Project: Windows Homeless Server

DOMINOZ, Could you take some pics of the top of the Antec Nine hundred? Thinking of buying that case for water cooling, and putting a radiator on top.

There really is no case solution for you with that budget and that many drives. Sure looks like your cart is starting to take shape.... it would drive me nuts :)

can of compresses air upside down? it blows out cold air, but it may evaporate too fast

The Lian-Li PC-343 holds atleast 30 drives without mounting additional ones on the inside, right?

When you factor in the brackets and such, your looking at over $400 including shipping. OP didn't want to spend more than 400 bucks for a home for all his drives.

A 343 would be as close as you can get, unless if you want to start bolting stackers together.

She's got the drive cages already, atleast it looks like the silverstone ones, don't know if they'll work, what else is the 343 missing? Just wondering, I've been thinking of getting one.

Wow...so many responses in such a short time...you guys just get off work or something?

I had thought about the Lian Li cube case as well. I guess I just wanted to be able to fit more than 30 drives. My plan for this server is to eventually house 48 drives in RAID 6 arrays...maybe 3 separate arrays or two large ones. Then there will be two more dives as the System drives up top. I also wanted to do it as cheap as I could without sacrificing too much. That is why I went with the cheap-O drive bays (like 18 bucks each) and the 'metro' shelving unit (was about 35 bucks at Lowes). And that shelving unit is so sturdy...I will not have to worry about weight. The fact that I could put it up off the floor, on nice big wheels was a good bonus as well.

I am actually looking forward to getting the acrylic enclosure put together...only thing is it means dealing with my EX and he is a bit creepy...lol. I have never built anything from scratch and this seemed like a good opportunity. I has looked into getting the same server case as Ockie but it was just too expensive and would have meant I would have had to wait even longer to get as many drives as I needed to start out. But, that is one sweet case...if anything comes up that makes me a nice chunk of money...I would consider it.

On a side note...kinda,
The old server is still working flawlessly and has all 12 RAID drives (500GB) still hooked up plus one 250GB system drive. I might want to sell it now that the new server is taking over the duties...I will post pics and specs in a new thread in that section. The RAID cards in it are nothing fancy though...they just get the job done. It has 3 separate cards...each with 4 drives on it...in RAID 5. Anyway...I will post more in the appropriate section.

Thank you guys again for all the feedback. I will most likely be installing WinXP this weekend as long as I can be sure that the RAID array will work on a new OS...with the data still intact.

P.S.

I realize that I am only using two 750Watt PSUs. When I had just one hooked up it was able to power 16 750GB hard drives plus 2 320GB hard drives and the MOBO and the 6 fans. This was not an issue...seemed fine. Can I assume that the other 750Watt PSU should be able to power the remaining drives and fans? There might be as many as 32 drives and 8-10 fans hooked up to it...and that would be it.

The RAID array will easily be recognized if you switch operating systems. I went from XP to Server 2003 without issues.

QFT, the only thing keeping the array from showing up immediately after installing is lack of drivers....... as soon as the RAID card drivers are installed, the array will once again be visible...... just like on a mobo RAID array.... think of it as built-in insurance against accidently messing up the array by picking an incorrect install partition............even if you swapped the RAID card to a different mobo, the RAID bios is on the card so upon installing the drivers, the array would be visible once again......... if you installed a Linux distro and you installed the drivers for the card, the data on the array would be visible...............

If CM still had refurb'd 810s for 55 bucks, it'd be worth it IMO.

this is great build up, as for cased options are kinda slim, i have a addtronics 12u server chassis and i think with out modification it will fit easy 30-35 drives, thats with 5 4in3 modules, the 2 interanl 3 drive racks, the 3.5 floppy drive tray filled (3 drives) and the 2 rear mounted ones.

my rig, tho some of the pictures are gone now, but it will give u an idea to its size and capacity,

modified i can see this chassis easily holding 40+ drives be wary tho is all heavy grade steel

oh and btw you can get it for $150 shipped off ebay

So friggin sorry for abandoning this thread. I had emergencies that needed to be dealt with. Long story short...don't have a psycho for an EX and ask him favors.

The server is going strong...have Vista installed of all things. One issue though, being that the MOBO is sever class...seems like it will not WAKE from LAN or anything...maybe that's by design...but it sucks. The old server would do it...be all snug asleep and from my HTPC I ask for a movie located on the server...and BAM! the server would awake and boot and feed my HTPC the file. Grr...thems was the good old days. After the movie finished playing...about five minutes later the server would drift back to sleep...so nice.

The server is about 20 Harddrives strong and I am actually running low on space these days. All drives are 750GB and I am thinking I will get another batch of 3 or so soon. The card holds 24 so that's great. I STILL have not enclosed it in anything...it is just sitting there on the METRO shelves. I kinda like it that way though...but I am sure it would drive a few of you NUTZ!

I plan on taking it out this weekend and cleaning and dusting everything...just to see how nasty it has gotten in the past few months. I will snap some pics then and post a small update here. Also...I was thinking MAYBE of getting TERABYTE drives now...instead of the 750's and plugging them into the card. I think I would have to separate them on their own array now though...they prolly won't play nice with the 750's on the raid 6 array. I can get 5 or 6 of them and see what's what. Should just get another card I guess...hmm.

Anyway...again, sorry for the long post and the even longer hiatus. See ya!
