Prepair for the Future! {Fallout 3]

I have to say that Bethesda's doing a damn good job at marketing this game and building hype. Prepare for the Future isn't really the coolest promotional thing I've ever seen for a game, but it's pretty damn impressive. So, now that that's out of the way...

If ya try keeping up with a game, maybe you wouldn't be so pessimistic about it. ;)
Amusingly, keeping up with the game has only made me more pessimistic. Especially after having watched those gameplay videos a few weeks ago...yikes.

One more thing I would like to know though, why would you put 80 hours into a game that you dislike so much? Could it be that subconsciously you really did like the game, it just took 80 hours for you to consciously tell your subconscious you didn't.
You're trying a bit too hard here :)

incase nobody knows www.planetfallout.com is now up and running too. Go there and check out some of the previews and info if you haven't already!
And reserve your pre-order! Buy the super-duper plastic clockwhatever! Send Todd Howard your money!

So it took you the greater part of two full work weeks to finally realize you had a problem with the game?
That was just sort of the deal with Oblivion. It seems like a solid little RPG until you're far along enough to discover the true nature of the absolutely disastrous leveling system. When you finally make that discovery -- whether it's at 30 hours or 80 -- you realize that progressing through the game any further is entirely pointless, and you come to the realization that you just played nothing more than elaborate hack-and-slash with a wacky quasi-RPG facade.

Oblivion is best described as a "ruse". People don't like ruses, generally, especially when they have to pay for it!

And, please, for the love of Christ, read this, will you?

You know Phide im really starting to think you never liked Oblivion at all!

As far as I can see, Phide is being a true cynic & wants nothing less than dissonance to break people's interest in something he blatantly despises. Looks like complete trolling to me.

I liked it when I first started playing it, actually. I liked the combat; the sound and visuals were great, and I especially liked all the iconography they created for the menus and whatnot (just plain fantastic -- I actually need to get in touch with the chick that did all that and hit her up for a couple projects). For the first five to ten hours, I actually really had a good time playing it. I knew there were some issues going in, and I bought two copies of the Collector's Edition despite that, but those shortcomings ended up being pretty major, game-breaking things for me. The satisfaction level went from Very Satisfied to Totally Unsatisfied pretty quickly.

So, no, I went into Oblivion enjoying it and came out hating it.

What? I really don't care what you guys play or what you don't play. Do what makes you happy. Go nuts. I'm don't have any real agenda other than to express my views on various things said in the thread so far. That's kind of the whole point of a discussion forum, really.

Now, if I were trolling, I'd be in on page one saying meaningless shit like "this site sucks and Bethesda sucks blah blah blah" without actually having any meaningful input. Didn't you notice that I said I liked the site and all the marketing and whatnot, that they were doing a great job on all of that?

Yeah, but the nice thing about Oblivion was that they provided you ALL the tools you needed to fix this "ruse". The even better thing is that other people fixed it and you just needed to spend a few minutes downloading one of the many available mods that fixed it all for you.

ITS BLOCKED!!!! NOOOOOOOOOO ::CRY:: Damn company not letting me see cool stuff. HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSE TO BE PRODUCTIVE IF I CAN"T WATCH MY PREVIEWS AHHHHHH!!!!!

Just seemed that way with how your words were placed. Now I can see that you're quite unhappy with Bethesda for what you feel Oblivion to be a travesty. I can respect that but I hope you'll hold your judgment for Fallout 3. I'm going to do so & hope for the best from the game.

I think we should all reserve our judgment until the game releases and we actually get some time to sit down with it and play through it.

True, but I still thought it was pretty disappointing. It's pretty evident that the emphasis with Oblivion was on making it pretty and approachable, without the same focus on depth of role playing or scale as the previous games. It seems fairly clear to me that the same overall approach is being used on FO3.

I suppose if I had waited and not even bothered with vanilla Oblivion, I might have a different opinion and have had a different level of satisfaction of the game, but I suppose I got a bit "tainted" playing the game Bethesda delivered.

A lot of Fallout series fans definitely aren't doing that though...
I think that's primarily because of Oblivion. I mean, if you put yourself in the shoes of someone who loved the original Fallouts and hated Oblivion (or even if you were just "meh" about Oblivion), wouldn't you feel the same way? You wouldn't bank on Bethesda putting out a worthy Fallout sequel if you detested (okay, strong word) what they've done with other sequels. If you go from buying Hondas to instead buying Kias and determine that Kias are garbage, you're not realistically going to keep throwing money at Kia based on the assumption that things have changed, are you?

From my perspective, Oblivion really soured the Elder Scrolls brand, and I naturally expect FO3 to sour the Fallout brand. I'm not pissed off about that, really, just disappointed, the same way you'd be disappointed -- not angry -- that a child would lie to you about something totally meaningless. And, hey, I could go on and on about the "hows" and "whys" of my mentality here, but it's all fairly boring and pointless, so I'll just skip it :)

Yeah, nothing like paying full price for a game, only to realize you have to wait for the mod community to make it playable.

I like what I've seen of Fallout 3 so far, but I will be waiting until the modders have had a chance to do their thing with it, before I buy.

I'm a hardcore Fallout fan. Still have the original 2 plus the twin pack that came out not too long ago. I'll be getting installment #3 when it first hits the shelves, as I've been waiting anxiously since the news about FO3 being made first came out.

I've never played Morrowind or Oblivion, and never had the desire to. That said, I have no fears of FO3 being just another cookie-cutter fantasy RTS/RPG/FPS. It seems to me BGS has kept numerous features of the first two games to incorporated into part 3, such as selective targeting, skills and traits, inventory items like Mentats and Rad-a-way, etc. This, imo, is pure awesome on Bethesda's part and truly caters to old fans and is sure to hook newcomers.

phide - I can relate when you stated you got into a game liking it, but came out hating it. I feel the exact same way about Ultima 9. As a long time Ultima fan (been playing them since the mid 80's when we got a Commodore 128), I was sincerely disappointed that EA would force Origin to release what felt like such a bug-ridden beta-stage game on the world. Garriott had no choice, as EA was calling all the shots since they wrote the paychecks. I tried and tried to enjoy U9, but constant crashing to the desktop after anywhere from 3 to 90 minutes (and losing any and all progress!) was pure torment. Damn you, damn you EA.

I’d have to agree with you on the fact that Bethesda has managed to dumb down the Elder Scrolls series from generation to generation (though I still love Oblivion). I also think you have a valid concern in that you may not like Fo3 because it too closely resembles Oblivion. I can understand that point of view. I doubt the gameplay and mechanics are going to be that dissimilar. However, I just can’t get on board with the idea that they’ve somehow ruined or soured the Fallout series by creating this sequel. That’s a pretty silly assessment considering the game hasn’t come out yet. I mean, did anyone really expect a ‘true to the original’ sequel after Interplay sold the IP to a completely different company? Shit, imagine if Piranha Bytes or Reality Pump had somehow managed to get their hands on the Fallout IP. We’d be lucky to have a game that ran at all.

Honestly I’m just glad to have a new game in the series. Bethesda has given us the opportunity to re-experience the Fallout world through their game engine and their story telling method. And, while that experience may ultimately turn out to be what amounts to a “Total Conversion Mod” for Oblivion, I’m still stoked at the idea of getting to revisit one of my all time favorite gaming environments, regardless of how Bethesda presents it. I think some folks are just clutching too closely to their memories of the original games. If you want that kind of gaming experience then go play Fallout 1 or 2. In the mean time, I’ll be enjoying Bethesda’s new take on the series.

Well said.

I've been trying to get the same point across to these people, Bethesda is a good company. We should be glad that they own the rights to Fallout, I feel that it is in good hands. Artificiary does make a good point though, Bethesda is one of the few only companies I would trust with the Fallout brand, good god it would be horrible to see Piranha bites or EA would do to the game if they got ahold of it, that would be a travesty.

If 80 hours = $50, then its 1.6 hours per $1, thats much better millage than a lot of other forms of entertainment out there.
Well worth the money, if you feel like crap after wards, then maybe you shouldn't be playing games at all :p

Im curious about some, but then i realize, that there are other better forms of entertainment like oh say...... sex? ( price depends on gf )
But no, if i spend 80 hours playing a game... even 40, then i thinks thats a great deal.

unfortunately there are only so many 40 hours in a work week..... *sign*
We shall see how Fallout plays out, but i will wait for a year or so, till some mods come out. I agree with what others have said. *yikes!* after seeing the videos.

Yeah, nothing like paying full price for a game, only to realize you have to wait for the mod community to make it playable.

Funny, I played Oblivion for months with out a single mod.
Yeah, the UI sucked... but guess game's UI was worse? Fallout 1/2! :p

fallout 3 is suppose to be 100 hrs of gameplay
"Hundreds of hours" to do everything in the game. About 15 - 20 for the main quest alone.

Yeah, nothing like paying full price for a game, only to realize you have to wait for the mod community to make it playable.

Have to call BS on this. Oblivion was 100% playable and fun for hundreds of thousands of people. You know perfectly well we were not discussing playability, we were discussing whether the game was what the devs said it would be, and what the players wanted it to be.

For the people who happened to want something else from their game, something other than what the developers provided, the developers gave them WAY more than the minimum necessary tools to make the game into whatever they wanted, and because a fair number of people wanted these other things you didn't even have to make the changes yourself.

Seriously, make a list of all the RPG games made to date that give you the ability to modify basically anything in the game you want, to the point that you can create an entirely new game if you wanted to. I guarantee it will be a VERY short list, and Bethesda games will show up way more than any other developers.

I think people just interpret things wrong. Often times people only hear what they want to hear.

Bethesda developers flat out lied about several aspects of Oblivion. That's a fact.
Defend it all you want, but the game was a massive disappointment for many.

Your mad about developers lying to you about a game? Dude you get lied to everyday by the media and government officials and by people that you talk to on a daily basis. If anything you should be more concerned about real world happenings.

But if you want to talk video games I can think of a LONG laundry list of developers who lied or stretched the truth about there games.

Seriously though, lets put things into perspective.

I don't know about Fallout 3. I mean, I hated Oblivion due to the uncanny way they have character talk to you...straight up in your face and emotionless. From the trailers, it seems that they have kept that aspect from Oblivion :(. They should have took a page from Bioware and copied Mass Effect dialog system. Although restricted, it was much more fluid and natural. My only concern is that they made Oblivion with guns....

My prediction:

Hardcore Fallout1/2 fans will absolutely hate the game, with good reason. Unfaithful to canon, lost feel, ruined franchise, etc.

People who never played Fallout 1/2 will love the game. This is their first true, post-apocalypse game.

I absolutely disagree. I am one of the most devoted Fallout fans of ALL TIME, ive played the first 2 probably 20+ times a piece in the last 10 years. The fact is they were made 10 year ago with the SR set at 640x480. This being said, I think it getting an update for good reason. The MOST important thing to me is for bethesda to keep the dark humor and classic feel of the game. The plot and setting were the MOST important things in FO 1&2, even more important than the turn based actions. I watched the game play previews and the language was absolute vulgarity, YES!!!! and the level of violence and gore is so over the top it was hilarious. That is what I want to see in Fallout 3, more than just the combat, but the plot and setting that made Fallout 1&2 my favorite games of all time

Well, if it helps at all, I enjoyed your comment and found it funny. :)

I never played Fallout but after watching that video and the feel I get it seems similar to Bioshock... or is it the other way around?

Go out and buy the first two and actually play them dumbass

But it wasn't. RPG Codex has plenty of examples.

WTF? I just said that we were discussing that issue, NOT that I thought the game was what the dev's said it would be. In addition, if you go back and read my prior post, the one I was responding to a response to, you would see that I stated that if you felt that the dev's had lied to you then at least you had the option to try and fix it with the additional tools you were given with the game. I said no more and no less than that. I did not ever judge the accuracy of anyone's statements.

To quote a disturbingly accurate man: "I think people just interpret things wrong. Often times people only hear what they want to hear."

Clearly you heard from me only what you wanted to hear.

Also, I checked out that RPGcodex list. The fourth post adequately explains how the majority of those "lies" were not in fact lies.... And it does so without even addressing the biggest reason why a "lie" is often not really a lie.... Because the developers said it many months before the game came out and the feature was cut because it would take too long to implement, or because it turned out to be a bad idea once game play testing took place.

Take a chill pill. I do not accept your premise that mods make up for the game and developer's short comings.

The fourth post of the RPG codex thread explains it all ? It's well over 10 pages long, read the whole thing and get back to me.

In summary, Pete Hines and most of Bethesda's promises are worthless.
I don't even believe 100% a mod tool will come out for FO3.

Honestly read the list of "lies," nearly all of them are just marketing exaggeration, and few are really anything of substance. Its more like the devs said the game would be great because of freedom, quests, and choices, and people say the devs lie because those aspects weren't to their tastes. Oblivion may have been a game for the masses but it did sell 5 million copies. Have no doubt that Fallout 3 will also be a game that appeals to the masses, but that does not mean the devs are lying about the content of the game. Are they exaggerating and marketing the game? Sure, but that does not mean you can just discount the facts they give you about the game on their face. I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of the advertising will be technically true, but the gameplay will definately not peae every single gamer.

I played FO 1, 2 and Tactics (thought it was shit compared to the first 2), and i liked Oblivion. But i DO NOT want them to mix the 2. I would have LOVED if they kept the Top Down camera and only zoomed in when you talked to someone, or once in a while when Bloody Mess kicked in (i love that perk) (for those who dont know what bloody mess is look here http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Bloody_Mess). But never the less, im still VERY eager to play FO3

I don't even believe 100% a mod tool will come out for FO3.

It won't. Why? They don't have enough time to waste on mod tools.

Pete Hines said:
Folk probably took for granted that every time we make a game, there’s a mod tool. We explained to folk that it takes a lot of time and effort to get that tool ready for release, and it’s not on our schedule right now. We need to get the game done and out. It’s not to say we won’t do it. It’s that right now we have an enormous amount of work to do, for three platforms and all these different languages to get it out around the wall.

Actually its quite the opposite , the Construction set is created to make time. Think of this if you will: All the things that Bethesda may have left out of the game that they weren't sure they would be able to put in the game due to time constraints will most definitely be accounted for by use of the construction set, think of it as a time capsule. When they are ready they will release it. That's how it should be , Us the consumer shouldn't dictate when a company releases a certain product. Like the old "Blizzard" adage "It'll be done when its done". Pete Hines has said time and time again that a constuction set will be availible just not at launch, Bethesda is more concerned about getting out of the gate cleanly and making sure F3 is finalized before they start on any more projects.

I think you all need to stop reading this information from third party sources, they like to put a spin on things to get hits , and who knows, its purple monkey dishwasher by the time you read it.

Or.... stay with me here.... you disregard every negative piece of information about the game as fud, lies and heresy and embrace the philosophy that this game is the second coming of <insert good thing here> and therefore can not and is not faulty in any way possible or imaginary.

No I just deal in factual information. Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

Good lord, F3 sure does spark a wild fire in the forums!

You guys need to take a chill pill - the game will be out soon enough. Than feel free to bash it to your hearts content! Until than, all we're accomplishing is having a pissing match for no reason.

But even still; I'd like to point out that any argument saying F3 is not canon is unequivocally false. Bethesda bought the rights to the Fallout IP, and in turn bought the rights to the story and all that goes in it. What they say and create is now canon - not Interplay.

Hell, part of the agreement in the sale is that the Fallout MMO Interplay is making could be cancelled if Bethesda doesn't like how it's turning out. Bethesda is now the controlling party of the IP, and thus decides what is canon and what is not.
