Ever since I built my comp My father has been annoyed over how much power my PSU sucks up (electricity bills of course). Can I enable power saving in windows, will this help? or does the PSU always suck up 530w? Thanks.

Tell your father you need a nice LCD monitor to put out a lot less power :).

The only thing I can think of is something like Cool and Quiet using less power when you're not using your computer for gaming or whatever.

I don't think your PSU is constantly putting out 530W. I think that's just the peak output or something like that.

as ive heard a computer is more power efficient then a blow dryer. its not the computer thats making the bills go high. i have quite a bunch of stuff in my computer. its on all day and our bills arent high. something else has gotta be the cause of that

I do have an LCD. SO your saying that it shouldn't be taking up that much power?, maybe it's something else.

Poor people or people who build high quality computers such as (everyone on this forum) should not worry about power saving.

If you cant afford your power bill, then maybe you should sell me your computer so you can pay your damn bills

im sure his parents can afford it. the fact that they are paying extra is probably not working out.

a computer with a 19inch monitor and a 300watt PS left on 24 hours a day and 30 days a week cost $2.12, your dad is smoking good weed man hehe
Dryers cost the most out of a house and hot water heaters.
go to your local power company site and you can show him for yourself or call them :)

i think parents say that just to get their kids off the computer lol. my parents told me that tons of times but i knew it didnt cost that much.

Modern pc power supplies are switching power supplies, they only take as much power as the components in your computer needs to run (in addition conversion inefficiencies). If the system in your sig is what you are talking about, I can tell you that you are not drawing 520W.

There is some power stuff you can do, such as setting your monitor to turn off after in-activity as well as hard disk spin down etc.

You could also try what I did when my parents gave me trouble about power usage. Get your hands on an ammeter (I prefer the clamp style, but they do make plug-in versions) and figure out your exact power draw, When you know the amperage your computer pulls you can easily calculate the monthly cost and pay your parents for it.
