[Project] Interior Des(k)ign - SR-2 inside

nice job on the pcdesk. Also I am interested in the In the little blue car you have there in the garage (looks kinda like Volkswagen or Porsche) Pics please :)

If I had to guess a karmann ghia :)

Its a drag spec Karmann Ghia yep! I will try to put a few photos up soon, as there have been a few comments on it! Glad you like them both mate!

A little more progress today, although its not very orderly as Im doing the final few jobs really befor paint. I fitted the IO panel, but have run out of gas for the welder and cannot get any until Friday so had to resort to just getting the prep done, which was frustrating.

Here's what I managed to get completed today then, bear with me!

First up I carefully dropped the motherboard of all motherboards into the gap it will live in soon, so that I could measure the IO panels placement correctly... After a little fiddling I marked it up on the backplate

51947e3e.jpg

Marked up

a0ae086c.jpg

Then I set about the rear panel with mi trusty plasma cutter, steadily cutting the required shape out...

263f840a.jpg

9f75a3ac.jpg

After a little work with the file to smoothe the edges nicely, it looked like this...

dce7b7a8.jpg

Once welded it will be part of the rear panel rather than being screwed/rivetted on, ie seamless, which is the look I wanted.

9f234c8f.jpg

Its held in here with masking tape, as I said before, Im out of 'Cougar' for the welder, so friday evening this will be getting welded in proper.

To speed things up, I prepped the side panels for paint a while ago, so today since I was limited for time, I wiped them down with a bit of de-greaser aka IPA, and a tak-cloth and put the first coat of etch primer on. Its gone on well, thin coats with a minute or two in between, no runs, no sags and even! Perfect! Next is the top coats!

And the other side...

d5a71efc.jpg

And finally, one glory shot, had to put this on just to give you all an idea of the final overall
look im going for... Hope you like it...

Is metal working hard to pick up? I took woodshop in HS, and I enjoy it, but it sure would be cool to be able to metal work like this.

Looks awesome and would love to try a custom build like this someday

Its reasonably difficult yes, working with sheet steel isnt too bad as it folds etc easily, but welding it is quite hard as you need to know how much current it'll take before blowing holes through etc. As far as learning though, with time, patience and a bit of logical thinking its totally doable! My main hobby is restoring cars, ive been doing that for about 12 years so the metalwork skills Ive used in this project have transferred from there really. If you need any specific help or tips though, I'll be happy to help!

Go for it, its great fun and anyone can do it! You should dive in at the deep end and start one!

Stuff arrived, so I'll be cracking on in the coming days. Updates have been fewer due to work commitments and family, but should have some time soon to get this back on track again.

Heres the goodies:

760a5c59.jpg

I was waiting for the new Asus board but its taking a while, and I will definitely upgrade to it when its out, so for now ive gone with the Asrock z68 board, as heard bad things about Zotac equivalents. Its a 2600k in the box, with 8gb of RAM and a 6870 as it will run under OSX nicely with no tweaks. The plpan is for this to be my dev machine for OSX and a home media server and the EVGA will be the beast for all other tasks!

The m-itx will be watercooled in its own loop, and I have also decided to experiment with this...

b6c6eb0b.jpg

Its a PCI x16 extender for the GPU, I'll let you know how it performs.

Finally a teaser to demonstrate just how tiddly m-itx really is!

1d79e445.jpg

This makes my

Wow looking good! I really like the way you setup the water cooling tubes on that SR-2. Bonus points for using an SR-2 in the build too! Can't wait to see it done. :)

Update 9/4/2012

Im in love with itx boards now, this thing is just amazing! Its the total opposite to my SR-2 but just as cool in its own way. I forgot to take photos of it in its bare state as I was so excited but here are a few shots of it built up with the CPU and EK block on.

Marked up the inner plate from the desk roughly for cutting.

d846b378.jpg

Made it up to my workshop, wish I just had a huge shed in the garden to use for a local workshop as its such a pain with it being so far away but suppose Im lucky to have it really, progress would be much faster though if it was nearer. Anyway, moan over, managed to cut the areas for wiring out and drilled the pilots for the PCI-E extender to fit through.

4cd10a11.jpg

Also cracked the plasma cutter out again to fit the IO plate into the end of the desk

eaa47728.jpg

Then removed the steel part of the desk from the wooden base to cut the slots in that, used a mixture of tools to do this job, but most of the fettling was done with a file to get it just right.

859345d5.jpg

Back on the wooden part again and cut out

acbac83d.jpg

Next task was the fitting of the slot loading DVD drives, these were going to be mounted in a different manner originally as the ITX plans werent dreamt up when I designed the desk, but now theres a mini PC in the right hand wing, its a little tight! So I fabricated a bracket that would allow access to all the mini PC parts simply by removing six M4's. It took a little work but here are the in progress shots...

5c520ac8.jpg

The basic parts, then started out with M4 set screws but decided I didnt like them, plus when stacked in place with only 30mm between them, it would be impossible to get them out of the lower tray, and this wasnt acceptable as I would have zero access to the PC below them...

96e0199c.jpg

...so I ground the heads down on some cap-heads to about 2mm deep...

b9ffbda1.jpg

...perfect as now I could...

601cfcd7.jpg

7e361fc8.jpg

...reach both sets of fixings through the top ones with an allen key, problem solved!

b5468531.jpg

1ee9f990.jpg

All fitted and Im happy, they are snug, line up and look a lot nicer then my other standard DVD drives, the only issue was I didnt realise the power plug is smaller than a standard one, so Ive had to order two adapters, but they'll be here in plenty of time.

Didnt take any progress pictures of the res being fitted but thats because I was just drilling holes again, so here's the placement of said Reservoir...

84aa6bb9.jpg

3538ac28.jpg

Ignore the CPU in/out hoses on this one, its just for testing, they will be re-routed to a much nicer place, but how awesome are ITX boards!

Thats all for today, maybe more wednesday but we'll see!

Ouch @ the scar on your childs neck.
I would ask what was wrong for her to go through that but i dont want to pry. :)

Love the build, always wanted to do the same but i like being able to move my rig lol

very cool update

it is coming along nicely

Thanks, progress is slow but then again the project is huge now so Im still happy with how its coming along.

Very awesome work! Can't wait to see it completed :)

Thanks! Neither can I...

My daughter needed the pressure relieving around her brain, so she had some of the lower skull removed and the pressure drained, as it was putting excess pressure and tension on her spinal chord, she is awaiting another operation, as they found this problem when doing an MRI scan for other issues :(

Thanks for the kind words about the build, and yep this thing weighs an absolute tonne already, and thats without the fluid!

Update 16/4/2012

Minor update as lifes been hectic as usual, i'll just post the pictures and be done with it...

This is dark blue btw, the outer side will be white to match the SR-2 half of the desk,

da2211b1.jpg

Pass through fittings sorted.

6ebc6db0.jpg

More EK goodness in the form of their compression fittings...

bbc76b87.jpg

I forgot my packet of 90 degree elbows for these, so unfortunately I couldnt connect it all up, but they look sweet!

6f75b84e.jpg

And finally a shot of it all in the right place with the tubing started! This will have blue EK coolant running through it and the hoses are UV blue too so it will look pretty with the Cold Cathodes shining on it all hopefully. Im going to get this half of the desk up and running and then take it home where I can continue with the build of the rest of the SR-2 half as most of it is just wiring and sleeving now, which my workshop is just not set up for and its too far away to spend any less than 2 hours, which I dont get too often. Hope this little lot keep you all hooked for a bit, until next time, thanks guys!

Update 22/04/2012

Had a good day today and managed to get a lot of the annoying out of sight jobs done, the underneath of my desk is going to be quite busy so I decided to try to crack on with it today. Got everything except the pump mounted where I wanted it so im happy. Also managed to finish the laying out of the itx PC, so almost finished now with that part of the build, then I just need to do some serious wiring on the EVGA monster and we are laughing!

So heres how it all looked last time I left the workshop

e5334100.jpg

First job today was to cut a hole out for the Blue Air Penetrator ive bought for the itx PC

c41442c2.jpg

I then focused my attention on connecting the other CPU hose to the bulkhead fitting, so I cut it to length and fitted this side...

26dc0dd7.jpg

This time round I had remembered the 90 degree fittings too, so I connected up the other side. Since this is seperated from the itx part of the desk, the tubing is white, this is because its on the SR-2 side if that makes sense?

436c07a8.jpg

c41f5584.jpg

Fitted the fan grill, and secured the Res in place in the corner. All of the hoses in the itx area are UV blue and the fluid is EK UV Blue too so it should look quite nice hopefully.

I then flipped the desk over upside down to start working on the out of sight stuff. All of this will be hidden by the board accross the bottom of the desk, so I started by fitting the 6870 with the riser ribbon to the underside and made a bracket for it from an old I/O panel.

786b0a84.jpg

I was a bit carried away at this point so forgot to take in progress photos, but here is the PSU strap, the inside is lined with adhesive backed neoprene so its a snug and resonance free fit!

49242e4e.jpg

de82d39f.jpg

663df759.jpg

Finally I mounted the rad. Dont laugh, I know its major overkill, but I may watercool the GPU too in the future and add it to the same loop, if not I will probably swap the rad out and use a 240 or something when funds allow, this is one of my old rads so it will do until I have a little extra free cash!

Thats it guys, hope you like?!?!

very nice update

Cheers mate, its quiet in here isnt it!

Ok, so over the past few days the progress has been slow and steady, I hate painting things! Originally the case was to be sent to the powdercoaters, but I decided against this as I have the equipment to paint it myself, and I missed my deadline for the drop off to the friendly powdercoaters!

So I prepped the metalwork with IPA and a tack rag, and put on a very thin coat of etch primer, it was cold so the cats were applied in very thin layers and left to flash for a little longer than normal.

After the primer had dried for a couple of days and I next had an opportunity to get to the workshop, I rubbed it doen with a scotch pad (red) and then IPA'd and tack ragged it again. Then I started applying the satin black top coat...

2ba7d331.jpg

0369b524.jpg

Left it for a couple more days to ensure the paint was ready to start messing about with. In the meantime I took home the trays that sit inside the case and started to put the Dinoc on. I know this stuff has been used a lot in the last few months on builds, but I really like it and its only overkill if you use it everywhere, I plan only to use it in specific areas to enhance the looks rather than detract from it.

Here's the results so far...
3f0a7b58.jpg

11fe8c3f.jpg

There are a few more subtle areas that will be dinoc'd but thats the main areas done for now.

I then started making a few bits for the electronics in the build, only simple stuff for now. The Aquaero will control most things but I want the fans in channels so I needed to make some headers to keep the cabling tidy. Heres what came next...

b48980bc.jpg

8d008766.jpg

These will fit underneath the trays and will be controlled via the Aquaero and will make removal of fans and hardware so much easier.

When I finally got back to the workshop, I started building up and wiring the HDD caddy in the left 'wing' of the case, heres how I got on. Ive ordered some sticky pads for the cable tidying and some Adhesive backed Velcro for the SSD mounting, as soon as all the cooling hardware is in, Im hoping to take it home to finish!

b0fc4216.jpg

Slowly tidying it all as I go...

Thats pretty much it for now guys, as I ran out of time, next time will be a big update, Im really excited now as its progressing rather than still in the cutting and modding stages, soon I will have a fully functioning PC!

Thanks!

I've been watching this build for a while. it's something I've always wanted to attempt to build.
I really like what you've done so far, amazing craftsmanship, can't wait for the next update.

I just went through the whole thread and man, you're doing an awesome job on that desk! Everything is coming together beautifully, can't wait to see this thing complete. I'm in love with the SR-2 boards...Hopefully I can build one some day! I'm not sure if i just missed it or what...but what are the uses of the SR-2 and Mini ITX setups? Hope everything is well with the daughter...I have one on the way, hate seeing something like that.

This is a very impressive build.

Why thank you!

Thanks mate, and glad you enjoyed it all. I love the SR-2, im kind of dissapointed with the SR-3 (x) but glad really as my board is and was my ultimate dream board! Im using the mini ITX for my development, prefer to keep it seperate to my main PC as I can use them side by side and also use one as a Hackintosh! My daughter is fully recovered now too from the first operation so alls well, thanks though once again!

Sorry its been such a while, Ive had a busy few weeks, firstly got Burgled and then my car got written off so not been around much lately! Anyway finally got down to the workshop and made some progress, annoyingly the little blighters nicked a rucksack whic had a load of bit in it ready to bring with me, so Im missing a few vital parts but hey, I'll get those ordered after the Bank Hols!

Heres what I managed to do...

First up got the mobo in, its tiny winy!

61dd8806.jpg

Think it looks pretty next the Carbon Fibre, shame you wont see much of it as its a tight fit to say the least!

a21f3ae6.jpg

At this point I was still trying to work out a way to hold the res, as the mounts sent with it are just too big, but I figured it later on.

Started on the cables, some are sleeved, others will never be seen so are left, lazy I know but its all hidden and time is precious at the moment.

4a2cde28.jpg

Never used the spiral stuff before, but due to the tightness of the bends on these parts, it was necessary this time, theyre good, but I prefer the look without them, oh well.

72ae308e.jpg

The DVD drives were next, these are fixed to trays with super strong Velcro and then slotted in and fitted in place with shortened M4 capheads.

6ed89be0.jpg

I had already Dinoc'd the divider at home so here it is prior to being fitted. White carbon fibre effect on the one side facing the SR-2 part of the case, and dark blue on the other for the itx theme...

c0159481.jpg

First of all though I had to install the top DVD drive, and the SSD both were fixed down using the same method as the other DVD drive, it works well. The slot loading DVD drives have been a nitemare!! I ordered adapters for the mini sata and power inputs from Hong Kong off Ebay, waited 3 weeks to find out they had sent me micro ones! Doh, then ordeered the correct ones from Scan which fitted, brought them home to sleeve, put them in my rucksack to bring back and guess what, they nicked my rucksack! So Im back to square one! Waiting!

a2534fa8.jpg

Then onto the divider.

bd2e7872.jpg

260e8c3a.jpg

Finally installed the in and out tubing to the outside of the divider, and hey presto, if I had my adapters the itx PC would be running tonight! Doh!

Some glory shots, sorry I only used my phone so not great but gives you an idea of the look...

Ok so it had been tooooo long, I apologise for the delay, life has been very busy of late, first up our house was burgled and then my car was written off whilst parked up outside the house (a neighbours hand brake failed and rolled down the street into my car!) So project Interior Des(k)ign hs unfortunately until recently slipped down the priority slope.

As far as progress is though, Ive done quite a bit since the last update. The biggest reason for this is the fact that I managed to bring the desk home. Once it reached a certain stage it was not practical for me to keep it at the workshop so I decided to cart it all home, this has made it easier to chip away at, as even if I only have 30mins free I can at least make progress of sorts.

Im not revealing any final shots but the itx rig is finished!! Its awesome, tiny, but cool and running at 4.2Ghz rock solid! As I said the final shots will be of the desk in its entirety not just the itx build, I will reveal don't worry. The flexi-riser linked to the 6870 has been flawless, I've had none of the problems associated with these in some builds, no artifacting or BSOD's at all, thumbs up from me! Having the mini PC has been a saviour, its now my development machine and is completely separated from my other stuff, it makes life so much simpler.

Thats enough of the waffle anyways for now, on with the pictures of the main build which I have neglected for too long! In fact as soon as I took the SR-2 out of the box again I got excited, this board has to be in my opinion one of the best looking ever! I love it!

So the desk is now in the corner it will live in, its not finished as far as the actual woodwork is concerned but it stands on its own, and the monitors are mounted on the adjustable mount I made, they can be slid to be used in Portrait if needed but also in Landscape, which is my preference.

b54f2ff2.jpg

Apologies for the mess, its work in progress but thats just to give you guys an idea of how it all looks when in place.

So as for the desk, Ive been mostly wiring things it seems, I decided to go with custom cables in the end just because they are different (not better!) so it a change from the norm thats all. I started with the fans ages ago, slowly progressed to the wires that feed the aquaero, its tedious to say the least, solder, crimp, solder, crimp....

7a271313.jpg

Thats the cabling for the 2 Rads, the desk fans (penetrators x2 banks), and the HDD cooling fan all done. I need to do tonnes more, including 4 x water temp senders and several other temp senders for the CPU's etc. altogether there will be approx 10 different senders.

Progress shot, trying to keep it all tidy, working out lengths etc...

9c99d6d7.jpg

Also fitted the second rad complete with fans for the first time...

15449ef5.jpg

The next task was the motherboard tray, I last mounted this in the desk about 3 months ago and lots has changed since then, I nervously place it in the gap, perfick!

8e425ca0.jpg

As soon as I plonked it in though I realised the tubing routing was way out, doh! Gonna need to change all of them to enable it to all fit! As a side issue, whilst building the itx machine I found out my DDC pump (purchased on the AV Forums) was duff! So Ive had to use the one from the SR-2 build for the itx, so if anyone has a DDC they want rid of, drop me a PM...thanks! Once I knew it all fitted still, I painted it Satin black and left it all to dry out.

Following day test fit...

3dbe4e2f.jpg

All good with a tiny bit of Di-Noc for good measure! Installed my lighting just to check the look was what I was after...

8279af06.jpg

cfe76c6f.jpg

Yep! Im happy, subtle but Red! Got a bit carried away at this point an started re-routing all of the tubing. This was after about 1 1/2 hrs messing, changing, tweaking, and starting again!

004ca404.jpg

Its the neatest I can get it for now. I need some more fittings and possibly some more tubing for the second loop. Next job is to put the block onto the 7970 and look for a reasonably priced second 7970, then its testing time hopefully! Oooh exciting! Cant wait to start OC'ing this beast and pushing it with CS6 and some gaming fun!

Let me know your thoughts guys! Its always nice to hear what people think!

So hopefully this update, of mammoth proportions will make up for my lack of progress on this project, you see there are a number of reasons, but mostly a lack of enthusiasm, I bought a Mac Air which kind of took my focus, and I also have too many other projects that Im really torn between... Some of which are...

4945CA54-4CFC-4F03-B11F-C4897BFFB2FC-1245-00000136329CACDD_zps64196a25.jpg

and...

and helping my Dad finish this...

ADC12380-3064-4F61-92B7-E893CE71027A-1245-0000013629680433_zps70f5c2b4.jpg

so hopefully they stand as reasonable excuses that warrant time out, ok so no they don't... So heres what Ive been up to over the past couple of months, the progress has been painfully slow, that plus the fact that I have had a couple of issues, first of all a broken pump, then a problem with a couple of orders, all of which slowed me down and meant I needed to save again!

So, first job, as always, destroy your previous progress and your room, that helps to not only motivate you, but also to disorientate you, and make sure that things take twice as long as usual to find, thats all part of it isn't it!!

8B1AA90F-F11F-4543-BE07-6B0AC0DAA7C7-648-0000003EC0961DA8_zps302caf09.jpg

Received my last fan to replace a broken one (yes I did it!) so fitted that first to warm up. Then onto stripping the 7970 down to put the block on it, first up remove all the screws, there are tonnes of them! Then clean all the old thermal compound off with the cleaning solutions, then onto the new pads with a dab of thermal adhesive.

Sorted! Then whack the new block on, gotta say I loooooove Ek they are just awesome

Fit = Perfect
Looks = Clean and classy
Performance = Fantastic

How often do you get those three in one?

Another job sorted. Neeeext!

One of the problems I had was that the mini Sata cables were moulded together with the power and the Sata in one, trouble is, they are really short as standard, so I set about sorting the issue my way...
Before...

Use the power part, but then replace the short Sata cable with a 'proper' 2m long Red Sata cable that actually reaches the mobo, always helps!

Then onto some of the trusty MDPC stuff!

Next job on the list was to rummage through my box of electronic bits,

Starting back on the making of leads, lots of them, I hate this job, first cut to length, then strip ends, then take appropriate crimps, and the MDPC tool and start crimping...

After a reasonable amount of time we have this...

Problem... Because Im using the thicker gauge wire the crimps dont always close properly, so just to make sure they are 1. Good and strong, and 2. Can handle the current they require, I solder every joint! Aaaargh, slow tedious work!

So connections and crimps thats Mobo 2x24, CPU power 2x8 x2, Fans 3 x12, GPU...you get the idea, hours of work really all in 3 photos! Doh! Worth it in the long run though.

So the new pump was installed in its home, on top of the Silverstone fans, to keep it chilly, but as I had removed the stickers from the fans they looked a bit, well, dull I suppose, so spent some time messing about creating a few designs and ended up with this.

Printed them on some sticky label paper, and cut them out...

Rubbish photo, sorry but its the only one I have. You get the idea.

Time to drop the mobo in with the appropriate cables attached and tidily clipped on to the bottom of the mobo tray. Couldn't take any pics of this in progress as I didn't have 4 hands sorry, but here is the result.

At this point I was chuffed to say the least, so I stopped!

Next day, fresh and enthused again I plodded on with the routing of the hose, now at this point I have to say, please don't criticise, I know that the colours wont be to everyones taste, but this is a 2 year dream project thats Ive planned and planned, so I am happy with my choice, no I didn't run out of hose, it was planned this way...

Measure, cut, screw on fittings, check, fail, unscrew fittings, re-cut 5mm longer, screw fittings back on, sorted. That was pretty much it for a couple of hours. I consider myself to have reasonably tough hands, but doing this, destroyed them, wore through the callouses!

Almost there...

Ok so are we ready???

Guess what Im doing here?

Yep leak testing! The kitchen roll is intentional and not a whacky design feature, honest. Couple of minor leaks, none of the fittings from Ek I hasten to add, rather, the front of the Ek Reservoir, weird but true, it was pouring out, and secondly, all 4 of the aquacomputer inline temperature sensors, tightened them to what I would consider overly tight, and they are sorted!

Left it to churn overnight, checked in the morning and bingo, a watertight, quiet PC!

Ignore the rear cables, the rear IO isn't fitted yet, and the cables need tidying up at the rear. Time to fire this beast up...

Didn't quite work first time...doh! I have a dead CPU!!!! Majorly huuuge dissapointment! But popped the jumper onto only CPU 0 and got it all going in the end, looking on eBay now for another one but Xeon's hold their value well so will wait a little as its useable, and surprisingly quick already... There's tonnes more to come but here's a teaser for now...

Excuse the quality, its rubbish, but heres a little shot of it running Unigine Heaven benchmarks for the first time, it was the first program I ran! Then I overclocked the GPU to 1150 and 1400 respectively, and tried again!

Also spent about an hour sorting the different features of the Aquaero, this thing is amazing, individual fans mapped on individual curves, I can see the difference on the inlet outlet of the Rads, individually, either as a figure using a virtual sensor, or a graph to plot said variables! Its a quality bit of kit!

So far with the CPU overclocked to 3.8Ghz (lame I know, but a start!) the mobo at 200Mhz on the PCI and the GPU on the above figures, I'm not going over 32 degrees on 100% load, happy to say the least!

Let me know your thoughts so far guys!

Jobs to do:

Tidy cables
Fit rear IO panel
Tune aquaero further
Finish installing all software
Get the perspex inlay for the top cut and etched
Fit top/lid
Source second CPU :-(
Complete the structure of the desk exterior
O/C a little more
PLAY!!
Start my Prodigy build!

Hope this makes up for the lack of updates folks, sorry!

Amazing build, I will be ordering my new pc stuff next week. Thanks for the motivation! Not sure what routes I will be going as far as watercooling but it will be a eyefinity setup with 3 24" samsung 245bw. Case will be a Lian Li A77F. I have a few car projects as well one of them being a e36 bmw project doing a ls1 swap. Love your color combination fits well with everything, especially the motherboard. I may do a yellow scheme with the asrock oc formula. Course then I would have to switch the fan led's, but thats not too hard.

I currently am building a type 1 1600cc to factory specs and a custom Dynosoar, scat part 2135cc monster. Both for my sand rail.

Awesome build! will be following along!

What is that car you said you helped your dad build? It is beautiful!

It seems our hobbies usually fit with several others too! Thanks and glad you like it, I think the yellow scheme would look good definitely as its not a common one but always looks good with Black...good luck!

Niice! The Bug will have a tame 1776cc as its my wifes daily, and fuel here in the UK is VERY expensive. The Karmann Ghia thhough has a 2332cc IDA'd street/strip engine in and should be capable of 13's, fun times!

Thanks mate, glad you like the Desk, the car is a 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, thanks for the kind words about that too!

Also as I'm sure a lot of you are aware, EK have a new site, it would be great if you would vote for my desk on their site, I would be super super grateful... Here's the link:

Thanks ever so much in advance!
