Problems with Xp not seeing a HDD "foreign disk"

I have a friend (NO ITS NOT ME) who has a SATA I as a Master (OS / program) drive, and an IDE for storage. He has formated the SATA drive and on a fresh format the OS (Xp) calls the drive foreign.

What are our options besides disk recovery. Is there something that I'm missing?! I told him to play with jumper settings, but with it being a "foreign disk" there isnt much you can do with the drive in Xp.

Thanks

No dynamic disk in this situation was left UNTOUCHED, it was simply re-introduced the HDD to the freshly formated computer and it showed up as dynamic

**update** he found a utility that converted the disk from dynamic to basic without a format!! problem solved...
