Problem on start up

I am having a problem where I start my computer it starts it goes to the windows xp loading screen then it restarts at the motherboard screen again. I know it isn't my ram, motherboard or processor because they are all new and it also did this with my last rig. It only gives me this problems on certain occasion. The only two things that it could be is my harddrive or my psu. The harddrive I brought about a year ago so I can't see that being the problem. The only thing it could be is my psu. The psu is a coolmax cx-550B it has two 12v rails 18 amps each 550watts. (I know not a good brand) I only am running one harddrive, one sata dvd burner and the rest of my specs are in my sig. I am just trying to narrow my problem down so tell me what you think is wrong.

EDIT: I went back to stock speeds and it is still giving me a problem.
 
bump anyone got any ideas? I gotta replace either harddrive or psu which one because I can't do both atm the second one will have to wait a month or so.
 
I was going to ask the same thing, did you do a reinstall of windows when you transferred components?
 
When I got my new stuff I did a complete reinstall so I don't get how a install could become corrupt twice in a row. When I started my computer this morning it hung at the Welcome screen for about 10 seconds then I got to desktop and had a error saying that there was a error with windows.exe or something.
 
I have a multimeter but how would I do that?
EDIT:I just used a multimeter and tested it my 12v is at 11.96 5v is at 5.05 my 3.3 is at 3.33 so I don't get the problem. I am getting 117.69vac from the wall so I don't get my problem. Could it be my harddrive? I just got it a year ago so I don't see how thats possible.
EDIT 2: I did a harddrive test that is in speed fan and it says everything is good.
 
Well I believe it is my power supply so I am looking at these powersupplys tell me which one I should get. Also I want to make sure it can't be anything else so anyone think it could be my harddrive?The psu are the best I can find in my price range so tell me which one you think or if you think it could be something else in my system.

It very well could be that your computer is BSODing during start up and you would never know if you didn't turn off the automatic restart. Turn that that off (right click my computer > properties > Advanced > Settings under startup and recovery > uncheck automatically restart and apply the settings). Report back if you get an error screen now during start up.

Also check you're ram with memtest even though its new just in case.

If it is your power supply I would get this one.

OK I am running memtest overnight and I was looking at that powersupply and it seems only to have a 8 pin cpu pin that doesn't break into two 4 pins which means it won't work on my motherboard because there are caps in the way but if anyone can tell other wise that is what I will get. Also It kind of sucks because it only crash on certain occasions. But I will see if I can make it crash.
 
It should either break into two (which it seems like it doesn't) or come with an adaptor.

It's what I'd choose too.

This review says it breaks away into 2 4pins. Newegg also says its a 4+4 pin connector.
 
Another recommendation for the Corsair PSU.

Oh and make sure that you run Memtest on each stick of RAM separately since this tells you whether one or two sticks are screwed up.
 
I was looking at that psu I will get it if someone can confirm it breaks into a 4 pin from the 8 pin. Also I ran memtest 86 or something that is built right into my motherboard for 8plus hours and it came back clean so it isn't my memory. So now I am almost certain it is my psu. I also tried to force an error to happen by putting my overclock back on but it has yet to happen again. Thou I did get an error saying windows had recovered from a from a serious error. All Corsair PSUs have either an 8pin and a 4pin or an 8pin that breaks in half for a 4pin.
 
OK thank you then that looks like thats the psu I will be getting, thank you for the help redbeard. I am also thinking of updating my bios and reinstalling windows.
 
LOL! You're daft. Since when does new parts mean non-defective/compatible parts.

Did you disable restart on error in system properties? I'd be willing to bet the problem is RAM.
 
Yeah I did disable the restart, I just got an error saying 0X0000007E Thou I can't see why it would be my memory I did 8 hours on memtest and then stopped it because there where no errors. I am going to do a bios upgrade to see if that helps any.
 
Since the new PSU is on order, I'm going to wish you luck on that resolving the problem. ;-)
 
Well I was reinstalling my video card drivers and well it seems that my motherboard died. (yeah I know) I was installing nvidia drivers and I got blue screen of death with this error 0X00000050 so I held the power button in till it turned off. I then went to turn on my computer the fans turn on, my dvd burners light comes on but my computer power light doesn't come on. My monitor also never came on. I tried booting with one stick of ram nothing then did the same thing with the other stick of ram. So I am wondering if you also think it's my motherboard. I was also running at stock speeds no overclocks. So anyone think it could be anything else besides my moterhboard? could it be my processor? my ram? Please I need help I want to try and send the stuff back to newegg for a replacement before it is to late.

EDIT: if a mod or admin sees this close the thread I am making a new topic in the moterhboard section of the forums.
