I've been wanting to build a computer desk for the last four years, and now that I've finally got the space and access to the tools I need, I've begun!

Just so you guys know, I work really slow, so this thread will be updated when I've got the time, but here's where I am so far.

Here's the plans -

Plan.sized.jpg

I'm building the substructure out of Maple Plywood, and the top out of Maple Hardwood - here's the substructure coming together.

That's where I'm at so far - as I get more work done, I'll post pictures!
Thanks for looking!

Must......resist.....temptation.....GRK!

Looks like a good start so far. Good luck so far. I think most all of us here plan to build a custom desk at one point or another (at least I know I do).

(Phew!) DANG, Sorry! All in good fun.

::edit #2::
When I do get around to building my own, I'll probably put that pic in my first post just to get it out of the way.

hope you have a doorway beg enough to fit that through unless you plan to de-assemble when you take it into your house? looks quite nice so far. Can you maybe draw up a view to show how it will look from the front. I'd like to see if you plan to have any cubbies on the desk or whatever you would like to call them.

I really like your design... are you going to have more desk above the actual desktop or will it just stop there?

And like Havok said make sure you can disassemble it to get it where you need it.

When I built my own desk I had to assemble the top in my room to get it to fit.

I started my own worklog of it here . Not to copy you or anything :p

But yea building my own desk was a lot of fun for me so have fun with yours. Keep updating as I would love to see your progress :D

As his hand hits his head and he looks down. Oops

Moved thread because it isn't a case mod. Good luck on the desk though.

Thanks for all the good words guys, and yes, it will come apart for moving/transport.

Here's the plans that show how it will come apart.

Yeah thats good that you have plans to have it in peices... I'm assuming they wont actually be attatched to each other, just sitting next to each other. That would make the most sense to me.

Where's your actual pc gunna sit? and do you have plans for a top?

keep the updates coming.... I love desk worklogs :p

(pst i finished mine btw :D )

ok - here's where I'm putting the back together:

And here are some Google SketchUp drawings of the desk:

The Sketch-Up model isn't perfect, but close enough to give you guys a good idea.

I like what you're doing with the glass or plexi you have on the ends of the desk. I thought of doing something like that and putting my computer in the drawer under it, not in the case but with the motherboard secured to the drawer. I think it's a neat idea to have your components spread out and visible - you could put your psu, optical drives, hard drives on the left side and your motherboard on the right side, rig up some holes for ventilation and figure out a way to extend the cables.

oo, coming along well it seems. I would try to build my own but don't have the tools fer it.

Yeah I would like to some some updates on this desk. It looks really good.

Wow - thanks guys for the bumps - I haven't done any work on it in a month thanks to my crazy work schedule - but I promise I'll get some work done in the next few days and some new pics!

Nice, I wish I had the time (and skill) to build a desk...

It's looking good man, keep up the good work and remember.. THE MORE PICS THE MERRIER.

Welp, sorry I've been away so long - I just don't ever seem to have any time to work on the desk. Working 60 hour weeks and having a girlfriend who lives 45 miles away has made this a difficult project to finish, but I have a little bit of an update. I've been working on a very complex part of the desk for a while now, and I've finally got all the pieces ready to go together - here's some quick pictures of them.

There won't be any more updates for at least a week - I've got tickets to Twelth Night on friday, helping my brother move on saturday and eating dinner with the girlfriends parents on sunday.... packed weekend, it is.

Well, I ended up coming home early today and making some progress - here ya go.

I bet it's getting pretty obvious what I'm up to.

cool man...i always love watching people progress through their projects :)

looks good so far...but......you're 2 months into it and that's all ya have? :p JK keep up the good work...

Ah man seeing those pics make me miss woodshop my favorite class of all. We made AK47's, M16's, Swords, Axe's all kinda weapons you can think of. Nice job.

neat. Power distribution is one of the things I still have to sort out for my someday desk project.

Heh - It's something I still have to figure out in this Desk.

Oh yes, there will be more. :D

Ok, I'm back - sorry this hasn't been updated in so long, I've been away from the house for about a month - I did some electrical work, here's the pictures.

And before any of you electricians ask, yes, I did go back and put heat-shrink over the exposed ends of those connectors! The pictures just didn't get updated.

I just started messing with Sketchup yesterday just for this very purpose, designing and building my own computer desk. I hadn't thought of power distribution but glad you did so that now I can!!

But I got sidetracked and ended up making a model of my room.

Wow! Impressive work!

I really like the recessed glass, plus your power/cable management is a really good idea. I can't imagine taking on such a task, but when it's all said and done you'll feel very accomplished!

Keep up the good work.....and pictures!

Looks like a nice desk. I had one very similar to that and it was an excellent workstation. Good build quality so far, keep up the good work.

It's been a while, but I'm finally working on the desk again. Here's some pics.

Sweet, I have always been a fan of putting the mobo tray in a drawer...

Heh, nice "drawers" ... can we see the detailed plans for those?
