I have a 320gb seagate free agent pro and am having problems hooking it up with eSATA. (motherboard is ABIT NF7-s) I had it hooked up with usb for a couple weeks but now im trying to hook it up with this port...

and this cable...

I hooked everything up plugged the esata cable in for the first time when the drive was active and computer was on, it was not recognized. I restarted the computer while leaving the drive on and it was not recognized. I searched and found something that said you need to power up the drive at startup... didnt work. The drive will power up during boot while only connected though esata but wont if the OS is already running, so the connection is obviously there.
So do i need to go do something in the bios or elswhare to get this thing working? Thanks

bump... can someone throw me a bone on this one. Since the first post ive checked all the connections and jiggled the hell out of them a few times with no success. After looking around i found someone with a similar hookup who said that seagate told him he would need a esata port of this breed... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815283005
instead of one that connects to a sata port on the motherboard. Then again there are reviews on the rosewill one that i have that said it worked for their free agent pro?!?!?! So im all confused now. Again, if you can give me any tips that might work they would be greatly appreciated.

Coupla thoughts here. Your MB's SATA ports are 150 MB/s. Sometimes they will not recognize SATA 300GB/s, like your Free Agent Pro.
You have your eSATA connected to a regular SATA port. If your MB does "see it", hot swapping your external drive will still not be possible. This means, your external drive must be powered on when your machine is booted or it won't be recognized.
To use all the features of eSATA, get a 300 MB/s PCI or PCIe SATA controller card with eSATA port(s).
Hope this helps a little.;)
