[Price mistake] NEC MultiSync 40" LCD Monitor $107. You Save: $2,191.01 (95.30%)

I can recall countless times that I have been walking into a retail store, only to see a CORRECTION to an advertisement MISPRINT taped to the front door.

In those instances, the retail store doesn't honor the incorrect pricing either.

So tired of seeing the "wah, wah" bitchin' and cryin' when these pricing errors get canceled.

So you're telling me that if you walked into Best Buy, saw a 40" LCD price marked at $107, and there was no notice of a price correction when you walked in the door that you wouldn't try to buy it?

I recieved confirmation of order, no cancellations, and my bank account has not been touched. Will see.

If it was a 200 dollar LCD.. and that is the price, in arkansas they are legally obligated to make the sale. Sorry.

If it was a 4,000 dollar LCD... no way, obvious mistake. Or if it was supposed to be priced 1107.80 and the price is 110.78... you get the picture.

I'm ready to post a very negative rating on reseller ratings when they inevitably cancel my order.

They deserve some kind of punishment for this. You know, I'm almost certain they do this intentionally as a strategy to draw attention to their shithole site.

Would you bother to post a positive review if they did ship it?

You have a point and yes I will. Doubtful its going to happen; if I see no charge to my bank account I am going to walk away. If something would come of this, as in a deceptive "pricing mistake" to drive up traffic I would join the class action.

It's a pricing mistake... I don't get where this notion of "driving up traffic" came from, but I really doubt companies are wasting time getting a few thousand hits when they know morons like you are going to post negative reviews on reseller ratings.

It's amazing you guys even have time for this shit.

No kidding, but it's the same whiny brats that most retail outlets really could care less about keeping as a customer. It doesn't help that they are probably broke as well.

I don't get how anyone could get pissed off about them canceling your order you knew it was a mistake when you ordered it....

I don't see why they should have to honor a price that was clearly put up by mistake.

Wrong. You have to agree to their "terms and conditions" when you place an order. That is part of the "contract" you agree to. The terms state:

Pricing and Typographical Errors
Due to the fast pace of the computer and consumer products industries, all prices are subject to change without notice. We make every effort to provide you the most accurate, up-to-the-minute information. Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items on our web site may be mis-priced.

In the event a product is listed at an incorrect price due to typographical, photographic, or technical error or error in pricing information received from our suppliers, eCOST.com shall have the right to refuse or cancel any orders placed for product listed at the incorrect price.

If an item's correct price is lower than our stated price, we will charge the lower amount and ship you the item.
If an item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we will cancel your order and notify you of the price error and order cancellation. You will, of course, have an opportunity to purchase the item at the correct price, if you so wish.
While we make every attempt to verify prices before charging your credit card, eCOST.com shall have the right to refuse or cancel any orders placed on mis-priced product whether or not the order has been confirmed and your credit card charged. If your credit card has already been charged for the purchase and your order is canceled, eCOST.com shall immediately issue a credit to your credit card account in the amount of the incorrect price.

We believe that day-in, day-out, our pricing is very attractive relative to our competition. Combined with our product assortment, product availability and service level, we believe that we offer a compelling shopping experience. With that in mind, we do not "match" competitor's pricing, offer price protection, or provide "quantity quotes."

They have every right to cancel an order for even a $.01 pricing mistake because you agree to that when you place the order. It's only our American sense of entitlement that makes us feel like we were somehow wronged and deserve more. The fact of the matter is, you agreed to the terms, and the terms say they don't owe you shit.

Entitlement? Take that glenn beck shit to the soapbox.

The same way HOA's will take someones $300,000 home for not paying $1000 worth of annual dues. Every buisness entity is in buisness to make money. If they do not play by the rules I make every attempt to hammer them into the dust because by nature they do the exact same thing to the consumer.

I did some math, if 5,000 people placed orders for that 162 dollar monitor this company would have about 800,000 dollars of float money to play with between the time orders are cancelled and money is returned. Who really knows if this is a mistake or a way to generate customers and some money in micro interest? They now have my information and I am sure that my inbox will soon be full of "great offers" that I do not need.

I could see pricing mistakes in 1996 or 2003 or even now from mom and pop brick and mortars that have an amazon or ebay store. From a technology etailer in this day and age there is no excuse. EVERY credible ecommerce suite has safeguards put in for pricing mistakes. Which leads me back to this A %93 off sale on a 1500 dollar item should have set someones pager off BEFORE it posted to the public. If they are forced to honor the sales of the in-stock item, then possibly I fall into the ammount that was in-stock that will be shipped. Ecost could be in worse trouble if they were shipping to Taiwan.

I hope someone pushes this for the in-stock monitors as a lesson learned. Personally I do not care if I was one of the first, as far as I am concerned I bought a raffle ticket. The only way companies can be punished for bad behavior is by taking money from them. Thats the free market. Possibly since I have not received anything about a cancellation their lawyers are finding out PA State law for ecommerce, and if they have to honor it, no matter what their TOS is.

Forcibly taking money from someone ie: stealing, is not the free market. That is what criminals do.

So every business lawsuit is between criminals? Glad you are proving my point. Your drunk ass fucks up my lawn and mailbox you are paying for it.

Would you bother to post a positive review if they did ship it?
Yes, I would have. I've left many reviews on reseller ratings in the last eight years, nearly all of them positive. Giving someone a positive/negative rating is a small gesture, but it's effective in great numbers. Ecost's behavior is reflected through their current rating.

I am only speculating as to why they do this from time to time when I feel it's to draw attention to their site and get the site's name into your memory, but I've seen it many times from online stores.

Most business people will tell you that the way to get people into your store is to give something away or sell it cheap...ecost is likely following the same principle, except denying people what they were offered.

I think someone earlier in the thread mistook this for me being mad or childish, but I'm just holding a retailer accountable for shady business tactics. Everyone makes mistakes, yes, but everyone should also be accountable for their mistakes. I know if I screwed up at work all the time, they wouldn't just go "oh, everyone makes mistakes" and never say anything about it.

These deals are entered in by humans. Humans make mistakes. But I'm sure you're perfect and any business you would run would also have perfect employees right?

Shit happens. They're not going to honor a $1000 pricing mistake just because someone like yourself feels entitled to rip off companies while justifying it with comments like "The same way HOA's will take someones $300,000 home for not paying $1000 worth of annual dues."

Entitled again...

I did get my cancellation so if I never see anything from ecost then no harm no foul. If they use my email address to send me stupid offers then I give a bad rating with an explanation why.

Lawsuits and regulations are the only way to keep companies in line. If not someone would be selling you sawdust in a pill for a dietary supplement. There are two types of people who have antisocial disorders. The stupid ones that end up in prison and the smart ones who end up on wall street.

Keep rah-rahing for business and blaming your life's shortcomings on some other group of people. Support your "entitlement boys" by buying their products.

Besides, ecost was selling this monitor at twice the market price to begin with. Its not like anyone was going to buy it anyways.

So every business lawsuit is between criminals? Glad you are proving my point. Your drunk ass fucks up my lawn and mailbox you are paying for it.

I don't drink, but nice try.

Did Ecost violate your life, liberty, or property? The answer is no. Now, if they had actually took your money and didn't give it back or already spent it then you'd have a leg to stand on. As it is now you do not. Initiating force is never the answer.

.

This is just a dumb statement, with interest rates where they are (very close to zero), a few days float money is irrelevant. They would not risk all the bad publicity to make a few dollars in interest. Also with almost all orders done through credit card, do they even still get float money.

Someone said it best here, Americans feel like they have entitlement. I remember in Europe I tried walking up a wet fountain in a mall and slipped down, the first thing I said was I was going to sue, even tough I didn't get hurt.
It was a joke, but all the europeans I told it to said your the idiot that tried to walk up a wet fountain. A year later I did notice a warning sign that was not there when I slipped.

You might want to do some more math. It generally takes a day or two for a company's credit card processor to deposit credit card sales into a company's bank account. Factor in that the credit card processor charges a fee based on the number of transactions and that savings accounts pay about 0.5% interest and such a scam would probably end up costing a company money in the end. Even factoring out the credit card fees and using your highly inflated sales, the interest earned over the three days the money might sit in a bank account is all of $33.33 ($800,000 * .005 * 3/360).

There are also costs involved to correct the mistake and the potentially bad goodwill that can come about from the mistake. So really any company that has any sort of business sense will do everything in its power to avoid a pricing error. But, mistakes happen and that's a part of life.

Dear Customer,

We sincerely apologize for the pricing error.

Unfortunately, the error was a result of an incorrect price (sent to eCOST) in an automated supplier feed. In an effort to minimize the inconvenience to our customers, all orders with incorrect pricing, were canceled as quickly as possible.

Best Regards,

Nice for them to apologize for someone else's mistake. Lets see if this is the last email I get from them. To your point weuntouchable we both do not know if the 5000 is relative or not, considering consumer spending for electronics in 2007 was 129 billion dollars.

How I am feeling about this depends on whether they bother me any more with anything. If I am put on some internal mailing list then I will file some nasty review because as far as I am concerned ecost then has befitted from my business that they cancelled. Along with everyone else who would have never visited their site or gave any personal information except for the reason of buying a barnstormer 97 percent off deal.

I decided to price compare something on ecost with newegg so I found one of the first comparable items on the web sites, which was a Samsung p2570HD 24.6 inch widescreen monitor. I clicked on this ecost product because it had a blinky "countdown bargain" icon next to it. Then I searched that model number out on newegg.

here is the ecost:

http://www.ecost.com/prod/Monitors+...+HDTV+-+P2570HD/55237574.aspx?navid=155442295

here is newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001335&Tpk=p2570hd

neweggs price is within 6 dollars to your door, new vs refurbished, everyday vs "bargain countdown".

I had an idiot job in college that was in every way the same as the movie "tinmen". The sales manager called us in one day to talk about a new way to price-drop. He holds up to us 25 marketing directors (the company had no "salesman" we had 25 "marketing directors") this stupid piece of paper that resembled a 100 dollar bill. This he tells us is a "100 dollar rebate" from the window manufacturer. We were to get a handful and use them to drop price if people did not want to pay our full price. I asked how we were supposed to go about initiating this type of price drop and he replies "just tell them you forgot about it until right then." Great so we are not shifty; we are morons. Oops said that aloud. Good for a laugh around the conference table, and at that point I did not care because I was sick of the job. There is no care or compassion, there is money and where there wasn't money it was our job to show people how to squeeze a window payment into their budget. We would send off the paperwork for second and third mortgages to add a window payment. Senior citizens and home lines of credit. All sorts of bad. There was no set price for our windows, I had a number in my head about 15 to 20 minutes after meeting with the family. After a two hour demonstration and "walk around estimate" I would spend at least two minutes tapping on a calculator looking at scrawled numbers pretending to do something, and then show a price. When that number was too high I would look for price drops like a "300 dollar cleanup fee" where the contractor cleans up and not a cleaning service. Truth was there was never a cleaning service or anything else we would make up as we moved drops from what we thought would be a sale towards a figure where the company says the price(our internal price in my head) is too low to do business. As part of that show I would call a co-worker, "the company president", to ask for a price drop. Usually that co worker was in another house with other customers waiting for a call from "the company president". We would carry on a conversation through ourselves, speaking nonsense that was scripted. Both of us would be talking about the nice neighborhood for our "model home" at each other while not listening to the other person. I am satisfied that company is now out of business and there are consumer protection laws that are in place to stop those type of home improvement sales (here at least). That job killed my outlook on business in general, and it took years to find good out there.

This is precisely why I do not put anything past anyone. I know the nature of people. Lets see if those of us who took the bait end up on another mailing list.

Mine got canceled but paypal still hasn't refunded the money yet, says pending. I called and they told me it can take 3 days for paypal to refund the money.

I asked them why my order was canceled.

8/03/10

Dear Mr. X

Thank you for visiting eCOST.com.

We have reviewed your order and found that your order was already cancelled because the product you purchased was listed at an incorrect price due to typographical, photographic, technical error or error in pricing information received from our suppliers. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

As per our Policy:

“While we make every attempt to verify prices before charging your credit card, eCOST.com shall have the right to refuse or cancel any orders placed on mis-priced product whether or not the order has been confirmed and your credit card charged. If your credit card has already been charged for the purchase and your order is canceled, eCOST.com shall immediately issue a credit to your credit card account in the amount of the incorrect price.”

http://www.ecost.com/Helpdesk/Ordering.aspx#b

Since the order was cancelled, eCOST.com doesn’t charge any amount on your account. What you are seeing is just a pre-authorization amount reserved for eCOST purchase. Since no order will be shipping out, this amount will eventually release in 24-48 hours.

However, if this had not taken place, we also advice a 3-10day turn around period as processing by Issuing Banks vary.

If you have further questions or concerns, please call our Customer Service Center at 1-877-888-2678 from Monday - Friday (7:00am - 8:00pm CST) and Saturday (12:00pm - 8:00pm CST) and one of our agents will be more than happy to handle your concern.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Sincerely,

Customer Care Specialist

anyone else who ordered that monitor get an email for a "super sale"?

here is what I am reading now, its a law firm that gives pointers on protecting ecommerce sites from pricing errors:

http://www.lctjournal.washington.edu/vol1/a002groebner.html

You can call it what you want, but they sent me an unwanted email - which they would not have if I had not given them personal information for a purchase confirmation. That is proof to me that they benefited from this transaction cancellation.

Before the business apologists jump about how difficult it is to remove an email or whatever technology feat needed to be completed before an auto mailer sent me this at 5:22AM this morning; I don't care. They should have done it, whatever it was. It seems that they have a bad habit of pricing mistakes by the hundreds of dollars in the recent time frame.

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/eCost

Besides this experience with ecost, I have never visited the site and knew nothing about them other than that they were based in California. With so many mistakes in such a short time they sound like they are either completely incompetent or taking advantage of internet law. I might send a detailed email to the state authorities in california, dependent on what else unfolds.

lol, as a kid if we were to walk somewhere like that and fall my pops would probably slap us upside the head and say not to do that.
