Well ive decide to go all out on my first mod. Although the Stacker as standard is one ugly case, im sure with some hard work, sweat and lots of swearing it can be made beautiful. I have a basic idea of what im going to do but as I like to be spontaneous I have not made any detailed plans. The basic contents of my system will be:

DFI Lanparty SLI-DR
Athlon 64 3500
1gb corsair xms pro
2 x 74gb WD Raptors
1 x 120gb seagate HD
Gainward golden sample 6800 ultra
Creative X-FI Fatal1ty FPS soundcard
Plextor slot loading dvd-rw
X-connect 500 watt psu
Matrix orbital PLED screen

Dangerden TDX CPU BLOCK
Dangerden Maze 4 Chipset Block
Danger Den NV68 GPU Block
D5 Pump with chrome Kit
Thermochill 120.3 rad
1/2 tygon + Zerex

And here we have the prep for my first cut, im sure you know what a stacker looks like already. If not theres this search engine called goo....... you get the idea.....

so why have I cut a large oval hole in the top of a £120 case I hear you cry?

Sorry Coolmeister but I stole an idea from you, enter the RS Turbo Bonnet Vent!

Well actually its a cheap one which I had to cut the vents out of hence the bondo repair work, but im sure it will have the desired effect.

And here we have the result of using some ISOPON (like bondo only much easier to sand) to smooth the edges of the bonnet vent.

Nice, I want to see how this turns out.

On a totally unrelated note, I have to kill you. Your name is to much like mine.

I guess similar names are rampant on this board! I outrank you both! HAHAHA!

Bondo work looks good, I've always wanted to try it.

Nope, I have way more posts than you. Pwned.

Nope, it's by rank. you know, what rank you are. post wise. Anyways, wheres an update already?

Well names aside, ive made a bit more progress with my mod

Here we have the blue plastc domed piece from the stacker before and after:

So why have I cut a hole in this lovely piece of plastic? well to I have filled the plastic with filler like so:

And then Ive glued it all back on and used Isopon to smooth out all the hard lines. This has now left me with a perfectly smooth surface to be painted.

Notice the two holes which will eventually contain these red and blue Bulgin Switches for power and reset:

You may be wondering what the black piece of plastic is that is slotted in the front (or not as the case may be)

Well Ive decided to put an perspex window in like so:

which contains a Knightlight! This gives me the cool effect from KIT in Knight Rider.

I wanna black out the perspex so it fits in a bit better with rest of the case, any ideas?

sorry for the lack of updates, have been really busy with work and with this little terror

Have actually got quite a bit done today so will be posting some pics this evening including my motorised fingerprint scanner!

who hates kids? sadistic psychos? Yea, i think so... who can hate the cute little bundles of joy that can't control their own bowel movements?

Check auto parts stores for spray on tint products or window tinting film. A tint shop may even have a few scraps of tint laying around. In the U.S. a can of the spray will go for about $7.00

cheers mate, the spray sounds like a solution. If u hate kids then you obviously you havent had your own, coz through all the crap and nappies and sick they are one of the few people in this world who love you without question and only want your attention in return. having said that my digi cam has a layer of dribble which has seeped into the battery compartment, so no update until its dried out in the morning, kids.......

Thanks for the new CS:S spray :p

And subscribed for worklog!

LOL, cheers! Just doing a bit of sanding, will be posting major update in an hour or so........

Hmmmmm
Seems my Stacker is falling behind the coolness curve!
I will have to take notes from this cool mod!

*Majin steals ideas!* :D

Finally found some time do do a few updates, first off I had a brainwave, rather than just have my Microsoft Fingerprint Reader sitting on the desk I decided to mod it into a motorised tray.

Let me just say im no electronics wizard, I dont know how servos etc work and dont have time to learn (although i will eventually).

I decided to butcher an old cd-rw drive and use the cd-rom tray as the base for the finger print scanner. All i did was remove the laser and just left the controller board in the bottom so I can still use eject button, incidentally I found 4 silcone grommets that are perfect for mounting drives inside the cd-rw, much better than the ones you buy.

I then used The piece of mesh from the bottom of the stacker to make the shape I needed
as was a perfect fit

and after a bit of bondo work:

just need to smooth hole out fill in cracks and paint now, when its done il post a smalll vid

i wanna add a motion detector switch so when I wave my hand the tray opens. Was gonna use an LDR but tray would open at night. Any ideas?

Well i got bored of doing my case today so I decided to make use of my 6800 graphics card, a casualty of overclocking! I decided that the GPU would be my new case badge, a £180 case badge at that.

(that core really is shiny, my shoddy camera skills really don't do it justice)

................ :( x 10

but cool badge though :D

I actually claimed on the insurance (dont ya love accidental damage cover?) and got myself a shiny new Gainward 6800 ultra so its not really a sad story....

I want to light the badge up some how, but am having a mental block on how best to do this. I thought of drilling a couple of holes in each corner and threading EL wire round the GPU but dont think that will look right. So.... Im toying with using a couple of LEDs sunk into the case, acting as a downlighter (is that a word?). any other suggestions would be appreciated

A- How does Accidental Damage cover overclocking? I thought OCing voided any warranty.

B- Give about a 1/16" space surrounding the "case badge" and put frosted plexi behind the "case badge." Then put a green LED or two behind the frosted plexi. THat'll work for backlighting. As far as in front, somehow drill a hole on the case bezel/door, where a LED would fit, I'd say a white LED. Stick it in there and then it could glow like the flashlight under the chin effect.

Hope that helped...

Lol. The joys of fully comprehensive contents insurance. I overclocked, the card broke, it was accidental...... Well I may have left out some of the facts...... But was still accidental and thats the story im sticking too.

Yeah I get what you mean and thats pretty much what I wanted to do.Cheers for the backlight idea, will just need to tidy the edges of the GPU and try to remove the pcb from the back without damaging the core. What I might do is sink the GPU into a thick piece of UV acrylic so it has a glowing border. Will prob do both and post pics so you guys can give me your opinion.

Have also started on my front panel, pics to follow.

well heres the front panel so far, this will include the above mentioned case badge, the PLED lcd and the fingerprint scanner.

Basicly all I did was use solvent cement to bond the drive bay inserts together. I then removed most of the clips to allow easy removal. I then taped the holes in the bay inserts from the back and used Isopon (Bondo for my american friends) to make a smooth finish. Once this was dry I used a chisel and knife to cut away all the rough edges and have so far spent an hour sanding.

What I failed to notice was that when the panel was drying the glue caused it to bend slightly in the middle so will have to use some more filler to even it out. Its a good job this case will rarely be moved. At this rate its gonna weigh more than me!
