Problem with new cpu

Recently i bought a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz (533 fsb) for my Asus P4S533 mobo which supposedly supports this cpu. After installation, everything seemed to be just fine until i started noticing my mouse cursor was incredibly jittery. I figured i could live with it but it's become something that actually hinders my work efforts.
I've updated the bios to the lastest version, tried two different sets of ram, two different hard drives (running in DMA mode) each with a new installation of win xp pro, removed cards, disabled different things in the bios, updated drivers for the sis chipset... all of which have done nothing to help the problem.

This has happened before with new hardware installations and the way i solved it last time was to format and reinstall; this is no longer fixing the problem.

My setup:
P4 2.8 ghz 533 fsb
Asus P4S533
PNY PC2700 512 mb
Maxtor 160 gig (7200, 9.3 ms)
GF4 TI 4400
Sound Blaster Audigy - Gamer
Crappy HP CD-r
DVD drive

appreciate any help at all :)
Thanks.

I'd say that has absolutely nothing to do with a new cpu, but rather either the motherboard or the mouse itself. Do you have another mouse to test if the motherboard port functions? Chances are, it's fine. Instead, save yourself the effort of trouble shooting and...lol spend 10 bucks on a new mouse. If it's wireless the batteries might be going low, or if it has a ball, is it clean (the ball and the rollers). If it requires special drivers, aka for extra buttons or whatever, reinstall them to the latest version. But the problem is your mouse, not your new processor.

damn, should've mentioned that. It's a intellimouse explorer 3 (usb), i've tried different USB ports, used an PS/2 adapter and tried another mouse. Problem still exists. However, both mice are optical and i haven't tried out a regular ball mouse...i don't think it'll help the problem. :(

Sounds like moboard controller was fried from ESD when you put that cpu in..

i was going to say that. u probably fired that with static. gotta ground ya self before u do anything.

i figured if there was any ESD of any kind, the likelihood of even getting the machine to boot is very low. However, i do live in hawaii and ESD build up is pretty rare here.
I have a feeling it has something to do with the bios :-/

did that too :(
I just looked at the usb bandwidth usage in device manage: 25%...hmm that can't be normal..shouldn't be 10%?

regardless, it is most likely the motherboard whcih has dead parts on it, RMA it, if you think it's the bios reset the bios and then if it still doesn't work, flash to the newest bios upgrade and if that still doesnt fix the problem, RMAing is the only option.
