Price Gouging the PS3

I received an email from ebgames today, regarding the "Online Pre-Order" of the smaller, 20 gig. (MSRP $499), bundle. Now that bundle does include a few extras, but when I look at the grand total of $994.28 then I can truly justify not wanting to be a guinea for first releases. Seems while Sony is undercutting themselves on the price/hardware costs for the first few years the retail chains (and ebay resellers) plan to make mint.

Share your stories of any over-priced or over-zealous entrepreneurs. Heck, even if you think this and other prices like it are just, explain your reasoning (other then, " I want it".) I don't believe any man(or women) should tell another man (or women) what to do with their hard earned money; unless they either a) pay the person to or b) ask the persons advice. But I would like to know if the market (read: consumers) will just STFU and 'pay the piper', no matter how high prices for these types of items sore to. Twenty years of consoles and we have seen prices rise nearly 10x's what they once wore. Another 20+ and we could see Consoles reach the $10k price point.

I saw a monster PS3 HDMI cable for $100 on amazon this morning. I always knew monster were overpriced but, damn.

my advise

if you really want to pursue this

get a hold of ebgame HQ and ask them about pricing policy/bundle packaging. More than likely it is along the same lines as BBY policy in no such thing should happen but they might actually not dictate to the stores how to sell.

Monster Cable... nuff said ;)

Fry's is doing the same thing. PS3 bundle for sale at $1079. It has 8 games but it's the cheaper version of the PS3. Did you really expect anything else with the short supply?

Im sorry, you all may disagree with me. However, I think that the price of the PS3 is just rediculous. I would rather spend $250 on a Nintendo Wii and get a more interesting gameplay. Then pay $600 just for some beefed up graphics. You wan't beefed up graphics play a game on a computer. That's just my 2¢.

Not alot? I paid $768 shipped for my setup. And it runs all the games out there pretty damn good. I would have gotten the 7950GTX because it was cheaper than the card I have. I did not see it until after I ordered my computer. $168 more for a computer that you can use for many different things not just games. or pay $600 for an overrated console? I know alot of you will disagree with me but thats just how I feel.

PCs are much more flexable. Aren't PS3's running on a video card similiar to a 7800GT? You could configure a system with a 7800GT that would match the performance of a PS3 and do a lot more than that.

Whens the last time you had a vanilla console that gave you hours of free p0rn? :D

600-700 dollars will build you a fully functional PC that will have better graphics than a PS3 or 360 (no monitor but neither does a ps3)

Yeah I mean I just don't see it logical to pay that much for a console its a little outrageous.

I thought after the whole x360 bundle fiasco, EBHQ was staying away from that stuff.
I was one of those people who were bumped on my preorder by some ass who got a 1000+$ bundle.... :S

$1079 was for the 60gb version. the 20gb version cost somewhere around 998.

the bad part about this is they cut people out of their initial preorders to later put the systems up online. lol.

Also, if you already have a PC, the cost is only a graphics card update. For $600 you're in 8800gtx territory which is much, much better than the ps3.

If you want the bluray movies, set aside $200 for a bluray drive and you still have $400 for a X1900 or 8800gts.

Just my opinion though.

In all fairness, you can install Linux onto the PS3 to meet all your productivity needs. For gaming, I also highly doubt a $768 PC can compete with a system designed specifically for gaming - 360 or PS3. If you're looking for more than just a console, I think it makes the $600 more justifiable.

not really price gouging though

8 games @ 50$ = 400$..

are the PS3 going to be like the XBX360s? if so 8 games @ 60$ = 480$.. (ouch!)

add that to the PS3 console + extra's and youre easily at 1000$..

If you say so? Because my setup can run pretty much anything on high flawlessly. I run HL2, BF2, WoW(not much though), Oblivion, and FEAR most on as high as possible and they are beautiful. No hickups. Except for an occasional spike in BF2 otherwise... nothing. So how can you doubt that?

You obviously can't compare games that don't exist on the console (i.e. HL2, BF2, WoW), it's like comparing GoW or Resistance: Fall of Man to a PC title. If you google PC vs. 360 comparisons for multi platform games such as Oblivion, F.E.A.R., Prey, and etc, in many cases the high end machines fair better (higher resolutions, maybe better graphics), but similarly priced machines can't compete even at today's prices.

The cost of a PC isn't just hardware, you need to tack on at least the cost of the OS. Basing an argument on a pirated OS is similar to basing an argument on a shoplifted console.

Plus if you want a HD-DVD drive on your 360, you have to tack on another 200 also, bringing it to around the PS3 price. Will be cheaper without of course, but for a comparable setup to the sony console, it's about even imho.
Rather wait awhile till they get the bugs worked out though on the PS3 till i get one, unless i can find a really terrific deal on it. (Yeah right...hehe)

I still remember when the Atari 2600 was released and my father bought it for a whopping $120.. A lot of dough back then.. They gouged at release time even then.. Not gouging really, just the stores taking advantage of the overly impatient people of the world.. Wait till after Christmas, they will most likely be reasonably priced by then...
Early adopters really have no right to complain about price.. High prices is usually one of the costs of early adoption..
