I had a thread before the database outage but it got lost, along with my account lol

Anyway here are the parts I plan to be buying probably in about a week.

Mobo: Abit IP35 Pro - $182.50

CPU: E2160 - $80

I plan to upgrade this December/January to a quad, in the meantime I plan to overclock it.

Heatsink: Tuniq Tower 120 - 46.99

Ram: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 - $84.99

Video: SAPPHIRE Radeon X1950GT 256MB - 114.99

This Video card is just to hold me off till the new G92 cards come out

DVD Drive: LITE-ON LH-20A1L-06 20X SATA+LIGHTSCRIBE - 36.90

OS: WINDOWS VISTA 64BIT HOME PREMIUM - 105.90

The total for everything including tax+shipping comes out to around $715, which is about how much I have to spend.

Parts I already Have:

Case: Antec P182
Power Supply: Corsair HX620
Hard drive: WD 160GB SATA

This PC will be used for gaming @ 1280X1024, but the X1950GT can last me till the new cards come out.

I will also be overclocking which is why I chose the IP35 Pro and the Tuniq Tower, I know the TR Ultra beats it, but I read about some mounting issues on some boards and I dont want to deal with that. The Tuniq should suite me fine, plus its cheaper.

Give me your opinions on this setup.

It looks pretty good to me. I can't argue with any of your choices. I just built a new PC with an Abit IP35 Pro and it was flawless. It's an excellent choice.

I know the cpu is cheap, but if I can overclock it to 3.0 then it will be good. The reason I went with the cheap CPU is because i wanted to get a really good motherboard, that way it last a long time.

The E2160 is a good choice since you plan to upgrade it within months. No point in buying something more expensive just to replace it soon.

PM me when u sell that CPU and vidcard, I may be in the market if the price is right for them. :D

Everything looks good.

It looks good to me considering what you're planning to do with it.

The IP35 Pro is about the same price on zipzoomfly.com but it comes with Free shipping:
Abit IP35 Pro Intel P35 Motherboard - $183

Other than that, looks good to me. Roll with it.

Yeah I plan on ordering most of my parts from MWave because its like a 30min drive to there warehouse, I just have to pay the $5 will call fee and I can pick up my parts the same day I order them.

I have a concern on the Abit IP35 Pro. I read somewhere that the firewire headers are too close to the graphics slot and cannot be used when you use a dual slot card.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Is anyone using a dual slot card, along with the firewire headers connected?

From the looks of it, you should be able to use the bottom one, at the least. Though, I'm sure you could get away with using both still. I have the same issue with one of my boards, but with a USB header... I just bend the individual wires (the portion before the sleeving) enough to not get in the vidcard's cooler's way.

yeah I only need 1 so I should be able to get it to fit then, but if not o well, I still want this board regardless.

Just an update:

I decided to go with some different choices so here is what I came out with:

Antec P182
Corsair HX620
2GB Crucial DDR2 800
Abit IP35 (Regular)
E4400
Tuniq Tower 120
Lite-On SATA Burner
WD 160GB HD
BFG 7900GSOC (Bought of a forum member, will have it tomorrow)
Vista Home Premium 64-Bit

Here are some pics of the complete system minus the video card which I will have tomorrow.

So far I am happy with the wiring job I did.

I could probably put the other HD Rack in and cover all those wires but I think its fine for now.

The bottom PS area isnt too cramped and the fan isnt really being blocked at all

Here is a pic of the back where all the wires are, Im glad I went with the P182

I will update more tomorrow when I get is all up and running.

Man, I really do need to clean up my cables. And buy an SATA DVD drive.

Nice work!

Well I got the video card in and the system booted right up with no problems, it does have the double boot issue, but it doesnt really bother me.

Right now im installing vista, the system seems stable, I checked the temps in the bios and they are good, im very happy so far.

Also: Damn this case is very quiet, I have the two back fans on low, the other fans on med, and the tuniq going full blast and I still can barely hear it.

I'd strongly recommend buying 4-5 $3 Yate Loons to replace the TriCools. Many people see them die quickly and I felt they didn't move much air at all on low or medium and were way too loud on high.

I think I'm having problems with the Tuniq Tower.

I have the E4400 overclocked to 3.0 just by raising the FSB and im running orthos and the temp using speedfan and abitEQ are reading 57-60 Deg C, and this is with the Tuniq Full blast.

I already took the heatsink off and re-applied the thermal paste once and it looks like it had little affect. I used the paste that came with the Tuniq Tower.

But these temps seem high, the temps for idle are around 30-33 Deg C.

Im not sure whats wrong.

Are you sure that you installed the Tuniq correctly? Use Core Temp and see if it agrees with SpeedFan. How much thermal paste did you use? Did you follow the instructions from Arctic Silver on how to apply thermal paste on C2D CPUs?

Also, up the speed of all your case fans and see if there's a difference.

Those temps are similar to what I experienced with my E4300 @ 3Ghz and Tuniq.

I followed the instructions for the Tuniq and its tightened down properly.

Coretemp is reporting a way higher temp about 11-13 deg higher

I just spread the paste very lightly over the whole cpu.

Well according to those instructions I did it wrong, which could be what the problem is.

Another problem I think is that after I put the paste on the go to set the Tuniq down, I try to align it the best I can with the mounting whole, but the thing still has to put slid around to mount up, and I think thats messing up the paste.

With all the fans on high, it lowered the temps my 2-3 Deg.

If the slides are small, they shouldn't matter. Even the instructions say to twist the HS once in each direction.

Did you say that you had similar temps with an E4300 and a Tuniq.

Do the E4300 and E4400 just run hot, I mean I don't want to burn it up.

I haven't tested it for very long, about 30min, but no errors, or crashes, the system seems stable, but I just dont like these temps, I see people getting temps under 50 load with quads.

Yup. Its all luck of the draw man. No OC/Temp is guaranteed. My E4300 was orthos stable for 32 hours with similar temps as your E4400. Non-OC'd temps were around 20°C idle and I think 45°C during load. If your chip's VID is high, chances are, the chip will run rather hot.

I might go and pick up some AS5 tomorrow and apply it per their instructions, cause im sure the AS5 is better than the Tuniq paste anyway.

The main question is are these temps safe, I never saw it go over 60 max, but it wasn't running for very long.

At 3GHz and 1.425V setting from bios (1.360V from CPUZ), I get 72C after 30 minutes of ORTHOS.

Going off-topic a little...My E4300 won't run stable at 3.2GHz except at 1.5V, so buying a new hsf won't allow for a better overclock. I also never approach 72C during daily usage, so I'm fine with the stock hsf.

Well I redid everything with the arctic silver 5 and I followed there instrcutions.

From the looks of it, it didnt change very much.

AbitEQ: 56-58
SpeedFan: 56-58
Coretemp: 71-73

I guess this cpu is just hot.

With the vcore at stock, the cpu at 3.0.

I have orthos running and it looks like speedfan only gets up to a max temp of 55-56

The instructions for the arctic silver said in needs to break in for like 200 hours, and after that it could end up like 5 degrees cooler.

I played BF2 for about an hour earlier, it didn't crash or anything so that must be a good sign.

My E6750 OC'd to 3.8Ghz with 1.55v runs cooler than my E4300 OC'd to 3Ghz with 1.4v. My E6750 idles at 26°C and reaches 52°C during load. I'm using the same setup as I was with my E4300 that had similar temps to your E4400 at the same speed. The only difference is I tried the AC MX-2 thermal paste instead of AS5. I'll throw some AS5 on there and see how the temps differ when I get a chance (probably this weekend; I'll try both pastes on both CPUs, but with the same Tuniq Tower).

Well with my room around 25C

E4400 @ 3.0 Stock Vcore
Tuniq Tower on High

Running Orthos:
Speed Fan: 47-48
Coretemp: 60-62

Which temperature is right, and whats the highest safest temp it should be, because earlier when my room was hotter coretemp was reporting 71-72 while running orthos.

Coretemp is right. You're fine below around 65C. Spikes above that are alright and chances are you won't get near Orthos temps with normal usage, even gaming.

Ok, I wont even bother to use speedfan then.

Ive been playing BF2 and FarCry all day today a couple hours at a time, and I havent had any crashes or errors.

Im just still kinda concerned about the temp though.

Also, in Coretemp should the Tjunction be 100 or 85.

Well after reading around alot what im getting is that

Core2Duo: 85 Tjunction
Quad: 100 Tjunction

The new version of coretemp(0.95) has a Tjunction of 100.
But speedfan, is exactly 15C lower than coretemp so it must have a Tjunction of 85.

So if you have a quad you need to use coretemp or offset the temps in speedfan by +15C
If you have a Core2Duo, then you use speedfan, or an oler version of coretemp, I believe (0.94) because that version had a Tjunction of 85.

I dont know if any of this is correct but its just what im finding in google.

Going by what you said, that would put my idle temp at 10°C, lol.

I didnt have time to swap pastes this weekend... I'll do it when I find some time, lol.
