Project Cars?

2 videos of interest. Very rough alpha footage of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in action and the 2009 Ford Focus. Both of these cars are ridiculously hard to drive stock but this guy seems to have gotten them setup pretty well. The interiors will most likely remain Plain Jane for a bit before they add in the actual instrumentation and other features.

Just new cars that we got in the last month or so. None are close to being finished; most don't even have an interior. The Ford Boss Mustang doesn't even have a damage model or working steering wheel yet! All are missing logos, details, and bodywork. Just figured some of you might be interested in how the game is turning out and the progression that SMS is making during the alpha stage of development.

All of the following pictures are downsampled 9x. There is no AA currently in the game as they want us to test downsampling. I also cut off the post effects such as FXAA and SMAA. Of course when you cut them on it looks even better. But I figured someone might be interested in what it looks like with those features off.

If you see wavy lines it's not bad textures; it the heat waves coming off the engine and tailpipes. I can cut that off if you want to know what it looks like without those features on.

The game has made huge strides in the past year. Engine is faster, but still glitchy and flickery. DX11 maxed out is finally viable (and oddly, faster than DX9). Most of the cars are still an arcade-y disgrace, but a few are really quite good and getting very near the level required to please most sim racers. I drove the BMW M1 today for several hours and, while definitely still not where it should be, it's exponentially closer than any previous car I've tested with this project. Biggest problems remain the tire model, physics model, garage setup options not translating properly into how the car feels and performs on the track, and FFB/controls/etc lots of problems still with finding a sweet spot that feels reasonable, much less perfect. Plus, my driver jerks his arms around like Cruisin' USA + Parkinsons Disease on every tiny wheel movement, even with fairly large lock.

Getting better... but Q1 2014 is awfully close now....

Steam anyone?

Any more current impressions? This always looked like a game that could have massive potential, but likely still unpolished..

Ooo, how did you get that in there? :p

Also, not sure if you are aware, your start bar is pink.

Yea it's pink because my mom misses her flowers from back home. I have my theme in Win 8 64 set to flowers. Anything to make a 76 year old's day a little brighter. :)

They have decided to make the game SteamWorks. It has been suggested that in the future, after full Steam integration, the possibility of doing an Alpha / Beta early access on Steam. But that is not now. Today is the first day that we can download the game directly from Steam. Which is pretty cool! :)

So what's this about players buying into the game and being able to create content, then receiving 70% of the profit? Sounds too good to be true.

Damn, I wish I got in on this when they were still offering packages.... Looking much better than the last time I checked this out.

New trailer for the game. Keep in mind that they're probably using multiple Titans and developer settings. I use 2X down sampling personally + SMAA, but it's really hard on my 7950. Can't wait for the new AMD cards to come out so I can compare them to the new Nvidia cards.

Compare that to a really good video probably made by a fan.

Then a person that probably has a PC similar to me. :)

Pretty cool trailers. I really hope this game turns out well. Doesn't even have to be on iRacing, rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa level. If it sits somewhere closer to those games than Forza, I'll be super happy.

McLaren anyone?
1994 McLaren F1
1997 McLaren F1 GTR
2013 McLaren 12C
2013 McLaren 12C GT3
2013 McLaren P1

Short Trailer of older cars in the game.

One last note. The game uses all 8 of my cores at around 50% with a single car. Of course multiplayer and a full race would be different. That's pretty darn sweet I must admit! And it hammers the hell out of my (2) 7950's in CrossfireX. I can't get close to maxing this game out at a playable frame rate.
:)

I'm excited to see the final product.

rFactor 2 has me bummed out content, performance and community size-wise. I really like the way it drives, but it looks like ass (even maxed out it's only "ok"), runs way worse than it should for how poor the visuals are and the good content is fairly slim unless you venture into mods, where it's just not up to snuff at the moment.

iRacing... is iracing. I am considering subscribing again until Assetto Corsa or pCars are released, or rFactor 2 improves.

So, pretty much waiting on Assetto Corsa and Project CARS at this point, as I have been for a long time!

Right now we're focused on tire testing. So many different views on tire handling! I'm amazed that the development team answers all of their concerns in a timely manner. The new rainy weather effects are a sight to behold. I'll try to dig up a video of them by someone with a faster computer than me. They are amazing to say the least.

It's really fun being in a true Alpha stage of development for a game. Best money I ever spent!

As much as I love PC gaming... racing games are just better in front of a TV. I don't plan on getting a Steam OS console in the foreseeable future so I think i'll get this for PS4. I really hope it translates well and we get a great blend between the best driving franchises. The game looks good so far. Hope it plays well.

This needs to come out! NAO!!!
Seeing as there is currently no way to give them my money.....

So what are the physics like these days? Improved much? On par with other top tier sims?

I would disagree, by a lot.

Very excited!

I can't say as I'm not in on it, but from the things I've read leaked from their forums, they're hard at work trying their best to make the game drive as well (realistic) as it can. Hamilton's suggestions for improvements are usually really great, from what I've read, and if they're implementing them as he suggests, then it will drive great.

Yeah, I have alpha access, but I haven't played the game in a long while as I don't have access to my steering wheel. Last time I played it, it did feel a bit... fake. The cars floated and didn't seem to yaw correctly.... but that was a while ago, so I wonder if they've improved.

Lol. Your response is kind of like me bringing a Nissan GTR to a race and saying it's fast, and then you come up with a Bugatti Veyron and saying... "Your car ain't shit compared to mine."

Honestly dude, who but the top 10% of income owners has a setup like that in their house? Most people have a couch, and a big ass TV or projector. I was talking strictly in practicality terms. 98% of gamers won't have a setup like that, and in a ideal home racing environment that would be ideal but for most of us it's not feasible. And honestly you could have the same setup with a console too... that's just a frame with a bunch of TVs on it and places to put a wheel and pedals. Only difference would be that with the console you'd have one big tv rather than mutliple. Also, I checked on that website and all those components work with the PS3. And honestly, if you want a wrap around view like that with a singular display you might as well go with something like this:

At the end of the day, for a simulator, you want whatever gets you the best ratio of seating distance to screen size with a wheel. Playing racing sims on a TV isn't great unless you can be within 4 or 5 feet of your TV with a wheel. I personally prefer racing on a PC because I already have a computer desk that I can clamp my wheel on, just pull the monitor forward a bit and I'm good to go. Gaming on the TV, I have to pull the whole damned couch over or get a dedicated chair from somewhere else and then get a coffee table or another dedicated table to attach the wheel... too much hassle. PC works best for me.

Jonz showing off more in game footage with a little McLaren teaser at the end.

Some of the early McLaren footage. High rez textures haven't been introduced and the tires are WIP as the car literally was just introduced recently.

Grass pop up and draw distance(of said grass) was annoying the hell out of me in that video. Does it really do that in the game? Can't unsee it now....

The car doesn't have a distance model since it just came out. So when it is far away it defaults to another model then comes back into focus when it gets closer. The car is in noway finished as it was released 2 days ago. It takes them 3 months or more to get to the point where it is finished. And even then they will add a new feature to the game and break it.

The track just came out for Christmas. Like the car it will take months before they fix the grass and other features the way they want it. If I can find some of my old track videos I will upload some to show the difference when they polish a track.

Last thing I want to say is hope you have a SSD for the game to run off of when it is released. It has a ridiculous amount of textures and every car has different decals. I experimenting with 50+ car A.I. races in the alpha. Hopefully they leave in the option, but optimize it more. So far they have done a great job with listening to feedback so no doubt it will get looked at.
