Now, if they can just run a 400 mile length of fiber to Las Vegas for me, I'll quit bitching. ;)

Utah is already home to hundreds of tech companies and startups, and many of them are based in Provo. In fact, the Provo area ranks second in the nation in patent growth, and is consistently ranked as one of the top places to live and do business in the U.S. We believe the future of the Internet will be built on gigabit speeds, and we’re sure the businesses and residents of Provo already have some good ideas for what they’d build with a gig.

I bought the Kansas City decision. I really bought the Austin decision. I can't say the same about Provo.

I'd guess it's because this is a cheap win for Google. They don't have to build the entire fiber network from scratch, since iProvo is an already existing fiber-optic network.

In my opinion, Google should be buying more of these "ready to light" networks.

Good for Provo.

Steve, you live in Vegas? I feel sorry for your ISP options. Coax, Coax and more Coax... some shitty DSL, and more Coax. LMAO.

It's easy to understand. Provo failed miserably trying to be a government ISP. Land owners take the hit for the bad policies and continue to pay the bonds off. Provo politicians save face by selling the city fiber network to google for $1. Google gets a $30 million + jump start on laying fiber. Everyone loves the politicians because google fiber is omg amazing pee my pants!

This. Most definitely this. I mean shit I'll go down to the county commissioners and petition for them.

At least it'll be put to good use in Provo given the more socially normalized population versus the strange people in Kansas or the boondocks of Austin. Google will be able to finally monitor a conventional group of typical people as they download porn and send e-mail to their secret mistresses.

Actually CenturyLink offers Fiber these days, except it sucks. Cox is actually faster and we do have 150MBps service through Cox now although it's god awful expensive.

Ummm are you unaware of the fact that Austin is a huge tech city in the country? And Kansas City was mostly just a proof of concept on a small scale.

Booo!!!! I live in a salt lake like 40 min away, bring fiber here!

Provo's problem was that the folks there are hardcore against government running things - we're talking even for basic utilities. They hired Veracity, a private company, to manage the network, and that company did a bad job at it.

Google should be able to fix these problems since they have better experience. Good fhr folks there, I hope Google will come closer down here some day, Comcast is a disgrace but we're stuck with them in my area sadly.

Living in a rural area on a back country road we always get the cool internet options last :(, hell I didn't even have a choice of broadband until like 2003.

I'd say I'd be lucky to even see Fiber in 2020, if not later.

even thought I live in silicon valley I live in a rural part. consequently, even to this day the best connection I am able to get is a data card. It pains me to read about all these places that get these awesome connections when I am still ecstatic that due to recent network upgrades I am now able to stream youtube. lol

Not really. Government has no business running any business... period. Not even the beloved utilities. They didn't have much choice about Veracity. Either Veracity bought the competition or the competition went out of business on their own. Other ISP's wanted nothing to do with iProvo and for good reason. Veracity is doing a better job than the city did, but the whole thing is far too gone and never should have happened. Veracity has plenty of problems, but they are a private company so they actually have to deal with their bad decisions, which is how it should be. Google is capitalizing on bad government and Provo citizens are stuck with the bill of those bad decisions, aka, the iProvo tax. Sound familiar?

Google please bring this to Holyoke!!! My work Internet is dog slow(30-10).

Come to California already! Mainly Riverside! We have Fiber connections already in the roads all over! We just need the hookup!

Damn AT&T...

Yeah I hooked up the Nevada State Museum with fiber via Cox, to patch back into the State of Nevada Silvernet, but Cox insisted on terminating the fiber with COAX... 5 feet from our rack. That meant bandwidth rated service to Silvernet and more cost. I will never understand that one.

Oh and I can only imagine how much 150Mbs coax costs through Cox. 300meg through Fios is $200/mo.

Yeah but who the hell lives in Riverside that would use it? No companies there to make it worth the hassle.

The government could be just as successful at running a business any one else. In fact it could serve benefits to general population as profits could be sent to the general fund and taxes could be reduced. However, the reason this doesn't work is simply corruption.

Private companies can become just as much a problem due to the corruption thats between private and government. Just ask what few private farmers are left how they feel about Monsanto or even Tyson Chicken.

apparently you've never been to Provo, they are just as weird as the Kansas people. which is why I don't live down there in "happy valley". I live up north away from all those crazy Utah valley people. but with all the tech companies and high standard of living and the great area for recreation (lots of great places in Utah to visit, come on and visit sometime! :D) but we have Utopia in my neck of the woods which is much bigger (tremonton in the north and Payson just south of Prove) that is also like iProvo (government sponsored) which hasn't come to my house yet and I have been paying taxes on it since it's inception. Dang it I want my fiber!

Private monopoly and government monopoly aren't much different. Incentive to compete is no longer there anymore. Capitalism and Communism aren't on the opposite ends of some scale headed away from each other. Pro-monopoly capitalism folds back onto communism. Unfortunately wallstreet loves pro-monopoly capitalism because nothing makes the stockholder happier than being able to gouge customers and next to zero chance of going out of business. And they run the country, so this is what we get.

... screw the rest come to chicago

Why, so it can be one more thing for people to steal there?

Then you have the sad fact that the politicians have been squandering money on things other then the failing infrastructure, so it would probably mean a metric shit ton of money to install it.

That could be because you live in a rural area maybe? By definition it is away from everything ... well except nature, clean air, and awesome open areas.

if they were to come to California they would definitely choose a place in the Bay Area over anywhere in or near riverside.

I am actually surprised they have not chosen a place like Palo Alto as one of their chosen cities.

another reason besides having infrastructure here in utah... Lots of tech companies are opening huge offices here. There's a reason Utah is being called silicon slopes

Ahh, Only a half million in the greater metro area. That's why I've never heard of it :p

Provo butts up against Salt Lake City.

I always thought Provo was a nice place with fairly normal people. I mean, I'm sure it has crazies like any other community, but is it really that bad there?

South Mississippi Google, aka the Landmass between Alabama and Louisiana. Please, oh please, please, please come here. I'm ready to move if it's close enough right meow.

I've never been (and hadn't heard of the place prior to this thread) but just based on location, my impression would be (and granted, it's a stereotype) that a large portion there are the "Mitt Romney" types.

In other words, just a little bit too squeaky clean, clean cut and family values, to really come across as natural, relate-able an trustworthy.

You know the type of people. They are so "normal" and clean cut family guys that something about them just weirds you out, and makes you wonder if they actually aren't an undercover alien in human form or something :p

Unsettling.
