Processor Thermal Margin Question [Q6700]

I made my first build with the 07 Intel Retail Edge with the Q6700. I have recently installed the Intel Desktop Utilities to take a look at what they had to offer.

When encoding a movie using handbreak I see my Processor Thermal Margin go from mid 30's to 0. And I get a warning about it going to a critical state.

What exactly does this mean? Should I be worried? How can I increase this margin if need be?

I have not details on that motherboard and I have to assume some Intel provided utility is reporting what you see, but experience with Intels chipset spec sheets leads me to think the following.

Your processor is at the point it is asserting a #PROCHOT interupt meaning the cpu is too hot and it is signalling the fans to spin up to 100% in an effort to prevent it from becoming hotter and automatically shutting down (crash).

Should I be worried?
Yes, sort of, while the cpu will shutdown to prevent damage, operating it at these extream temps is not good for it long term.


How can I increase this margin if need be?
You cannot. Improve your cooling and be sure you have installed the heatsink correctly. This should not be happening, I would guess the pushpins for the stock heatsink are not all firmly seated, it takes a LOT of presssure to click them home. So much pressure that I do not recommend doing it with a board mounted in the case as the motherboard flexes too much and you could damage the solder connections under the cpu socket unless you can slide something under the board to support it while attempting to reseat the pins. I recommend you remove the board from the case, set it on a folded towel and with one thumb over the other press the push pins in an X pattern (dont go round in a circle, jump across ) push until it hurts and then push harder. Flip the board over and make sure all pins are evenly pushed through and showing the same amount of "plastic" on the back side. If that does not do it, get some fans for your case or a better case.

Bill, you were right :)

Took a look at my heatsink. There were a few of the screws that weren't completely locked and it was on right. Took it off, put it on and made sure it was locked into place.

The thermal margin went from mid 30's to mid 50's.
