Hey guys, I was wondering if it would be possibly for me to temporarily put my PS3's 20 gig hard drive in my dad's newer 80 gig system. I'm staying at my parents for the holidays, and my room is at the other end of the house from the router. I have an older 20 gig system, one of the release models that didn't have wireless, card reader, etc. I wasn't sure if the newer system would force me to format the drive, and that's definitely out of the question. I hope this is possible, I really want the Dead Space 2 demo!

I don't think you can...It will make you reformat the drive once you put it into the other ps3

Hmm... I think you are out luck. Only thing you can do is use a wireless bridge. You can use your laptop as bridge, just share the wireless connection to your ethernet port and connect that to the PS3's ethernet port.

Oh wait, you have a Mac OS X, hmm... don't know if you if that OS supports doing that, I know my Win 7 laptop does.

OS X does support Connection Sharing, but I don't have a Crossover cable here at my parents' house. I guess I'll just have to wait until Christmas for my 360... It's one of the new 250 gig models with wireless. I can hear it calling my name from under the tree right now...

So while on this topic, how exactly would I transfer saves from one PS3 to another?

You can copy all data, including protected save files using the Data Transfer Utility. Even works for Demons Souls. You connect your old PS3 to your new one with an ethernet cable and kick off the transfer.

This formats the new PS3's hard drive and won't work if you want all that data to stay on the old machine as well, but it may help someone like me whose PS3 died and was able to get it up and running again to do the transfer to a new one.

If your MBP has gigabit ethernet it should be fine to use a standard ethernet cable and it will work as a crossover.

Some you can't transfer no matter what you do, like Demon's Souls.

I just had this experience. Had to buy a new PS3 because the hdmi connection on my old one crapped out.

I couldn't do a direct bridge transfer because I needed to move the 500gb hdd in the old ps3 to the new one, and for some stupid reason sony in all its wisdom decided not to allow this.

Instead I tried creating an image of my old hdd but of course no existing saves could be backed up.

the reason you cannot move the hdd from one system to another has to do with a hardware key being generated that only that hdd and the PS3 console that formatted it understand
