Project: Phoenix 1.0

Ok so in the mail today I got my Slim DVD drive....however its got some unknown to myself some connector.
The website said it was IDE
Its not slim SATA.
Its a rectangular connector. On the inside of the connector there is 25 pin/contact points on the top and bottom of the rectangle connector.
Here are some pics.

This as close as I could get without it being fuzzy

Does anybody know what this is?
What do I need?
WTF how could that be mistaken for IDE...i mean its not even the same pin count.

It is a laptop IDE connection, they do not use the same connection as a 3.5" or 2.5" hd, you need one one these: http://www.directron.com/cddvdadapter.html

gjvrieze is correct. I ordered mine a few days ago, actually that exact same item from directron and it should be here on Wednesday. At least they are cheap.

cool just ordered mine...I love Directron, I usually get the stuff the next day.

What type of rack are you putting the case in?

Well I dont have one ATM, Right now ive got my switch, router, modem just stacked on an extra end table that I put in the extra bedroom in my house.

I'm going to be building my own...I was thinking of something like this.

Cool. Ive got a 42U 2 post rack that works well for switches, but I might look into something like that as well for the servers.

LittleMe did you ever get repositorium started?

Yes, I've got a worklog for it going as well. LOL, you should go find it and read about my Intel NIC card fun on friday. Side note, my motherboard showed up today, pics coming later when I get off work.

SO I just had some fireworks like LittleMe in my case this afternoon.
I put the CPU in.
And Fired it up..literally
When I pressed the power button I had flames emitting from some chip and some circuits by the NorthBridge. IDK WTF happened, So I called Supermicro and they sent me an email and I have to fill out what happened etc. Then they will determine if I can RMA it.
Anyways heres the pics.

WTF is with these server builds, there catching on fire.

I have no Idea what could have caused this. The memory, cpu, nics, raid card are all fine....I guess my PSU could be faulty but I have know way of knowing, as I dont have another board laying around...even if I did im not sure i can handle another F* up today.

Was just thinking how funny it would have been if my NIC Sparkler was in your board. Would have been complete chaos.

LOL

So I called supermicro and they said that I can RMA for repair but since they sold it to their distributor more than 1 year ago its not under warranty. So im pretty F*d on this.

Return the board to the store you bought it from.

That's shitty luck man, Hopefully you can get a refund or replacement on that thing.

This blows, I have been pretty lucky with server parts, on the other hand, I have awful luck with normal desktop parts, using mobos....

Man I just cant beleive me and Littleme both had fireworks. ***mine were more like flames***

I am scared, I have been racking my gear for most of my free time to day, got a ton of wiring to do (that is fine) it is the working over running servers that is bugging me, too easy to wreck something or trip over something, let alone fireworks!!!

LOL, I had flames but it was a lot of sparks shooting all over the place. Oh, and tons of smoke. The burn spot on the card is probably no more than 1" wide by 3" long but there was sooooo much (magic)smoke.

Man... That hurts, I've had a motherboard do this before when the pins to a fan controller were shorted. The reason I bring that up is that burn is really close to the CPU fan plug.

Thats why you should bolt down your rack or use anti-tip feet :)

oh cool project.

it's weird, my roommate and i run a server at school called PhoenixHD, where we keep all of our movies and stuff. it's not as clutch as yours though, but it's great at playing HD movies. actually we just ordered 4 new 1TB drives today for the next raid5.

Cool d00d where do yall go to school?

Ok well Ive talked to the company that i bought it from and they are saying that they have no way knowing that i set it up right....i talked to the tech and told him everything that I was using and he said they would talk it over with the manager and call supermicro to see what the deal is. However im impatient and have bought a Asus P5M2/SAS board from our good friend gjvrieze. I figure since i will have another board it will give me an excuse to build something else cool.

stevens in jersey

originally we ran a server under a different name, different hardware. and then one day it finally kicked the bucket so we decided to revive the harddrives in a different computer and call it Phoenix. it's been revived a few times now and currently exists in a small HTPC case with a sata hot swappable external drive bay.

Well I have determined that my PSU is not the culprit....my buddy has one of the PSU testers and we pluged it up and all the lights were green. So WTF supermicro??? I thought yall made quality boards....jk..they are always good just not that one.

Even good hens lay bad eggs sometimes. So get a new egg!! Hahaha... I kill me. Hey, put down the knife, ok? ;)

For what it is worth, I really do not think it is your PSU, but I have had bad ones test good on the PSU testers at work.....

I dont think its my PSU either...but testing it makes me feel better at least.

Ok well I got the ASUS P5M2/SAS today in the mail from gjvrieze...BTW the only thing that sucks about this board is that it doesn't have dual cpu slots. I plugged it all up before i put it in the case and it works great.
NO FIRES!!!!!!!!

Ill get some pics up soon.

Nice, were you able to RMA or return the other board?

Yes, the company that i bought from said they would do a full refund because they did not have anymore of that model.

Personally I like this board more than the other one... this has onboard miniSAS adapter and supports up to 8 drives on an LSI1068e chip. Ill probably add my SAS drives to this from my workstation when I upgrade it to SSD's

Man I forgot how many times Windows Home server restarts during an install......Im surprised at how quiet this box is with all the fans running...its also running remarkably cool.

Sweet, glad you got it today, your ahead of me, I am still waiting on an order of 1ft jumper network cables, God dang it!!!

It is one hell of a nice board, I am very happy with the uptime I got off of it, pretty much, boot it up and walk away (for ever!!)
I thought the speeds in raid on the LSI were a little low (like 200MBps read on 4 raptors in raid 0), but JBODs were great, and I did not test the SAS ports much, I had Raptors on them for about a week, never actually used it for anything but a benchmark..... (bare in mind, I am also used to an Areca 1280ML!!)

BTW, I hope you read the manual (a very good one too) I did not reset the fan dip switches before shipping it, there is cool control modes and whatnot (my other Asus board has this as well)

Sorry about the wait...my camera got F8d up I dropped in the lake...ill have an update tomorow fo show!!!
