Project: PrometheusCu

@Geo Fry - Thanks a lot man... I felt just like you described when I started, but reseasrch (a lot of research) has helped me through.

@Uberbob102000 - Many thanks! Luckily time is something I have right now... but due to the complexity of this project money will be the issue holding me back from taking it even fruther.

@WildWilly - Thanks mate. I actually dont even have a credit card, I saved my pennies for over a year to start this build. And since then I've had to do a few extra contract design projects on the side just to keep the funds rolling. My my math, With the most recent purchases and orders I've made for this project, the epic figure of $9000 was broken only 2-days ago.

In case anyone is still a bit confused as to my plans for the Pico I'll outline it below:The 40.2mm radiator will be cooled by 2 of the cool air intake 40mm fans mounted in the front panel/drivebay.The stock Pico-ITX heatsink has had a flat spot milled into it to allow me to afix the CoolerMaster Aquagate pump/block to it.I asked xtreme0915 to send me some pics of the aquagates pump/waterblock, hopefully this will fill in the blanks:

@preyed - Thanks man.

Another parts update:

My parcel from SparkFun arrived this morning. As did my box from AquaComputer, only I won't be able to pick it up from the post office until later this evening.

So-far we have:
The BlinkM RGB LEDs

The Female serial plug that will allow me to convert the USB>Serial adapter from Male to Female.
prometheus-serial01.jpg

I'll have my AquaComputer stuff tonight, so tune in then.

Thanks for reading.

@fluke420 - I thought the exact same thing when I noticed it.

Again many many thanks to my sponsor AquaComputer for generously providing the following:

For those of you who aren't aware of the power of the AquaComputer components. here is a small demonstration video showing the power of the AquaComputer system (aquaero display, aquastream pump, multiswitch, tubemeter water level sensor, aquasuite software).

Here you will find AquaCopmuter's explanation of the AquaComputer automated "monitoring" hardware.

Aquaero 4.00:

And the center pieces of the system... PrometheusCU Edition G200 waterblocks. Aquacomputer was generous enough to build two of these fore this project. (Note that the Prometheus text appears 'burnt' in the images but this doesn't show up to the naked eye)

More assembly to come soon.

Thanks for reading!

@[H]utch - Thanks man, my thoughts exactly... the look and performance of their products was the key reason in my sponsorship inquiry.

@cornelious0_0 - Thanks very much, you and me both.

@fluke420 - I must agree, AquaComputer did a wonderful job. The pictures don't do it justice either, it's a beautiful piece.

@lowteckh - Thanks for reading, there's much to come still.

UPDATE:
The CoolerMaster Aquagate Duo generously donated by xtreme0915 of the SliZone forums has arrived today!

I will be using the Aquagate's clever little waterblock/pump assembly to cool the pico board.
prometheus-picowc4.jpg

prometheus-picowc5.jpg

Here is how the waterblock will be mounted to the Pico-ITX board. Note that I've yet to construct a proper bracket for mounting.

prometheus-picowc7.jpg

Here is a pic of the board next to the rad that will be cooling it.
prometheus-picowc8.jpg

Here's a quick glimpse of my desk right now, it's been sitting like this for about a month... I really need to pick up the pace.

Small news update:

I've been honored with the privilege of having PrometheusCU showcased on the front page of TheBestCaseScenario!

Only when athletes break records people see that it is humanly possible to reach those limits. They then start to believe and prove themselves that they can do it but it takes that 1 person to go above and beyond....

Langer, one of our newer members, showed us that you can not only make a killer rig with a stellar watercooling layout...but make even the smallest of electronics watercooled! Langer showed us what it takes to water cool a PICO-ITX board and do it with style. He deserves rep for this one folks. This is watercooled engineering at it's finest.

Go check it out and have your jawdrop. It's worth the looksie.

innovative ideas with that itx board, and aquacomputer is indeed prime cooling gear, goodluck for the boot:)

That's just AMAZING! I have never seen such a beautiful build before. You are now officially my role model. (You're the first) :)

@itsukisama - Thanks man, I really hope so. ;)

@shawnol - Thanks for the kind words, aquacomputer's stuff is straight class.

@Runedrune - Thank you very much, I'm honored to have inspired you so. Thanks for the props as well.

what's the deal with component and retailers sponsoring worklogs?

I saw a petra's sponsored worklog the other day too... just curious....

looks nice (and loud)

@Runedrune - I have more mod plans but no more Prometheus iterations... the AU model does have some appeal though.

@malicious - I emailed AquaComputer in hopes that they would donate hardware in exchange for advertisement/publicity. Mips has also sponsored the project but the hardware hasn't yet arrived. I'm hoping to get corsair on board, so that I can get some dominator ram w/o heatsinks. I'm not sure about the loud comment, visually loud yes but acoustically it wont be very loud at all. Thanks for the comment.

i just saw all those 40mm fans so i thought it would be loud no?

damn all you have to do is ask suppliers for stuff and they send it to you...

who knew?

@malicious - The 40mm fans are Scythe MiniKazes, they are practically silent. I had to check the connections when I tested them to see if they were on. As for 'just asking' you need to have the product to show for it, a reputation of past mods, and an outline on how you can help them though exposure.

EG: I modded my eeePC before it was cool. With 16 additions.
and I've put the Prometheus log on many sites (according to Photobucket, I'm getting ~500,000monthly image views):
Bit-Tech.net
SLi Zone
The Mod Nation
[H]ard Forum
The Best Case Scenario
Xtreme Systems
The Mod Nation
Mod The Box

I'd suggest taking a look at Bit-Tech's guide to sponsorship:
Hitchhiker's guide to Mod Sponsorship

My machinist (who is doing all my work for free BTW) called me today declaring that he will work though the night if necessary, I'll have the prototype parts cut tomorrow. It's been a crazy time for him and I can't really hold anything against him considering the predicament, also he just moved his shop to a new building at the beginning of Sept.

I have a new dilemma however.

Corsair has been kind enough to provide 8GB(4x2gb) of Dominator 1066mhz RAM with no heat spreaders attached, only they've expressed a little caveat which has me thinking.

With these MIPS Computer GmbH has been very kind and has sponsored me with a RAM Freezer 4 memory waterblock:
mips_nickel.jpg

However since Dominator ram has additional PCB height to aid in heat dissipation:
dominator_measurements.jpg

I'm concerned that the Dominator RAM may not work with the RAM Freezer 4.

Of course I could ask Corsair to provide a RAM from the XPS series that does not have the extra height, but I'm waiting for MIPS Computer to get back to me with measurement specifications.

I've also taken delivery of a couple other aesthetic items this week, I'll have pics up tomorrow or early weekend.

Thanks for reading... and waiting... see you all soon.

Okay, I frankly gotta say that this mod will be the best I've ever seen in my entire life.

I've been inspired by alot of mods from different forums, but this gives me the motivation to spend hundreds of dollars to mod another computer even if I just completed a project.

Wow.

Keep it up man, your work is incredible. This mod is to computers what the egyptian's pyramids are to human construction.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm so amazed by the scope of this, I've always wanted to incorporate my router stuff into my machine, but you're just... you're just doing it so perfectly...

Amazing, just amazing.

Thanks for sharing this with all of us, it's not that often one gets to see all the underpinnings of a project as huge as this. It makes me sad how many don't see the light of day.

Optional87 - Thanks a tonne man, that's really kind of you. I can say with 100% confidence that this project will see the light of day come hell or high-water. The absolute latest that I will have it complete is the release day of Fallout 3 - being one of the biggest fans of the series out there.

SoAndSo -

Sorry for the delays folks, but my metal is still not cut (don't get me started... I'm pissed) and until it's installed I cant really do a whole lot else.

I decided to try my hand at fabricating panels from my fabric. These were soaked in resin and pressed at an obscene pressure of several thousand tonnes.
prometheus-carbontest01.jpg

You don't get this look from carbon decal!

prometheus-carbontest03.jpg

prometheus-carbontest04.jpg

The next one is the closest thing to a definition of "indestructible" as you'll ever find. I don't know how many layers there are in this - but it's about a 1/2" thick. It will be used for a few structural components.
prometheus-carbontest201.jpg

prometheus-carbontest202.jpg

I've also got a few yards of copper mesh, I have a few plans for this stuff it looks really cool when wrapped tightly around wires and cables.
prometheus-coppermesh01.jpg

prometheus-coppermesh02.jpg

Another generous donated product courtesy of Mach over at TheBestCaseScanario's forums. Some braided copper sleeve.
prometheus-coppersleeve01.jpg

Lastly we've got 100' of 18gage copper flat wire to be wrapped around the black tubing for aesthetic reasons.
prometheus-copperwire01.jpg

prometheus-copperwire02.jpg

Also the metallic copper paint I ordered on July 27th is still not even shipped yet which is holding up some of my smaller mods.

I'm just playing the waiting game from now until when my metal is cut. I've done a few little things like lapping my GPU's and CPU, other than that noting big.

nice mesh.. i saw some of that at hobby lobby the other day and thought about using some of it too

@malicious - You should use it, it's pretty looking stuff.

@tom61 - Thanks mate.

@SoAndSo - Many thanks sir. Tune in for more soon.

Gah, i'm going nuts over here, must see this finished soon or i may just die. lol.

gl, amazing project, subbed.

You were not lying when you said you were going to pack this thing full im liking how this is turning out so far

@Beakerz - So you know how I feel. I wanted to be done a couple weeks ago.

@Beakerz - Thanks man, but just wait... there's so much more in store.

Really liking your work so far, langer! It must be great to have access to all those supplies and equipment. I saw you said on bit-tech you spent almost 10k so far !! wish I had that much to spend on my project ;)

Keep up the good work bro!

This mod is just ridiculous. (As in, it's so sick/badass/awesome etc...it's RIDICULOUS.) :D

I wish I had 1/100th of your ability and patience. ;)
