i see many posts, and what most people recommend are 450-520 watt corsairs..

what kind of system will need a 700+ watt psu then?
 
A quad core CPU with a large overclock. Dual optical drives. A four disk RAID5 setup, with two 500GB USB drives for backup/data files. SLI'd 8800GTX (or if you are an AMD fan, CF'd 2900s.)

A system like that would probably need a 700W+ PSU. The 2900s were horribly inefficient, and take a lot of amps on the 12V rail. I'm guessing that if you have to ask if you need one, you don't. (kinda like if you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it.)
 
It's an excellent power supply.

However, I would spend the extra $10 for this PSU instead:
Corsair 650TX 650W PSU - $120

The 650TX offers 3 more amps on the +12V rail and is rated at a higher temperature. It's also quieter and has two more SATA ports just in case you need 8 hard drives.
 
yes, the PC P&C 610 SLI is a quality power supply - and for half price, that is a real good deal. you can go a long ways on 610W, and the PC P&C power supplies are quite efficient, so no worries - if you read the fine print, this PSU also comes with a 5-year warranty
 
If you don't have all that, why you are looking at PSUs above 550W? You can get a quality 450-550W PSU for ~$80 shipped easy. If thats all you need, why get more? I don't know your budget or system specs, so I wouldn't say which PSU you should get, I'm just trying to understand why you are looking at a 610W PSU if "what most people recommend are 450-520 watt corsairs.."

For ~$100, either PSU would be fine, I just don't see why the $65-$80 450W-550W PSUs are worse.
 
I currently have a 450 psu from Asus .. that served my amd x2 up to now just fine... now i am building a new system ... i feel more comfortable getting that pc&c psu for $109 610W .. it might be overkill, but my head will rest and will be alright for a good time to come without worrying about psu's
 
First, I'm not trying to talk you out of it. Let me state right off the bat that the 610 PCP&C is a fine PSU.

If you are building a new PC, you are starting over from scratch. My head would rest just as well with a 550W Corsair/seasonic for ~$80 as it would with the PCP&C. That extra $30 could go into something else, making my eyeballs happier while playing video games. Either one has plenty of juice. I do admit that you need a good PSU, and $30 might be worth it to get the extra 60W.

Spec out your system. If you need to shave a few bucks from the build inorder to get the good CPU/GPU, then take a look at a slightly smaller PSU.

E3110 or E8400 , dunno yet probably the cheapest at time of purchase
TRUE 120 or Tuniq tower (dunno yet)
DFI DK P35 or eVGA 750i FTW (still debating)
2x2 Gig of Gskil pc8000
eVGA 9600 GT
1x WD 640 AAKS hdd
1x sata dvd-rom
1x floppy

all in the coolermaster 690 case, and ill get some more 120mm fans for more airflow in the case

I am also planning on OC'ing,both CPU and GPU ... from all of that, i currently already have the 9600gt

who knows, later on maybe i go with another hdd? a blueray hd dvd burner? and if i go with the 750i FTW , maybe get a 2nd 9600gt.

thats basically it.. I wanted the 610watt pc&c for later on who knows...
