"Project Black"

It's not gonna be the iPhone, that's not switching anytime soon. My guess is that it'll be some combination of the "crazy new phone" and the "network upgrades".

4G network? I can't imagine what revolutionary things T-Mobile can bring to the table...

If by soon you mean sometime (hopefully early) next year to VZW then your right.

Apple has an exclusivity contract with AT&T on the iPhone until mid 2010. How would the iPhone go to Verizon which is CDMA based?

i bet its going to be the launch of the blackberry storm2, that seems to be the general consensus on when its coming out for verizon so i bet thats it

If they're saying it's going to boost them to #3 in the nation, it's going to be bigger than the HD2, or the Storm, which is a device that has an absolutely horrible rep.

This is going to be one of a few things:

The iPhone, which is POSSIBLE, but definitely not probable. If they did this, they'd have to change their network to standard GSM bands, and that's not happening. If they didn't change the network, Apple would have to make an entire new model of iPhone just for T-Mo, and if they were going to do that, they'd just do it for Verizon (and Sprint).

Sprint merger/buyout - much more likely, but still not happening. I still have enough connections in Sprint to know about this WELL in advance, and Project Black was described as having employee training and classes. Wouldn't have that for a merger.

Pricing change - This is the most likely option, and with T-Mo being desperate for subs and Sprint killing everyone on price (for a national carrier), I can see them opening up a $50 unlimited everything plan as the standard, not a loyalty perk. They're going to bet the farm on this, because they're going to need tons of new subs to make this work, but I think they can pull it off. This is the most likely of the scenarios.

4G - Not likely. They want to glom onto WiMax, but even an ardent Sprint fanboy like myself knows WiMax is a failure waiting to happen. The future is LTE. T-Mo doesn't have the network to even go 3G, let alone 4G at this point in time. Now, while they COULD potentially anounce they're skipping 3G to jump right to LTE, it's not likely, and it WON'T make them #3. As far as I can see, only the pricing plan could do that.

I'm bet your right about the price plan change, but that isn't really a game changer at all. Makes sense that the carrier with the worst network should charge the least.

But as a Sprint fanboy, don't fret too much about Wimax. It likely will co-exist with LTE, mostly targeting mobile data usage, while LTE will focus on handsets. Plus, Clearwire (and thus Sprint) has already stated that they built flexibility into their network and can switch to LTE if it seems more promising.

In Canada a second carrier is now about to carry the iphone, so it's possible it's happening down here as well. An alternative might be Obama as the new spokesman G'NIGHT FOLKS!

Peteman, a $50 plan for unlimited everything Most DEFINITELY a game changer. Hell, look at everyone fawning over Sprint's $70 unlimited mobile plan right now. If T-Mo can get themselves some decent towers in the heartland, and still charge the $50, it's definitely a game changer. If they can stay in the urban areas and steal away the MetroPCS, Boost, Cricket etc customers, it's DEFINITELY a game changer. We'll have to see though, I have my ear to the ground regarding anything concrete.

Yeah but that's because their exclusivity contract expired with the first one. AT&T has an exclusivity contract with Apple on the iPhone until 2010...Apple would be sued up the wazoo if they broke it...

Someone came across a blog from "Carol" and sounds so far to be the most plausible.

"T-Mobile Representative checking in. Just to let all of you know “Project Dark” (as it is being called) is a couple of different things. First off, when going into retail stores, the representatives will look a bit different. There will be new uniforms for all consisting of black shirts and gray pants. Secondly, and probably the most important part, will be the introduction of a “Everything Unlimited” plan for only ~$50 per month. This will include minutes, messages, data, and basically everything else. The goal is to have everyone switch from the cheap but bad coverage carriers (i.e. Cricket, Boost, Metro PCS) to our service for the same price. The number of people estimated to be using the small carriers is in the 25-30 million range. Combined with our current base of about 34 million customers, this would easily push us to 3rd, if not 2nd, in customer base between the four major carriers. Sorry people, no iPhone. We are getting the 3G BB 9700, two Nokia N series, and a few new Android phones though. Those will all be very cool. Also, don’t worry, we are not being bought out or buying out another company. We are just getting a little infusion of cash from Deutsche Telekom and doing what every carrier should be doing: More for Less. Remember that motto. You might be hearing it a little more often soon…"

This alone would keep me from switching to another carrier if it did happen. and will practically cut my bill in half.

I think it would highly depend on how they handle the shared plan pricing. $50 for everything is great for a single person. But right now on Sprint, my family is paying the equivalent of $30 per person on an Everything Data plan which is essentially unlimited everything now. So is Tmobile offering a good deal? Yes. But I wouldn't call it a game changer.

If true that is a huge game changer :) $50 per month for unlimited minutes, data, texts, e-mail ? Fuck me, my iPhone with tax for all of that is $180  Even T-Mobile right now with full unlimited everything on a Blackberry or Android is like $129 per month. So to get all that for just $50 per month would be amazing, especially in this sh!t recession we are knee deep in.

Agreed...I have a 500 minute family plan right now for $60 + $10/month for unlimited texts for both lines and even after a corporate discount of 15% after taxes and all we still pay around $63/month. This would be pretty huge, especially if it included unlimited data!

Can I call it or what? lol

Seriously debating T-Mo now, as long as there are some Android UMA phones coming out.

Sounds plausible, yes.

I think even though, I'll go with the Sprint everythign plan for $70/mo and a hero. I think Sprint will have much better 3g coverage where I am. If tmobile can improve their coverage then maybe I'd consider them.

At least, in hope, this will cause other carriers to lower their rates as well. Even if not to match them, but to be a little more competitive, would be very great.

Is Sprint really offering $70 everything plan on the brand new Hero Android phone ? For $70 do you get unlimited minutes unlimted texts unlimted Internet and e-mail and free roaming ? If true that is over half cheaper monthly than ATT rips me off on my iPhone

Zorachus, it's 450 minutes, unlimited data, texts, MMS, nav. You also get unlimited nights and weekends at 7, and unlimited mobile to mobile for ANY cellular company in the US. Sprint to AT&T, T-Mo, US Cellular, Verizon, etc etc are free minutes.

If T-Mo's 3G was worth a damn I wouldn't have never left for AT&T. The second they rollout their 3G to more places though, see ya iPhone. It's not bad but I don't think I'll miss the $80/month if I can get "more for less". :D

If they get the N900 though... damn. *drool*

I think $50 would be insane awesome :D If it really was unlimited EVERYTHING = minutes, texts, e-mail, internet, roaming across the U.S. all unlimited would eb a killer, fuck I even think $99 for all that would be a sweet deal.

But ATT rape me with tax at $180, that is standard here in Chicago, for the iPhone unlimited everything plan, that's a freaking rip man

Sprints "Simply Everything Plan-Unlimited Anytime Minutes Included" is $99 for unlimited minutes, data, and text

:p

True, but the plan for $70 includes unlimited calling to any cell phone on any provider...450 minutes is more than enough for people that primarily call other cell phones (myself included).

If T-mobile really does do an unlimited EVERYTHING plan for $50 it will be an absolute game breaker. There's simply no way AT&T, VZW, or even Sprint can justify charging $150+/ month ($100 for Sprint) if there's another major player offering the same thing at 1/3 of the price. The coverage may not be as good, but I'd be willing to bet that the $50 price point is going to cause A LOT of people to switch over. As an example, I think on AT&T for $50 you can get 450 minutes w/ rollover (unlimited mobile to mobile, 5000 min nights/weekends), 200 texts, and no data. Comparing the two side by side, it's an absolute no-brainer who to choose.

T-mo isn't focusing on the millions living outside of their specialty. T-mo focuses on major cities, and IN major cities, they're an excellent company with great coverage. There is a glut of people on MetroPCS (zero coverage outside of your city, NO roaming), Boost (iDen, shit data speeds, SMS delays like crazy, bad call quality), etc that T-Mo can consume. I think it's 30 million people on the "local urban" companies that T-Mo can just pillage. And yes, with the devices T-Mo has, it would be a rape, plunder and pillage when those people RUN to their local Magenta dealer.

Dude, if the $50 Unlimited plan is a go, then I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. I'm already a T-Mo customer, but this'd give me an excuse to upgrade to the MyTouch (currently on a Moto U6) and not bitch about adding a data plan.

qft ... I've been on T-Mobile since the VoiceStream days (my SIM card is still blue & green, and my E51's home screen still says VoiceStream), and $50 Unlimited would be freaking brilliant. That would justify my wife's want for a Nokia N97 :)

That brings us to the final tenet of Dark, which has T-Mobile planning a blockbuster $50 all-you-can-eat plan that would undercut its nearest national competitor -- Sprint, with its Simply Everything plan -- by a ridiculous $50 (AT&T's recently-announced unlimited prepaid plan comes in at $60, but it lacks data, the most critical element here). Sounds enticing, doesn't it? Too good to be true, even, but we don't doubt T-Mobile would do it just to shake things up, especially since they've always had a reputation for undercutting the competition.

Unfortunately, it's a fool's game -- and if it happens, we're pretty sure it's going to end in tears. Here's why: Boost Mobile -- operating on Nextel's historically robust network -- had bouts of trouble with the influx of subscriber adds brought about by its own $50 unlimited plan, and that was on a totally different scale: the phones aren't nearly as interesting and 3G data simply doesn't exist. When potential customers realize they can get, say, an N900 or a CLIQ and stream Pandora or last.fm until the cows come home for that same $50, there'll be a run on stores, riots in the streets, overturned cars, the whole nine yards. And that's before 10,000 new customers a day get home, turn on their phones, start downloading apps, make Skype calls, and cause cell sites to spontaneously combust.

Just saw that on engadget.

$50 unlimited everything for the family with the ability to add lines and I'm in for sure.

I've heard mostly headaches about AT&T's 3G with all the congestion from iPhone users. Also since T-Mo is practically rolling out 3G in a market every few days it looks like, and like said earlier by someone i believe, project dark is including some rapid 3g rollouts, maybe even hspa 21. All in all, the $50 unlimited everything alone is keeping me from switching to sprint. Hopefully, as the engadget article pointed out, that it doesn't backfire with all the people that move to T-Mo that quick if they do roll that plan out.

Here's to hoping i guess.

sprint has been the biggest pusher of a network that is designed to stream audio and video. they will be the first to have video chat phones, and their network is consistently faster then other carriers. tmo sucks for streaming, as does att. an unlimited plan from either of those companies wouldnt mean a whole lot when you cant even stream orb effectively.
