Problems running F@H GPU2 client on two GPUs

Hey guys, I'm trying to run the F@H GPU2 client on the machine in my sig.

I can successfully do it on my GTS250 (in the primary PCI-E slot).

However, after following the instructions for setting up a second GPU2 program (from the guides section on the forums), it still will not let me run it on my 8800GTS 320.

When I setup the second client, I go to run it and it shows that it is running under the GTS250, just like the first client.

Again, I've followed the instructions exactly, from creating the new folder in the Roaming folder, making the proper shortcuts, etc etc.

My GTS250 is my primary video card and is running one LCD monitor. The secondary video card is an 8800GTS 320MB and is running the second LCD monitor.

Is there any way I can fix this? Please help! I'd like to just leave this rig on folding 24/7, but unless I can get this to work, it's not worth it to me to run it all the time.

All thanks in advance! :)

You have to add the -gpu 0 flag to the first client and -gpu 1 to the second. That should force the clients to run on two separate cards.

Oh I did do that! It didn't work at all!

Like I said, I followed the directions exactly!

Would disabling the 8800GTS320 as a PhysX card help the situation?

My drivers are 190.38.

Try it. I had mine on as physx but those were much older drivers, things may have changed

Other than that, Id say just go back and go thru each step and redo it, I've had to do that a few times on my 3 and 4 card rigs

Also, reboot. Not sure why, but it fixed a similar problem I once had

Edit - damn! Beat me to it LOL

Yes, try disabling it as a PhysX card and see if that helps.

Ok, I disabled it, still no dice. Also, does it matter if I run the NVIDIA GPU2 client or just the regular one, it doesn't matter to me.

oops... boy am I stupid.

I tried (-gpu 1) that as a 'fix' for getting my single card to fold... (don't trust anybody!... but [H])

Try 1 and 2, not 0 and 1. (for the GPU flag).

Also, try just using the 8800gts, see if it works then.

My bet is on bad drivers, but incase if it isn't, your mobo might be doing something wierd to the second PCIE slot.

If you get the GUI client then you need the nVidia version. The console GPU client only has one version for both ATI and nVidia.

Do you have your desktop extended to the other card? And are you using a dummy plug (or have a monitor connected to the second card)? You need that with Vista.

Thank you very much. I'm trying your methods now.

Ok, awesome, switching the tags from 0 and 1 to 1 and 2 seemed to work. I'm going to update my drivers for both cards now and will let you know what happens.

Ok, I've gotten further, but it now gives me this error message when I go to run the 8800GTS320:

At present your GPU is not supported or you need a current driver. You may wish to consider running our standard client, which you can download at folding.stanford.edu.

Ok, the GTS250 runs just fine, but the 8800GTS320 just won't do it. Their site says that the G80 is supported, and I'm running the latest Vista x86 NVIDIA drivers right now.

Add the -forcegpu nvidia_g80 flag.

Also, make sure each client has it's own machine ID.

Did that, but again, it just runs the client under the GTS250 again.

With just the -gpu 2 argument, I still get the driver error.

Yeah, the GTS250 is currently set as M.ID 1, since when the other client starts, it automatically goes to 2.

Can you remove the GTS250, and fold with just the 8800gts? (try slot placement, too - it makes a difference on many OEM boards, dunno why).

It would allow us to see if it is just a driver issue / hardware SLI messup (luckly, my chipset doesn't support it at all), as SLI might be automatically enabled in the BIOS on some systems.

Also, SLI can be done via the drivers, even without a bridge... So check that, too.

Ok, my in my BIOS, when going to "dual video card" mode, the bottom PCI-E port becomes enabled and both PCI-E 16x slots go to 8x. I don't however, have SLI enabled.

I've also folded on the 8800GTS320 when it was by itself in this machine before (a few months back), so I know it shouldn't be a hardware issue.

There are only two PCI-E 16x slots on this board. I can swap the cards around to see if it makes a difference. Hang with me for a bit and I'll see what happens.

Okay, I'm back (see how I have so many posts, now?).

lol, no worries.

Ok, so here's what I did:

Slot 1: 8800GTS320
Slot 2: 9600GT (the GTS250 wouldn't physically fit and it's too late for a mod job)

So, the 8800GTS is folding just fine, no driver issue. However, now it states the 9600GT is having the same "driver" problem that I mentioned before.

So we now know that the 8800GTS320 can fold just fine (and I know the 9600GT can when it is in the primary slot).

There is no way to disable SLI in the bios. The only three options are:
Single Video Card
Dual Video Card (which I'm running)
Auto (just auto-detects how many cards are in).

rawr

What is your motherboard?

I know this will be a late post, unless if your timezone is different!

Ok, put the GTS250 back in Slot 1 and the furnace *cough* I mean 8800GTS320 into Slot 2.

I activate client 1, the GTS250 works fine. I activate client 2, "driver" error!

I double checked that I did everything right. It may come down to what you said, about it being a hardware/SLI error. But I've never seen this happen on any games or other 3D/CUDA/SP apps before now.

Oops, looks like a post lag :).

What is your motherboard model? I might be able to help on that avenue!

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium

It's the model right after that silly card-switch and the first model to switch SLI on/off via the BIOS without the use of the jumpers or card-switch.

The BIOS has also been flashed to the latest update (2005, lol).

From what I remember, non SLI mode puts the cards at:
16x and 1x,
while SLI mode puts both at 8x.

SLI mode, apparently, is soley controlled by the drivers!? (sorry, not a nVIdia SLI owner here!)

Is there any way to check?

haha, that's the way it should be in non-SLI mode, but if I remember correctly, the mobo puts it at 16x in slot 1 and disables slot 2 completely. let me do a restart and take a look at what happens just to make sure.

SLI via the drivers also isn't possible with these two cards, so it's not a driver/software issue for SLI.

What I meant: is has several BIOS updates 'till 2007, listed under Vistax64 and 'other' for floppy BIOS update,

Mine has 1009. The other two were kinda flaky if I remember right, not to mention they were just to add compatibility, meh.

Also, just tested out the hardware.

Auto: just makes both cards go to 8x if two are in
Single: makes slot 1 go to 16x and slot 2 is disabled (won't even show up in GPU-Z or device manager at all)
Dual: makes both cards go to 8x

Check GPUz on the loads of both GPU, as it may be inadvertently folding still.

Other then that, Good night!

I will let this bake over in my head, as it's 1am here...

Awesome, thanks for all of your help! :)

I will be on later tonight if anyone would like to help me! I'm really excited about settinig up multiple GPUs as well as other folding machines. F@[H] ftw!

Thanks again for everyone's help.:)

Ok, I'm back and ready for action! Time to get this 8800GTS320 (or 9600GT) into some folding action!

So, the deal is the same as last night, it just states that it's a driver issue with whatever video card is in slot 2. Whatever card is in slot 1 works great and is folding as I type.

What it means, is check to see if your 8800gts/9600gt will fold together...

Ok, no they won't. I tried this last night, with the 8800GTS320 in Slot 1 (it worked) and the 9600GT in Slot 2 (it didn't work, same driver issue).

I think I get what he's saying about the cards differing SP amount, but it still doesn't explain the fact that any GPU in Slot 2 won't work at all regardless of what is paired. hmm

This is a tough one, but totally worth it to try and get it working!

Sorry, I'm currenty combing over the official folding forums for help...

looks like another late night for me (though... I never sleep well, anyways ;))

hmmm... a bit of randomness on that forum suggests the second GPU client has to be the console version.

Thanks, I really appreciate your help. This is a really tough challenge, and I know that it's normally not this hard to setup. I'm really thinking it's something with the motherboard though.

I'll keep testing out different combinations of hardware in the mean time.
