Todd Howard....has promised
Amusingly, keeping up with the game has only made me more pessimistic. Especially after having watched those gameplay videos a few weeks ago...yikes.If ya try keeping up with a game, maybe you wouldn't be so pessimistic about it.![]()
You're trying a bit too hard hereOne more thing I would like to know though, why would you put 80 hours into a game that you dislike so much? Could it be that subconsciously you really did like the game, it just took 80 hours for you to consciously tell your subconscious you didn't.
And reserve your pre-order! Buy the super-duper plastic clockwhatever! Send Todd Howard your money!incase nobody knows www.planetfallout.com is now up and running too. Go there and check out some of the previews and info if you haven't already!
That was just sort of the deal with Oblivion. It seems like a solid little RPG until you're far along enough to discover the true nature of the absolutely disastrous leveling system. When you finally make that discovery -- whether it's at 30 hours or 80 -- you realize that progressing through the game any further is entirely pointless, and you come to the realization that you just played nothing more than elaborate hack-and-slash with a wacky quasi-RPG facade. So it took you the greater part of two full work weeks to finally realize you had a problem with the game?
I liked it when I first started playing it, actually. I liked the combat; the sound and visuals were great, and I especially liked all the iconography they created for the menus and whatnot (just plain fantastic -- I actually need to get in touch with the chick that did all that and hit her up for a couple projects). For the first five to ten hours, I actually really had a good time playing it. I knew there were some issues going in, and I bought two copies of the Collector's Edition despite that, but those shortcomings ended up being pretty major, game-breaking things for me. The satisfaction level went from Very Satisfied to Totally Unsatisfied pretty quickly. You know Phide im really starting to think you never liked Oblivion at all!![]()
What? I really don't care what you guys play or what you don't play. Do what makes you happy. Go nuts. I'm don't have any real agenda other than to express my views on various things said in the thread so far. That's kind of the whole point of a discussion forum, really. As far as I can see, Phide is being a true cynic & wants nothing less than dissonance to break people's interest in something he blatantly despises. Looks like complete trolling to me.
Since its going to be multi platform. You can expect its going to have the same required specs for the PC version as games like Gears of War.

Oblivion is best described as a "ruse". People don't like ruses, generally, especially when they have to pay for it!

Now, if I were trolling, I'd be in on page one saying meaningless shit like "this site sucks and Bethesda sucks blah blah blah" without actually having any meaningful input. Didn't you notice that I said I liked the site and all the marketing and whatnot, that they were doing a great job on all of that?
Just seemed that way with how your words were placed. Now I can see that you're quite unhappy with Bethesda for what you feel Oblivion to be a travesty. I can respect that but I hope you'll hold your judgment for Fallout 3. I'm going to do so & hope for the best from the game.
True, but I still thought it was pretty disappointing. It's pretty evident that the emphasis with Oblivion was on making it pretty and approachable, without the same focus on depth of role playing or scale as the previous games. It seems fairly clear to me that the same overall approach is being used on FO3.Yeah, but the nice thing about Oblivion was that they provided you ALL the tools you needed to fix this "ruse". The even better thing is that other people fixed it and you just needed to spend a few minutes downloading one of the many available mods that fixed it all for you.
I think that's primarily because of Oblivion. I mean, if you put yourself in the shoes of someone who loved the original Fallouts and hated Oblivion (or even if you were just "meh" about Oblivion), wouldn't you feel the same way? You wouldn't bank on Bethesda putting out a worthy Fallout sequel if you detested (okay, strong word) what they've done with other sequels. If you go from buying Hondas to instead buying Kias and determine that Kias are garbage, you're not realistically going to keep throwing money at Kia based on the assumption that things have changed, are you?A lot of Fallout series fans definitely aren't doing that though...

From my perspective, Oblivion really soured the Elder Scrolls brand, and I naturally expect FO3 to sour the Fallout brand. I'm not pissed off about that, really, just disappointed, the same way you'd be disappointed -- not angry -- that a child would lie to you about something totally meaningless. And, hey, I could go on and on about the "hows" and "whys" of my mentality here, but it's all fairly boring and pointless, so I'll just skip it![]()
Id have to agree with you on the fact that Bethesda has managed to dumb down the Elder Scrolls series from generation to generation (though I still love Oblivion). I also think you have a valid concern in that you may not like Fo3 because it too closely resembles Oblivion. I can understand that point of view. I doubt the gameplay and mechanics are going to be that dissimilar. However, I just cant get on board with the idea that theyve somehow ruined or soured the Fallout series by creating this sequel.Thats a pretty silly assessment considering the game hasnt come out yet. I mean, did anyone really expect a true to the original sequel after Interplay sold the IP to a completely different company? Shit, imagine if Piranha Bytes or Reality Pump had somehow managed to get their hands on the Fallout IP. Wed be lucky to have a game that ran at all.
Honestly Im just glad to have a new game in the series. Bethesda has given us the opportunity to re-experience the Fallout world through their game engine and their story telling method. And, while that experience may ultimately turn out to be what amounts to a Total Conversion Mod for Oblivion, Im still stoked at the idea of getting to revisit one of my all time favorite gaming environments, regardless of how Bethesda presents it. I think some folks are just clutching too closely to their memories of the original games. If you want that kind of gaming experience then go play Fallout 1 or 2. In the mean time, Ill be enjoying Bethesdas new take on the series.
Yeah, nothing like paying full price for a game, only to realize you have to wait for the mod community to make it playable.
"Hundreds of hours" to do everything in the game. About 15 - 20 for the main quest alone.fallout 3 is suppose to be 100 hrs of gameplay

we were discussing whether the game was what the devs said it would be
But it wasn't. RPG Codex has plenty of examples.
I think people just interpret things wrong. Often times people only hear what they want to hear.
Bethesda developers flat out lied about several aspects of Oblivion. That's a fact.
Defend it all you want, but the game was a massive disappointment for many.
My prediction:
Hardcore Fallout1/2 fans will absolutely hate the game, with good reason. Unfaithful to canon, lost feel, ruined franchise, etc.
People who never played Fallout 1/2 will love the game. This is their first true, post-apocalypse game.
Well, if it helps at all, I enjoyed your comment and found it funny.
I never played Fallout but after watching that video and the feel I get it seems similar to Bioshock... or is it the other way around?
But if you want to talk video games

I don't even believe 100% a mod tool will come out for FO3.
Pete Hines said:Folk probably took for granted that every time we make a game, there’s a mod tool. We explained to folk that it takes a lot of time and effort to get that tool ready for release, and it’s not on our schedule right now. We need to get the game done and out. It’s not to say we won’t do it. It’s that right now we have an enormous amount of work to do, for three platforms and all these different languages to get it out around the wall.
It won't. Why? They don't have enough time to waste on mod tools.

Oh, Pete Hines said it? Why, then it must be true! Pete Hines, guys! Pete Hines!Pete Hines has said time and time again that a constuction set will be availible just not at launch
Or.... stay with me here.... you disregard every negative piece of information about the game as fud, lies and heresy and embrace the philosophy that this game is the second coming of <insert good thing here> and therefore can not and is not faulty in any way possible or imaginary.
Oh, Pete Hines said it? Why, then it must be true! Pete Hines, guys! Pete Hines!
