stopping their service. And guess what? People can (and do) play the original xbox online without xbox live! What a world we live in!

So stop using it because you make yourself look like an idiot.

I think its a valid comparison. No one is stopping you from using OtherOS. It just means you cannot update your PS3 so that you cannot *gasp* use the PSN service.

Btw...only idiots call others idiots.

. OtherOS is an advertised feature.

Where was it advertised? I can't recall ever seeing a commercial that advertised being able to install Linux, and it isn't even on the retail box. I understand that it was a feature that they said it would have, but people are running around acting like it was featured right along playing games, and BD's and that's just not true.

One thing that IS on the box is that it clearly says

"Design and specifications are subject to change without notice"

Personally I don't think they should have removed it, but to be honest, I don't really care that they did. It seems to me that a lot of people are complaining just to complain, and I am sure a lot of people are going to jump at any chance to get money from Sony even if they never used the feature, or planned to, and that's JUST as wrong.
