Problems with new PS

I just bought an Antec 500W Neopower power supply. I put it in an older computer of my wifes and it ran for about 2 seconds and shut down. I've moved around the cables in the back and it didn't help. I tried unhooking the CD Rom drive and that got it to run for about 15 seconds but then it shut down. It is an old e-machine with an AMD processor. When I start it, the processor fan and fan in back of the comp all run. Any idea what the problem is?

Are you sure that you plugged in all of the necessary power connectors?
Have you tried the paperclip trick?
Have you tried the PSU on another system?

I wrote down everything I unplugged on the old PSU and plugged it all back in with the new one.
I will try that paper clip trick right now, but the PSU does fire up, it just shuts down right away.
No, I haven't tried the PSU in another system yet.

It could be an old system where the CPU is powered from the +5V & the loads provided are not compatible with the new Antec.

It is not, it is an A64.

The computer is about 4 years old. About half the time that I have the CDRom drive unhooked the system runs fine. The next time when I try and hook up the CDRom drive it shuts down right away again.

Try the PSU in another system. Also try another CD Drive

I tried the PSU in another computer and it works just fine. Both of the computers have the same kind of processor, AMD Athlon 64. Is is possible there could be something different with the mobo? I ain't no computer expert so I'm just throwing guesses out there?

Forget my "Older PSU's" post, all A64 mobo's use the +12V rail to power the CPU.

If the PSU worked fine in another system, then it could be a mobo problem. Now that I think about it, it wouldn't surprise me if it was a mobo problem considering that it's an eMachines systems.

I could have used that paperclip trick a few months ago, I ended up testing it with the system on and stabbing my multimeter down the back of the pin holes.

Thanks for that, it will be of great use to me in the future.
