If you are a PS3 owner you can now use your console for Folding@Home. There are a bunch of pictures f the PS3 F@H client in action at Kotaku. If you want to fold for the greatest folding team on the planet, on your console or PC, I suggest you hit up our Distributed Computing forum and join Team 33!


Computer Entertainment is teaming up with Stanford University to create a distributed computing network of PS3s to help study the causes of a number of diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis and many cancers.

well we already knew that....Linux install, multimedia capabilites, etc.

Funny to see some over at kotaku crap on it. Is it a reason to spend $600, no. Though it is a nice feature for those who care about such things. Great move, any more help that can go towards F@H is always good.
 
Um, still don't quite get it, can someone explain this to me in detail? This is an interesting thing to try on my PS3 and yes once I know what this is and how to do that I will Post up some pics/results of it.
 
It isn't available yet, should be available on the 23rd.

The simple answer is that the program uses your processor (when not in use), to work on solving highly cpu intensive tasks.

Think of your PS3 as being part of a very powerful, widespread, supercomputer that is running an application that is trying to find cures for diseases.

I assume you will be able to get it via the PS Store, but I could be wrong about that.
 
Sweet, but can't think of any apps that I would need that the F@H will support..

Hey Im just saying! Im not a !!!!!!, as I like the xbox 360 and the wii too.

and Im not / will start a war.
There are stuff that I get reaaaaaally annoyed about the ps3. Where when you do a system update or download a demo you have to wait for it to finish and cant listen to music or browse the web on it. Also the six axis dosen't works that well yet.. and online play Sucks. :/ well I guess the only good thing about ps3 is that it has bluray so far..

Oh ok, thanks :). Yea there are lots more reasons to buy the PS3 instead for just the Folding@Home, but mainly the main reason for a PS3 is the blu ray and other reasons are as I said home entertainment systems, and yea.
 
Mine sits in my equipment closet and when it is on for long periods of time I tend to leave the door ajar. It definitely won't be folding 24-7 at my house.

As far as the nothing to do with it but fold, why all the hate?

If you don't want a PS3 don't buy one but why do you spend your time trashing a game console? Your cycles would be a lot more useful folding than being used to post insightful info like that.

Shouldn't you be off being called a faggot by an 11 year old while playing Gears? ;)

As far as uses for the PS3, I mainly play Tekken, BD movies 2nd (Casino tomorrow night!), Motorstorm 3rd.

Funny thing, I spend the bulk of my time at work, with my family, or watching tv, in that order, playstation is a distant 4th.

In case you couldn't tell, I really like my PS3. I also think the 360 is very nice, and the Wii is tons of fun.

There is a large update coming later this month and and even bigger fall update, background downloading is coming along with custom backgrounds. I haven't had anything but great online play esp. with RFOM. I have had a couple issues with the six axis, but hae not had one in a while and it works like any other controller.

The current lack of titles does suck, but it's not always going to be like that;
Motostrom-Not for everybody, but fun a game
Elder Scrolls-
Virtua Tennis-I loved 1&2
GRAW 2
Rainbow Six
Armored Core 4

Yes I know some of those titles are already out on the 360.
 
what sucks is that graw 2 is coming out later then the 360 version, it better have better graphics then the 360 version or ill be dissapointed. Yea I have the motor storm demo and the graphics is just awesome!!!

Probably won't as most devs. that are doing games for both systems can't really spend the time to optimize for both consoles due to time and cost. There is a pretty big learning curve when coding for the PS3, but having read what the guys working on heavenly sword have say it sounds like it's pretty cool once you get the hang of it.

It does suck having to wait, but hey at least we're getting them.

Yea thats true, maybe in an year they will come out with games as fast as for the 360's. Anyways the trailer looks awesome and gameplay looks like it will be fun too, so yea its worth the wait and im not in a hurry since I mostly game on pc.

Even then more of a computer. Not many console users are a fan of the keyboard, it scares them too much into the reality that they really have a computer now.
 
i think the sony ps3 has been one giant fuckup after another.

but this is one really really good thing. a dvd player, second life, and a charity workhorse all in one.

sounds like things rich people would buy.

but yeah, this is great.
 
I am just trying to wait it out a little longer before I buy a PS3 (in hopes for more games). This is really really really cool though IMO. I am quite stoked about the whole thing. For me it is like a ray of sunshine in the otherwise dark and manipulative Sony world.

I've heard that in around late 2007 or early 2008 that Sony will drop the ps3's price but then they will replace the chip stuff with a crappier one, well at least thats what I heard on [H].
