I recently built a system for a friend.

Parts include:
Abit AN8-v
paired Corsair XMS 1GB
Athlon64 3000+
WD 200GB IDE HDD
Radeon X800

When I first built it it ran great. After a couple weeks it started to randomly reset... INSTANTLY. There was a BSOD with text but could never read it, it was onscreen too short a time.
I try reinstalling windows.. problem keeps getting worse.
Eventually the power supply dies.
I give him a known good antec 350 watt one I used for my TV box.
Same reboot problem.
Test hard drive..FULL test, including write zeroes etc... it passes
swap out video card. same problem
swap out ram.. same problem
Try different ram slots with and without the pairing used.. same problem
Order same mobo again, thinking when the PS fried it cooked the mobo.
new mobo gives post code 90... something to do with uguru from what I gather.
Next day it boots great.
reinstall windows. goes great till it's sitting at desktop waiting for me to install video and chipset drivers.
resets again like the initial problem.
I decide to screw with the ram slots and send the guy home with a prayer.

He calls me today.. says it won't boot. NEW post code 04
He says he moved the ram and we figure out he installed it loose.
I'm thinking the fool fried the ram now.

I'm out of ideas..... anyone?

thanks so much!

i read alot of forums and i remember reading on this post code.more times than not it was mobo related.another possible cause was cpu had too much pressure on it from the cpu cooler.the heatsinks ive installed i have noticed some are very hard to turn the lever to tighten the heatsink on the cpu.that was mentioned as a possible cause, something about the board bowing or something.but as i remember the problem very well may have been a bad motherboard.there is posts on this as i remember on abits site and pc perspective also.it seems this was common in the forums about a month or possible a little longer than that.i was considering the an8 ultra at the time and i read numerous complaints on this code 04.id be suspecting possible motherboard as i know from what i read that replacing it fixed the problem more times than not.at first people were trying ram,but cpu tension and motherboard come to mind.........good luck and let us know what fixes yours.......

I'm pretty sure I read about this somewhere, all you need to do is update the bios.

Hmm ok.

although this is the second motherboard.

I'll have to try to update bios.. but how can I if it won't boot?
