I'm helping a friend assemble a quiet rig for video encoding/rendring.

We scored a D975XBX for cheap and opted for DDR2-800 instead of DDR2-667.

For cooling, we went for a Scythe Infinity.

Now I don't know which CPU to recommand him and need some input. These are
the deals I got:

Presler D 940
This one is proven o'cer. It does 4GHz easy, and 4mb cache.
Price: $110 USD

Core 2 Duo e6400
2.12GHz @ stock, 2mb cache. Pretty sure it can do 2.8GHz.
Price: $205 USD

The C2D is practically double the price. Hence why it's hard decision to make.

Is the potential performance gain worth the extra $100?

EDIT: The C2D is an ES.

C2d can easily hit >3ghz with stock cooling. It smashes any PD processor by a fine margin at stock speeds too. It's worth the extra 100$

yeah my conroe is running well over 3ghz on a stock cooler...

Actually Destro that's a easy decision. The CD2 will be a bit quicker at stock speeds in nearly everything, and run a crap load cooler.

Do even a mild overclock of the C2D to 3gig and that Pentium D won't be able to get remotely near it even at its maximum overclock. The C2D @ 3.5 gig and that Pentium D will be crying for its mommy,

please people do a google search, c2d owns everythign, so many of these threads about pentium D s

if intel made a sub 50 buck pentium D i'd buy it :)

i live in a small apartment, and I do not pay for electricity.... a P-D would SERIOUSLY make this place more bearable in the wintertime for me (stupid landlords are so damn cheap with the heat).

seriously, for that reason, I'd buy one... I used to have a prescott that I used to heat up my bedroom, and a P-D would do an even better job at it....

where is the E6400 selling for $205? I want one at that price.

Haha...I have a P-D 805 running at 3.4Ghz and it keeps my room nice and warm :).

He said its an ES. Is it a gold ES?

Depends on the ES. If it's a earlier revision, good luck. For example, I have a 945G motherboard that is an earlier revision. It says there are no PCIe drivers so I can't install graphics drivers on it, and my P4 630 at 3.0Ghz runs like a P3. that, and my RAM couldn't run stock 667 on that board either, lol. Now transfer all of that to CPU, and there you go. Early revision ES. but the E6300, if it's good, will be an awesome cost.

I hear ya, hehehe.

Reminds me when I had a dual Athlon modded m-XP 2500 setup. I think
I had the vcore at 1.625v for each chip. That rig put Chernobyl to shame.

Yes the chip is an ES -engineer sample. But sadly it appears to be an
early revision according the stepping. Might get lucky though, one can
always hope :)

My bad on the price. It's not $205 but $215. Getting it from a member at
another message board.

dunt know about PD 8xx series but my 65nm PD 945 idles at 27C and never exceeds 40C under any conditions with a budget AVC fan, here is a screenshot:

Its only $217 at the egg, for a retail version, hehe.

On the contrary for me. I'm at 55C idle and 66C full load, and I'm running a scythe ninja, but I think the fact that I'm using shitty thermal compound might actually have something to do with my high temps, and I've got a PD950ES at 1.35V, 4.00Ghz. But I got the CPU for 70 bucks ;)

Unless you did a terrible job applying the paste or have paste with absolutely no thermal transfer capability, something isn't right if you're at 55C idle with 1.35V.

Thank you for taking the time in repeating what I just stated before. The white shit they call thermal paste is what I'm using right now, which is why I'm probably going to reseat and re-apply with AS5, and I think it's about time for a lapping job to be done on that 950 :D

Go for the 6400

I have a 6400 running at 3ghz (376 fsb).

Using nero recode I can do > 100fps on the first pas and 30fps on the second converting DVD's to Cinema AVC @ 1.5-2MB. My x2 3800 at stock speeds would only hit 40fps on the first and 8-16fps on the second pass.

Lol...I guess my point was even the white crap should give you a better temp than 55C I would think.
