I have about 10 IDE drives that are all 120-250gigs. These are just extras from upgrading the drives in my main box over the years to bigger, faster drives. I’m looking to build a computer just dedicated as a fileserver for all those drives.

I have an old Intel 810 board with a Pentium3 700 so the system itself shouldn’t use much power, but I need to find a powersupply that will support all of the drives.

It just seems like most of the powersupplies that would support that number of drives also are built with the 2nd rail powering the PCI-E Video or CPU where it would go completely to waste in this system.

Are their any powersupplies that forgo the PCI-E power connectors, etc in favor of extra hard drive power connectors, etc?

Hard drives really do not use much power, you can use pretty much any decent PSU with a bunch of connectors, then just chain molex connectors/SATA power connectors with Y cables and adapters for the remaining connectors you need.

I bought a 500W rosewill psu from newegg for my fileserver. It has 8 SATA drives + IDE boot drive. I have had no problems with that (its the second line in my sig).

I would get something with a single 12 volt rail as opposed to multiple ones. I had a 750w Silverstone PSU and more than 13 drives would overload the PSU since all the drive connectors were on a single 12 volt rail (18 amps). Switched to a 610w PC P&C and that solved all my problems. Successfully running 22 drives off it as we speak.
