PS/2 keyboard via USB socket?

I recently purchased a dance mat (don't laugh) but am apparently unable to use it. The mat only comes with a PS/2 plug, but my computer (a fairly recent laptop) doesn't sport a PS/2 socket. I purchased a PS/2 to USB adapter from eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=45340&item=6744448676&rd=1 but it doesn't appear to be appropriate. When I plug the dance mat in, Windows XP doesn't recognise it (becuase, obviously, it was never intended to be USB-compliant) and says as much.

Is there any way to plug a PS/2 device (such as a keyboard or, more specifically, a dance mat) into a modern computer via the USB socket so it works?

Thanks for any suggestions.

i have dance mats too :)

i ordered the ones ment for a ps (as in play station)

and a playstation to usb adapter and it works awesome.

dont know how to remedy your problem though

You bought the wrong thing. The item you bought simply converts a ps/2 connector to a usb connector; it does not convert a ps/2 signal to a usb signal. It is designed for devices that have both usb and ps/2 signal wires built in, but they are both wired to a ps/2 connector. You need a device that actively converts a ps/2 signal to a usb signal. Those are all over the place and shouldn't cost you more than $15.

Yep, thought that might be the case. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Is there actually any use at all for the device I bought? It seems pretty pointless!

Cheers.

Sorry, ignore that. I just re-read your post and you already explained where this device would be useful. My bad.

Cheers.
