I know the slim doesn't support PS2 support, which doesn't bother me. I'm not sure about he HDD sizes though. I'm looking to buy one for a Blu-ray player and play probably 2-3 games. I'm probably going to buy a new one, but am looking at used ones too incase the price is right. Should I stay away from any models?
 
Go big with the hard drive, but you can also buy an external that will work just as well, probably for cheaper than a larger PS3 model. The PS3 and the games require updates, and more games now, are installing portions of the game on the unit, so HDD space will disappear before you know it. Especially if you rent games alot.
 
in my area we have used 80gb models for 219 thats a fair bit cheaper then buying new
 
There's really no sku to watch out for with the ps3, just get the model you like most...slim vs non slim, BC vs non bc.

I wouldn't worry about HDD size except for a few reasons. If you plan on downloading a lot of paid/free content from PSN and not delete demo's, then get a big hard drive. If you're like me and you delete game data/psn content your not using anymore, the HDD size doesn't matter, you probably won't use up more than 10-20GB at any given time.
 
I had a 360 with a 20gb for about 2 years and had about 12gb's free. I always delete my demos after and barely play the system as it is. My main reason to get a PS3 would be blu-ray and play Uncharted 2, MGS, and maybe GT5 or 6 (w/e one they are on now lol).
 
Just find a good deal and pop in a bigger hdd. Unlike a 360 you can buy any size laptop sata hdd and instal it without voiding your warranty. The older 80gb models were nice because they had a card reader, backwards compatibility and 4 usb ports. I ended up selling mine and getting a PS3 slim. It's just so much quieter I can barely tell it's on at all. I took out the 120gb and put in a 320gb for all my DLC, music and a few bluray rips.
 
the hdd has to be 9.5mm or less in height at the current time this means that the largest capacity hdd that will fit is a 640GB as all of the 750 and 1TB drives are 12mm in height.
 
You'll be fine with any model. I have the 60gb and have dozens of demos and games played and it is not full. The demos are what take up the most space unless you store media on your ps3. They are demos anyway so most of them are short and not worth a replay so you might have to delete a few once in a blue moon.
 
As a Blu-Ray player it's perfectly fine and seems 'future proof' as long as the hardware is in the machine. It can be a hint annoying to control a disc with the controller, a remote would be better. There's an opportunity for a Christmas gift there.

I would not buy a used PS3, as the 'what if' chance is too high for me. While the PS3 has been more reliable than it's constituents there have been occasional 'mandatory firmware updates' which have 'broken' a few Blu-Ray drives. Myself included. Since a stand-alone player probably wont have the same level of software diligence the chance of that is less. Perhaps even the cost of repair would be less ($149.99 for a PS3). A store protection plan would be cheaper on a standalone unit than a PS3 as well if based on purchase price.
 
Honest opinion, buy the 120GB slim and just swap out the HDD if you truly need more space, there affordable on newegg for the drives, although 120GB isnt easy to fill up! :)

Dont forget to get a blu-ray remote though, dont try using the controller, not easy or fun to do.

Buy new btw on the console! :)
 
Fat or slim? Both $300... (160GB fat that is) Other than the Linux thing on the Fat and new audio stuff on the Slim, is there anything else different? (Well, other than size, weight, and power.)
 
It is $399 tho better off just getting the regular slim and saving the $100
 
Buy a cheap slim, and if you're in need of HD space get a 640GB WD drive.
 
You may not even fill up the 120gig hard drive man.Just get the cheaper one first and if you need more storage later get a bigger hdd
 
I know i am about to get a PS3 myself and I know i wont fill a 120gig HDD
 
I'd get the one with the smallest drive and then plan on upgrading to a larger one.

I went with the 40GB back in the spring of 08 and upgraded to a 320GB around Christmas 09.

I had that 40GB jam-packed when I upgraded... pain in the ass (while at the same time, fun :D) redoing my Rock Band career though.
