Ok, so right now the 80gb ps3 is 499 on the egg. With the 20% cashback from paypal that would be like 412 shipped. Ive ALWAYS been a fan of the playstation consoles, and really want to give this one a try. Is it worth it?
 
I just want to let you know that you need to be careful. The people over at slickdeals were going to do this, but they asked a customer service rep and they said no it only applies to the products on that newegg/paypal promo page.

But another customer service rep said it doesn't matter.

So just be prepared to fight, if you have to come january.

(Also remember you only get up to $50 off)




P.S. I would recommend the ps3 to anyone, especially if you are a fan of the playstation series.
 
I'm happy with a Wii and a 360. PS3 is expensive and there really aren't any OMG gotta have exclusive titles out. I don't follow PS3 too closely so that might be a bit off but eh.

I wouldnt get it. Especially since its overpriced. Sure it has better hardware, but the industry is focused on the 360. Its like when the ps2 and xbox came out. Xbox had better hardware but the industry was much more focused on the ps2, though xbox evened up in the very end.

Little Big Planet, Home, MGS4 and a few others that will be coming out.

Theres lots of great games out right now for the ps3 so don't ask if you should, just do it.
 
Another good deal, if you don't already have a sony card, is getting it from sonystyle.com. I grabbed a 40gig for $432 shipped, 0% interest for a year and $100 credit on your first bill. it's incredibly short sighted to count out the PS3.
no denying it stumbled out of the gate, but won't be long before the momentum keeps picking up.

you owe it to yourself to give uncharted and R&C future a shot at the very least. not to mention the other exclusives due out in 08

Nope, I still only see like 3 good games in your list. 3 or 4 really good games and the rest are just decent. So what, make the same list for the 360. The titles are going to whip that list of games out, you know this. Theres countless more top titles for the 360, you have to admit this. I dont even have a next gen console by the way. Ill be getting a 360, after working in a video store and actually seeing how many damn good games there are for the 360. I dont know man, to each his own. Unless you just have to have a ps3 I wouldnt consider it a logical choice in entertainment terms. Personally, the titles on the 360 will def hold my attention a hell of a lot longer then the few select good titles on the ps3. I had a Wii before, but sold that as well due to lack of really good titles. That was a while ago.
 
I bought a ps3 out of pitty for Sony "fan boy". An so far its actually impressed me more than expected, true the games right now are lacking in variety and visually but the ps3 can cure cancer so im told and that makes it worth the $600 plus I spent.;) and gt5 whenever that comes out....

If you are like me and already have a 360...I say no. I picked up a 40GB PS3 about 3 weeks ago and have had nothing but headaches (random crashing, network disconnects, not responding to on/off on the controller etc..) and have really only used it for demos and watching Spiderman 3 that came with it. (thank god I never paid to see that pos in a theater) The one multi-platform game I tried (NFS Prostreet) looks and runs better on the 360...and I would imagine that will be the case for most multi-platform games.

If you absolutely must get one for the as yet unreleased exclusives.. then I would simply wait and see if the price drops further or bundles get better.

Honestly people like you will never think anything different then what you like, so theres no point in trying to convince you otherwise, even though i wasnt trying to do that anyway. If you're a sony fan you're a sony fan and you're gonna buy the ps3 no matter what like nuerofreeze or stereophile.

To the thread starter though; just look at what games will satisfy you the longest and which system they are most frequent on.

Well over half of the best games are on both consoles. Of what's left, another half of X360's best games are on PC. The top six ranked X360 games are all multi-platform !

At this point, I give the nod to X360 at least in quantity. But it's been out twice as long. IMO there are only about 3-4 games on each exclusive list actually worth a purchase and not just a rental.
I have no doubt by the end of next year the PS3 will have a superior lineup of exclusive games.

You're counting a bunch of games that aren't even out yet. You were looking forward to Lair also, and we all see how that game turned out.
 
Nice list you got there, but when you compare the 2 lists, you can see xbox games are about the same theme, kill this kill that and racing, PS3 has more variety, and something completely different ( PS eye, warhawk )

To the OP, at least the PS3 isn't related to the RROD. Neither is the Wii, so they are both good in my book.
 
A little late to this party but I just wanted to say how happy I've been with my PS3 purchase. I bought a 60gb PS3 back in October and except for a short break to play HL Episode 2 I havent turned on my PC to game at all since I got it. I have it connected to a Samsung 32" LCD in a small'ish room "game" room with a decent stereo setup and its quickly become the entertainment hub of my whole house. My wife and I watch Blu-Ray movies in there almost every weekend while I spend my evenings playing some really great games. The ones I own are:
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Warhawk
Ratchet and Clank Future
Uncharted
Assassin's Creed
Tekken 5 DRO
Everyday Shooter

I would without hesitation recommend any of those games and I would definitely purchase my 60gb PS3 again if I had to do it over.

Converge, you'd have to cut out anything on the 360 that was released during year 2 for the list to be valid.

an extra year really adds a ton more titles
 
Yeah, I would say you should really edit your list Converge. I own both systems and love them both, so don't think I am trying to say the 360 sucks. I actually prefer the 360 by a slight edge for gaming. The PS3 has been getting love lately though.

Anyway, I would think you should really just include exclusives on that list. Cross platform games really aren't important in making a decision whether to buy a system. I think most people will agree that if a game is available on PC, it is almost always better. Also, I personally wouldn't include the sports games that come out in a new version every year. I mean you have '06, '07, and '08 versions of the same game. Is that something that is really going to help make your decision?

I would say the list from Stereophile is actually a pretty good one. Like I said, I would still give the edge to the 360, but the PS3 is now hitting its stride.

I beg to differ on the cross platform not making a difference in which system to get. I have a PS3 and a 360 and every cross platform game I've tried (buddy has only a 360 and brings the same games I have on PS3 over) the 360 either wins hands down (graphics/framerate) or wins simply because the 360 controller is better and has rumble. NFS prostreet is not a great game on any system, but on the PS3 the graphics are washed out and it runs like a slideshow at times...don't even get me started on Madden 08 for the PS3. Thank god for Gamefly that I'm not actually buying these games..
 
PS3 all the way man, you get more for your money. I was in the same boat as you. I picked the PS3 for an entertainment machine mainly, watch hd movies, porn, browse youtube, music server, ect. For $500 you get a Blu-ray player, game machine, media reader and Wifi. 360 is just an unreliable DVD player with a shit load of games (because it has been out longer). Im not a big time 6 hours a day video game player anyways. I almost bought a 360 but didnt like the controller cause its hard to play fighting games on the 360's directional pad, it sucks but thats just me. You also have to pay $170 for an HD player and $100 for a wifi adapter on the 360. With the PS3 I could sync all my media to the PS3 in my living room wirelessly, pretty bad ass when you are having house parties. If you have $$$, buy both, 360 makes a good door stopper. :p

Yeah, I disagree with you there. I generally can tell no difference between the PS3 version and Xbox 360 version of games. I do have my TV settings different on the 2 different HDMI inputs though. With the PS3 I have darker settings and the 360 I have them a little lighter. I may just not have the eye to really tell the difference though, which I am thankful for.

I do think the 360 controller is better though. Feels much better in my hands. It definitely isn't a deal breaker for me as I have played the PS2 for many years. I would definitely recommend either system to anyone who was thinking about getting them.

yes get a ps3, it is the superior console

free online gaming, dedicated servers, no proprietary formats, bluetooth, ability to use any harddrive,webcam,headset,printer,etc you want, tons of great exclusives, cheaper than an xbox360 yet comes with bluray, doesnt break, super quiet, folding and linux capable, wifi, completely customizable, crazy integration with psp,and the list goes on and on

i personally think its one of the best pieces of technology to come out in a long time for such a great price. the power and eject buttons are heat sensored for crying out loud :D

Metacritic is more authoritative than GS. Like others have mentioned, 75% of the games on your list are multi-platform or will be, like Ace Combat 6. They're available on the other consoles or the PC. I see you also put down all the XboxLive games. Too bad you didn't mention all the PSN titles like Super Stardust HD or Flow. ;)

Gotta love the X-Boys.
 
I am a current 360 owner and i'm very happy with it. One of my best friends got a ps 3 a few weeks ago and it is also a great system. I think your decision comes down to what you want to play. I personally wanted to play Halo 3 and Gears of War so I went with the 360. Personally, after playing the PS 3 over the thanksgiving break, i'm kind of wanting one now even though there isn't very many high profile titles yet. My friend and I ** RENTED ** Heavenly Sword and Drake's Fortune, they are two games that are unparalled on consoles as far as graphics and gameplay goes however, they are EXTREMELY SHORT! I wouldn't but either game, but they most certainly show of the potential of the PS 3. I think we'll see the PS 3 take the lead in first party titles in the next two years, there's so much system there to work with, and with better development kits the potential for that system is enormous. I love my 360 and i'm really looking forward to Ninja Gaiden 2 and RE 5. But there is a huge list of PS 3 games I can't wait to play on my buddies PS 3 too. Pick what titles you like, and choose a platform, but if I were buying on preference today, i'd choose PS 3(not to mention built in blu-ray player.)
