how do i remove the product key from one computer and move it to another?
is that even possible? thank you!

you need the sticker from the side of the case (if it's like a Dell or HP there should be a product key on the case) if you have no key sticker you can not transfer the license from computer to computer, it need to have the product key entered during the OS installation as far as i know.

The keys on the sides of computers are OEM keys and are tied to the computer that they are stuck. You can't legally use that key on any other computer but what it's stuck to. You need to purchase either an OEM or Retail key to the computer you want to put the OS on. (The keys do work on other computers, but it's not legal.)

ahemm.... Very Very possible.
Take a razor blade and slowley peel the edge up.. Then work it from side to side untill it pops off. Then reapply with new glue onto new case.

Now if your trying to install the version of windows off of one to another thats a diffrent story. Most likely you can't if the system was bought from hp,dell oem... which means it can only be uesd on one computer at one time.... (one time). Which means you can't take it off and put on another prebuilt computer later legally

To be honest why not just buy windows 7 now? If you have to upgrade.

Also Explain how it's broke we probably can help! :)

Just take your time - Enough said.

I will acknowledge this fact: there are software tools in existence that can extract the product key from your registry. But I won't help you find them.

Anyway, the tool is worthless if your old machine has already bitten the dust.

If you use the key from the sticker, you may have problems activating, because as stated above, that key is tied to the motherboard of your original system. If you're simply replacing the motherboard, you'll need to call in to Microsoft and explain the situation to them in order to activate.
