Powering a PC Farm

Would each machine in a PC farm have it's own PSU which would then be connected to it's own UPS or would they all run off a single PSU attached to a UPS or how does it work?

I'm curious as to what you are tying to put together. I saw you're other thread about what CPU's to use. I gotta ask, if you are asking such basic questions like that, are you really ready for putting together a project like this? I just am curious because I thought it would be obvious to get the best quad-core processor's you could afford.

Anyway, all PC's should have their own PSU's. As for how many PC's will work on a single PSU, that is all up to the rating and capacity information of that specific PSU.

stop fooling around. everybody knows that you dont grow pc's on a farm. they run in herds and you get them from a ranch.

There are multiple ways to go about it.

- AC-DC PSU with each system.
- Central AC converter -> 48VDC or other voltage -> DC-DC converter per system.

The former has been the most popular for a while now, the latter is becoming more and more popular in data centres, as it's more efficient and easier to integrate with backup power (UPSs, generators).

I'd considered doing the latter a long time ago, but I don't have nearly enough computers. It's definitely an option if you have enough though.

How many is 'enough'? The idea is to have a series of 6 machines on i7's. What kind of farm would justify the "Central AC converter -> 48VDC or other voltage -> DC-DC converter per system." setup?

In theory 2+ systems would be enough to justify the efficiency savings, though it would depend on the exact solution chosen. I must admit to not having exact or even ballpark numbers on the costs involved, especially with regard to the AC converter. The AC converter would be a switching mode PSU (SMPS), outputting the selected voltage (a transformer coil for a few kW would be huge and would need excessive cooling, plus be awfully inefficient). ATX-compatible DC-DC PSUs are available from a ~100 Watt as used in Mini-ITX systems, to the type one would see in servers. Google may provide you with some places which sell them.
